Found out what we needed to about South Korea. They simply don't have the Defense to be here past their next matchup.
Unfortunately for them (
but very fortunately for bettors) that next matchup is against a desperate 1 point in Group E having
Spain team needing a squad to Tee Off on and flatten by as many goals as possible if Spain Women have any hope of advancing.
If Spain does handle South Korea they have a
chance of advancing with 4 points, if not within Group E itself then as one of the four 3rd place teams that will be let through. If they do not handle South Korea they are outta here.
In the 2014 Men's World Cup the Costa Rican Mens squad got a
LOT of positive attention for finishing 1st in their Group that consisted of three former World Cup champions: Uruguay, Italy, and England.
They then went on to defeat Greece 5-3 via a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in their history they were defeated by a very capable Netherlands squad only after a penalty shootout (3-4) following a tough fought scoreless draw by which time the eyes of the world were upon them and everyone on the planet who is not Dutch and/or in The Netherland or had wagers on The Dutch were rooting for them.
The unity, teamwork and
DESIRE, refusal to give up, to play as hard as possible to the final whistle and never entertain a thought of being out of a game suggests this Costa Rican Women's team might similarly endear themselves to the world and progress much more deeply into
this tournament then expected.
Fortunately for them (
and very fortunately for bettors) The Ticas next face a Brazilian Women's team to whom the game will mean absolutely nothing. Brazil has advanced.
Brazil will be resting players, we will likely see little or
nothing of their star Marta and very little of other key Brazil Women. A squad can simply not risk injury in a completely meaningless game.
With a Win against Brazil The Ticas would amass 5 points within the Group and their passage through to the next round would be assured.
South American Brazil's Central American neighbors Costa Rica advancing, rather than a Spanish Womens team that gave Brazil a hard match from which they prevailed by only one goal (or other teams on the bubble that are ranked higher than Costa Rica) might be a better outcome for Brazil so we might see The Ticas have a very very good day when they face Brazil on Wednesday June 17.
Whatever the case, this is a very bright day for Costa Rican Soccer. The success of the Men's squad last World Cup and the success thus far of this Costa Rican Womens team here suggests a very
future for Costa Rican Soccer.
