1974 Sea of Hands Catch

Clarence Davis' catch in a sea of hands ended one of the greatest NFL games of all-time, pitting the Oakland Raiders against the Miami Dolphins in the 1974 NFL Playoffs. With 4:54 to play, Kenny Stabler completed a 72 yard touchdown pass to Cliff Branch. Branch went to the ground to make the catch, but being untouched by Dolphin defenders, he popped upright and ran the remaining 27 yards to complete the play. With 4:37 to go, the score was Raiders 21, Dolphins 19. A mere two minutes later, Miami had responded with a touchdown that gave them the lead again by five. With two minutes left in the game, the Raiders had one last chance. Stabler drove the Raiders to the Miami 8-yard line with 35 seconds left. On 1st and goal, Stabler called a pass play, took the snap, and scrambled to his left. Miami defensive end Vern Den Herder tripped Stabler from behind, but Stabler got off a floating pass toward Davis in the end zone before going down. Davis, Miami defensive back Charlie Babb, and linebacker Mike Kolen all leaped for the ball at the same time and each got their hands on it. Davis, however, out-wrestled Babb and Kolen for the ball and the winning score. This 28-26 victory, with a combined three touchdowns scored by both teams in the final 4:37, made this Raiders comeback one of the most unforgettable in Dolphins-Raiders history.
The irony of the "Sea of Hands" catch lied in the nickname teammates had bestowed on Davis: "Hands of Wood". For his supposed inability to catch balls out of the backfield.

Game details

Going into the game, Bills coach Wade Phillips created a stir by starting quarterback Rob Johnson, rather than Doug Flutie, who had started 15 games, and who had led the team to the playoffs.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans opened up the scoring when Jevon Kearse sacked Buffalo quarterback Rob Johnson in the end zone for a safety. Johnson completed just 10 of 22 passes while being sacked six times including twice by Kearse. After the safety, Derrick Mason returned the free kick 42 yards to the Bills' 28-yard line. Five plays later, Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. After forcing a punt, the Titans drove 56 yards in 11 plays. Kicker Al Del Greco initially missed a 45-yard field goal attempt, but the Bills were penalized for defensive holding on the play, and Del Greco's second attempt was good from 40 yards on the last play of the half. At the end of the half, the Bills were trailing 12-0 and had managed to gain only 64 yards, while also losing 44 yards on nine penalties.
But in the second half, the Bills managed to rally back. On Buffalo's first play of the third quarter, Antowain Smith broke off a 44-yard run, sparking a 62-yard drive that ended with his 4-yard touchdown run four plays later. Later on, the Bills drove 65 yards, featuring a 37-yard completion from Johnson to Eric Moulds, with a roughing the passer penalty on Kearse adding another 15. Smith finished the drive with another 4-yard touchdown run, giving the Bills a 13-12 lead after receiver Kevin Williams dropped a pass from Johnson on the two-point conversion attempt.
Late in the fourth quarter, the stage was set for an exciting finish. Tennessee received the ball with 6:15 remaining. Titans receiver Isaac Byrd's 16-yard punt return and five carries from Eddie George for 17 yards set up a wobbly 36-yard field goal by Del Greco. The Titans took a 15-13 lead with 1:48 to go. On the ensuing drive, with no timeouts remaining, Bills quarterback Johnson led the Bills on a five-play, 37-yard drive to the Titans' 24 yard line. On the last two plays from scrimmage, Johnson played with only one shoe on, as he had lost one and had no time to put it back on, with the clock running out. With only 16 seconds remaining in the game, Steve Christie, the Bills' kicker, made a 41-yard field goal to put Buffalo in the lead, 16-15.
Moments later, Christie kicked off, and Titans player Lorenzo Neal received. Neal handed the ball off to Titans tight end Frank Wycheck, who then lateraled the ball across the field to another Titans player, Kevin Dyson, who then ran down the sidelines for a 75-yard touchdown.
The play was named Home Run Throwback by the Titans and was developed by Special Teams Coordinator Alan Lowry. The Titans ran the play regularly in practices during the regular season, though the practices usually involved Derrick Mason, who had been injured earlier in the game and was unavailable for the situation. Dyson, as one of the team's lead wide receivers, rarely practiced with the special teams unit and was largely unfamiliar with the layout of the play. Nevertheless, his execution of Lowry's vision was flawless.

