Get to know Conor Dwyer.

CpTMSRdVIAA1B6C.jpg

Conor Dwyer is an emerging freestyle star for the United States and won a gold medal as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2012 London Olympics.
Dwyer started swimming at age 6 because he thought it would be fun, but he also played hockey, baseball, football, basketball and water polo.
Dwyer came away from the 2012 Olympics with a gold medal from the 4x200m freestyle relay. He also placed fifth in the 400m freestyle individually.

At the 2013 World Championships, Dwyer asserted himself on the world stage, winning a silver in the 200m freestyle and two relay medals (gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay).
At the 2015 World Championships, he earned a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay and individually, placed fifth in the 200m individual medley and ninth in the 200m freestyle.

In 2011, Dwyer made the world championship team and earned a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Dwyer won a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2012 Olympics and also placed fifth in the 400m freestyle.
With his final win at the Santa Clara stop of the Arena Pro Series, he locked up enough points to win a one-year lease of a BMW and a $10,000 bonus for the third year in a row.

Dwyer has three brothers and one sister, and an event bigger extended family – who frequently supports him in the stands at major competitions – that includes 15 aunts and uncles and 35 first cousins. Every year for Christmas, the family plays hockey at an ice rink they rent out.
Dwyer has trained all over during his pursuit of making the Olympic team: the Chicago native started out at Iowa before transferring to Florida, then trained in Maryland briefly before settling in California.

Americans Lilly King (1:05.70, 1st) and Katie Meili (106.52, 5th) both qualified for Monday night's final of the 100 breaststroke. Russia's Yulia Efimova (1:05.72) won her heat and had the second-fastest semi time but was booed by fans before and after her race. Efimova has twice been suspended for doling violations and was one of several Russian athletes reinstated to compete in Rio. Said King after prelims this morning: "It's unfortunate we have to deal with these things in the sport ... a level playing field would be preferred."

Leader van Vleuten suffers terrifying crash in final push.

cornering on a tight descent going 50km/hr? They make it look easy, it aint. It's crazy. She didn't gauge the corner well, too much speed ...then panicked and hit the brakes during the corner, a no no (tires are already under tremendous stress, breaking can put them over the edge, lose it). They're saying condensation was on the roads-- may have played a role.

'She was diagnosed as having severe concussion and three small fractures in her lower back and was admitted to intensive care for 24 hours.'

Former Olympic individual pursuit champion Chris Boardman told the BBC the course was dangerous.
"I am past commenting - I am angry about it," he said.
"I went down and had a look at the course and saw those edges. We knew it was way past being technical; it was dangerous. The people who designed the course and said what safety features were needed had seen it as well and left it.
"We knew the descent was treacherous. I looked at that road furniture and thought, nobody can crash here and just get up. It is really bad and that is what we have seen today."

Another stunning upset in Olympic tennis tonight, as Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina) upset Novak Djokovic (Serbia) 7-6, 7-6 in the men's singles opener. Earlier in the day, the Williams sisters were knocked out in first-round doubles, a day after Venus lost in first-round singles.

Katie Ledecky wrote the latest chapter in her book of world dominance Sunday night, winning gold and breaking her own two-year-old world record in the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:56.46. After the race, teammate Leah Smith, who won bronze in a time of 4:01.92, hugged Ledecky on the lane line and said to her "Oh my God, 3:56!" Ledecky's gold is the first for the US in the pool so far in Rio.
