Toronto is hitting .286 against southpaws this season and Scott Kazmir has been struggling for the Rays at home. Back the Blue Jays tonight against Tampa Bay.
If there is a team in the AL East Scott Kazmir hasn't had much luck against, it is the Toronto Blue Jays. The Rays are 0-5 in Kazmir's starts vs. Toronto at Tropicana Field. Since returning from his quad injury on June 27 he has yet to pitch more than five innings. He hasn't been going deep into games all season averaging a high 19.8 pitches per inning and leaving the Rays' pen to work four three or four innings in his starts.
Kazmir has been rocked at home this season with a 1-3 record and a 9.40 ERA. In 29.2 innings on the hill at Tropicana Field this year he has allowed 31 earned runs and 40 hits. Tonight he will face a Toronto team that is batting .286 vs. southpaws on the season.
With the All-Star break approaching the Blue Jays have managed to hang in the AL race despite a lot of injuries and they should close out the first half of the season feeling pretty good about things. Tonight they send Brain Tallet to face Tampa.
He has never started vs. the Rays but he has some solid relief performances under his belt. In 2008 he faced them six times in relief allowing just one hit, no earned runs, seven strikeouts and three walks. In 2007 he faced them four times allowing five hits, no earned runs, four strikeouts and three walks.
Tallet has done well overall since his switch from the pen to the starting rotation earlier this season. He had a rough April but his stamina showed major improvement by May and he has pitched deep in games with nine quality starts in 13 outings since May. In his last three starts against the Yankees, Phillies, and Reds he has given up just six earned runs and a 16/11 strike out/walk ratio.
He seems to do very well even when his control isn't on by not getting flustered when putting runners on base. He has pitched in a lot of tough stadiums on the highway this season and still has a decent 3.98 road ERA to show for it. The veteran lefty should do well tonight against the Devil Rays lineup.
We'll back Toronto tonight as a nice sized dog against the overpriced Scott Kazmir and the Rays.
