Michael Phelps' smoking :47.12 split helps the US pass France and win gold in the 4x100 free relay in a time of 3:09.92. An incredible time for the 31-year-old Phelps, who first started thinking about a comeback after watching the US lose this same race at world championships in Barcelona three years earlier.

The US men's win in the 4x100 freestyle relay is their first since 2008, while Michael Phelps wins his eighth gold in a relay -- the most by a male swimmer and ties him with Jenny Thompson for the most by a swimmer overall.
