One last reference to Steele’s preseason magazine. He ranks the toughest schedules for every team in 2013 and 2014. It is interesting to note the differences in some cases. For instance last year Florida was ranked as having the #1 toughest schedule in 2013 and dropped to #32 toughest schedule in 2014. I will list some down below. In brackets the first # is their 2013 toughest schedule ranking and the second # is the 2014 toughest schedule ranking.
Miss State (#2 to #56), TCU (#4 to #40), Georgia (#5 to #35), Notre Dame (#17 to #1), Louisville (#115 to #68), Auburn (#32 to #5), Alabama (#38 to #68) and Texas (#28 to #10).
Toughest schedule is one of many variables when evaluating a team transcending from one season to the next but it worthy of attention. Of course you have to consider experience rankings of players, coaching tenures etc but usually a tougher schedule can make it more difficult to improve from the previous year’s record.
If you break down the 25 toughest schedules only 7 of the current AP top 25 teams rank in the top 25 of the toughest schedule rankings. That is pretty impressive. They are Notre Dame (#1 toughest schedule), W. Virginia #4, Utah #8, UCLA #11, USC #17, Ole Miss #20, and Ariz St #25. Marshall has the #125 toughest schedule out of 128 teams.
