I have so much stuff like this sometimes hard to see the forest.

I just did a similar thing for last 5 years of college hoops (can send/attach if you want) but like you said, not really sure what you get out of it. Don't want to lose the forest in the trees.

Only thing even somewhat promising was that (from Nov 8, 2005 to March 10, 2010) there were 2,214 games with a spread b/w 14 and 25, and the dogs covered 1,185 of them or 53.52%. So if you'd bet $110 to win $100 on every dog b/w +14 and +25 in the last 5 years you would be up $5,310.

going from memory one year maybe 2007 may have scewed the results a bit, I could be wrong, but recall one year we had 15 as a magic number

I just sent you back an e-mail. More to come, but I'm running off to class.

Just a quick glance at my NCAAB line db, I see 33 games in '07 with a spread of exactly 15, and the favorites covered 18 of them. This what you were referring to?

Pops-

Thanks for answering my question on page 5. I've developed another if you don't mind answering. I'm VERY familiar with Excel and have had the opportunity to explore your sheet over the last 24 hours. I'm seeing things clearly with it (cough...like trying to find games where the humidity is less than 24% in April and May, even though I realize this is only the tip of the iceberg on any given game...cough).

My question is this: if the intent is to scalp/middle, are you also trying to set a "fair" opening line whether o/u or ML? In reference to the above example, sure you'd take a good look at 'over 7' runs, but would you also take a look at 'over 12' runs? Does the ultimate wager decision hinge on the particular game's appearance 'on paper' to go over such number?

no i dont set lines like some do. no my lines. the line is the line period. i use the pitching data worksheet as my guide and than add in the external factors, weather, indoors out doors and umps to determine it it shades to the over or under

MNNAT, hope you stick around. There will be some good info in this thread, no doubt.

I've got an excel query with you. I have columns for "Home Score", "Away Score", "Home Spread", "Visitor Spread" (redundant I know), among others but those are the relevant ones. What would the logic be if I was trying to use this info to create a column that indicates whether "Dog" or "Fave" covered. It's easy in baseball because if the team with a lower moneyline won, then the dog won. I'm having trouble getting the if/and logic to work out. Thanks. If you're interested in seeing the database for yourself in return for help with the if statements, just shoot me a PM.

It's easy in baseball because if the team with a lower moneyline won, then the dog won. I'm having trouble getting the if/and logic to work out. Thanks. If you're interested in seeing the database for yourself in return for help with the if statements, just shoot me a PM.

Thanks for the kind wishes, IrishTim. I'll certainly be around.

As for your question, I'll see if I understand your dilemna. Assuming the 4 columns you mention, the 5th column could be set up with the "IF" function in Excel. Let's try an example, and we'll simple it down:

Cell A1 = 5 (fav score)
Cell A2 = 4 (dog score)
Cell A3 = -150 (fav ML)
Cell A4 = 135 (dog ML)
Cell A5 = "=IF(A1>A2, "fav","dog") -it's basically reasoning out "if A1 is greater than cell A2, then the fav won/covered, if not, the dog won/covered."

If I've horribly simplified your request, we'll clear it up tomorrow.

MNAT, that how I did it for the bases db which only deals with MLs. But if I have something like:

H score.........V score.........H-spreadD.........V-spread
88................ 83................ -9............... 9
92................ 95................ 2.5................ -2.5
101................ 96................ -3 ................ 3

I want to create a separate column now for "Dog" and "Fave". No rush, I'll be out of town for a couple days.

Pops, for some reason my e-mail to you keeps getting sent back. I was using a different database that wasn't nearly as extensive as yours. The strongest correlation was b/w certain umps and the line moves (for totals), but you already knew that.

The reason I don't think I found anything was because all of this info is already available so there's really no reason for it to cause a line move. But now that I have your master handy, there is a lot more stuff for me to work with. I'm out of town from tomorrow until Monday, but I'll get my hands dirty starting monday night.

pops, any chance you have 2008's full master, which games could be added to the current master. Intent, obviously, is to just have a little bit larger sample size to draw from. On the flip side, I understand how much teams change, situations change, etc., but some of these cats/pivots would benefit from multiple years of sample size. How about a PDWS with 2008's games? Will that bring the current master sheet to its knees? lol

There are other years available but data is not necessarily in the same columns. You would have to organize it by col. A big task because of the size.
