College football is different with the ranking system. Margin of victory is huge. This does not happen in the pros.

Yes the Rajun Cajuns are running up the score to get a higher ranking :):)

Maybe the situation just doesnt come up that often in NFL as it did in the Saints game.
It wasnt that it was fourth down with 27 seconds left but it was at the other teams goal line.
There was nothing else the Saints could do but run a play. Kneeling would be LOL but kicking a FG would be more LOL

Chop is right, you don't want to risk a block FG returned for a TD or kick the FG and have the kickoff returned for a TD followed by the onside kick. Those are much more likely outcomes than a team scoring twice and having to go 98 yards in 27 seconds.

To be fair Iowa St. didn't call their final two timeouts with under a minute left and it looked like they were in fact trying to have that be the final score but the Ragin' Cajuns punched it in anyways.

Of course you go for it, Attempting a fg would be the dumbest way to go. One could kneel(not political) or and the best choice is to simply go for it.

If you kick the field goal best case scenario is you giving them the ball back down 14. U risk kick off return, or worst case scenario they block the fg. Obviously you just go for it, get the td, up 3 scores, or they stop you and GL, even scoring once from the 2.

One is letting their bets cloud logical thinking.

Extra point percentages in the NFL has always been over 95% before it was moved back. Going for it on fourth and two 61.5% success rate. If you're worried of a team scoring twice in 27 seconds take the much more sure score to put you up 2tds than a 61.5% chance of going up by three scores. Not that difficult to comprehend. And spare me the blocked field, because a fumble return or int return never happens, right?

I think just about every team in the NFL would have gone for it in that spot

Absolutely not. The majority wouldn't

He was also doing gadget plays downfield with the game in hand seconds earlier

Nothing against michael thomas, but his injury is exactly what Peyton deserves. It was bad coaching that put his star player at risk

Pretty sure the coach simply wanted to win. Wasn't betting on the under or playing fantasy sports.

how about having the bucs teased to +10.5? was there any mathematical reason for the bucs to go for 2 after that last score?

Simply put. Kicking a field goal extends the game. When you're leading you don't want to extend the game obviously.

Payton made the correct call for what he wanted to accomplish.

Incorrect. Belicheat kicked the field goal with a 1:12 on the clock at 4th and 1, which has a much higher probability to be successful at the Rams 24 in the Super Bowl!

Huh?? That FG gave the Pats a 10 pt. lead. Of course you're kicking the FG in that instance.

Yeah and a first down and it's game over!! 10 point lead with 1:12 left. If there's such a concern of scoring over 14 points with 27 seconds left as was the case in the Saints game, then using the logic in this thread, you must go for it at 4th and one. Greater than an 80% probability of getting it on a QB sneak. Game is 100% over. Plus no need to worry about the QB's health considering it's the Super Bowl and not week 1.

Literally completely different. Difference in field position, score, and game clock.

In the Pats situation, the downside of going and not getting it is giving the ball back to the Rams at the 24 in a one score game with over a minute left.
In the Saints situation the downside was giving the ball back at the 2 with 27 seconds left and needing two scores.
Totally apples and oranges.

Yes the percentages seem to point for the PAts going for it yet they still kicked the field goal. Again using this threads logic in which it seems plausible that TB can score twice in 27 seconds, than it stands to reason that it is much more plausible that the Rams could score twice in a 1:12. (needing only a td and fg. If NO kicks the field goal TB needs two tds) Bottom line is Pats kicked the field goal when there was much more time on the clock, much easier to make a first down and much harder to kick a field goal.