I could write a book..Heres one...

College football..I am getting 3.5 but trail 20-10 with 10 seconds left..Well, I punch in a td with 4 seconds left, kick the pat and looks like a cover right?

On the ensuing KO my team tries an onside kick...ball bounces straight to some little jitter bug the opponent put on the good hands team..He catches it in stride and runs 65 yards for a total unnecessary TD..99 out of 100 the guy jumps on the ball and the game expires.

I'll do you one better. I had UCLA under 2nd half in a bowl game at the end of 2005. This half was going waaaaay under until there are 2 onside kicks that get returned for TDs.

too many to list. Had Milw against Az earlier last month. So many bad beats. Funny how I've had a bunch of these listed too.

In 1999 I had Arizona +7 (This is when the Snake played for the Cards) vs. Buffalo. Arizona is down 10 with about 2 mins left and the Snake drives them to a TD with about a min or so left.

Down by 3 they onsides it.

The fucking onsides was ran back by Buffalo.

Final Score 31-21.

My bad beat story happened a few months ago during the Euro Cup Soccer.

Now I NEVER bet on soccer because I don't know anything about it. But I just happened to be watching some soccer match while I was on-line making some bets and I noticed there was an "in-game soccer line" for the game I was watching live. The game had literally 5 minutes left and the score was 0-2. The line offered was -2500 for the team that was winning and the only way to lose was for the other team to score 2 or more goals in the next 5 minutes. Well, seeing as how they hadn't scored all game and nobody ever seems to score much in soccer anyway, I decided to go for it. For some stupid reason I put 1/3 of my bankroll on it.

You can guess what happened over the next 5 minutes.

:ohno:

I swear on my life, I'll never bet on another soccer game.

I remember that one. That was a Sunday night game. That was a tough loss for me too.

I took a unified gaming site for 30K playing online blackjack.
Years ago they offered a single deck that had positive EV.

When I went to cashout, they claimed I used a "bot" and
nullified my winnings.

But, the loss turned into a win when I appealed and they
sent the logs to unified gaming for analysis, and they
ruled in my favor.

I also think bad losses can be categorized by having much confidence in a team only to get totally destroyed.

Case in point, I had Texas +7 against Memphis in this year's tourney and Memphis absolutely killed Texas. I had $600 on Texas and I was very confident that they'd cover the game. What an idiot.

Got nipped at the wire in a greyhound race (1993) that was coming back for over $48,000 (the price was established and noone had a winning ticket). It looked impossible to lose coming for home.

Was coming back for 8K when Louis Wright blocked that San Diego kick and ran it back for a TD in OT in 1985. Had SD getting 4-1/2 in four $500 A&Rs (each of them good going into that game).

December 1985, I had Hawaii +14.5 against BYU in CFB. With 2:20 seconds left to play BYU took possesion of ball at their own 25 leading by 19-6. I thought I was a sure winner, BYU will run out clock. What happens next was unbelievable. BYU passes on every play. Completing passes of 15 yards, 25 yards, 20 yards, etc. After a couple of incomplete passes in the end zone BYU runs the ball for a 1st down to the Hawaii 9 yard line. Players are getting up from the pile and clock is running under 20 seconds. Game over right. Would you believe with 9 seconds left an Hawaii safety runs at the ref to take a timeout. Remember BYU has 1st and goal at the nine yard line, leading 19-6, clock ticking down to zero. Why would an Hawaii player take time? It was a mistake! Byu gets one more play, instead of QB taking a need, Robbie Bosco handed ball to Via Shikhema for a sweep right. After avoiding being tackled Via Shikhema dives and hits the pylon for a 9 yard touchdown run. Final score BYU 26, Hawaii 6. I was in college at the time, living off campus with 3 other roommates. I was so pissed to lose this way, I punched the wall and put a huge hole in it. One of the roommates was really pissed at me. I later found out why BYU was passing on every down with less than 2 minutes. Robbie Bosco was going after passing records and coach Lavell Edwards wanted his player to get the record.
