GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (49-57) at Chicago White Sox (41-62)

Preview: Blue Jays at White Sox

Gracenote

Aug 1, 2017

The Toronto Blue Jays were sellers at Monday's non-waiver trade deadline, dealing pitchers Francisco Liriano and Joe Smith for prospects, and the team responded with a big letdown on the field shortly afterward. The Blue Jays will try to bounce back from a crushing loss when they visit the Chicago White Sox for the middle contest of their three-game series on Tuesday.

Toronto has plenty of power in the lineup and slugged three homers on Monday in jumping out to a 6-0 lead, but the absence of Smith in the setup role proved to be a problem as Chicago rallied for a 7-6 win. The White Sox showed off the benefits of a complete rebuild when rookie Matt Davidson drove in the winning run for the second straight day, but they also received a big scare when top prospect Yoan Moncada had to be carted off the field. The Cuban second baseman collided with right fielder Willy Garcia and could not put any pressure on his leg, although X-rays were negative. The Blue Jays will try to jump out to an even bigger lead and keep it away from the bullpen behind starter Marcus Stroman, who opposes veteran Mike Pelfrey.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (9-5, 3.08 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Mike Pelfrey (3-8, 4.73)

Toronto's struggles this season are not the fault of Stroman, who has yielded three earned runs or fewer in 17 of his 21 starts. The Duke product is struggling with his control of late and walked five over 7 2/3 innings at Cleveland on July 22 before issuing six in only 4 2/3 frames against Oakland on Thursday. Stroman walked just one in seven innings against the White Sox on June 17 but still ended up with a loss after yielding three runs and six hits.

Pelfrey is winless in his last seven appearances - six starts - and is trying to work deeper into games after failing to record an out in the sixth inning in any of the six turns. The Wichita State product was ripped for five runs on six hits - two homers - and two walks in five innings by the Chicago Cubs on Thursday while yielding a pair of home runs. Pelfrey's last win came against Stroman in Toronto on June 17, when he allowed one run and four hits without walking a batter in six frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (foot) was fitted for a cast and could miss the rest of the season.

2. Garcia left Monday’s game as well and was diagnosed with a head contusion.

3. Toronto purchased the contract of Brett Oberholtzer from Triple-A Buffalo and activated fellow LHP J.P. Howell from the disabled list.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 8, White Sox 2

Preview: Mets at Rockies

Gracenote

Jul 31, 2017

The Colorado Rockies begin August holding down a wild card spot in the National League and boasting some veteran additions that should help in the stretch run, beginning with the first of three against the visiting New York Mets on Tuesday. A few days after shoring up their bullpen with the acquisition of Pat Neshek, the Rockies obtained veteran catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Sunday in a deal with Texas.

Colorado split a day-night doubleheader at Washington on Sunday, producing just four hits in a 3-1 loss in the nightcap, and it entered Monday's non-waiver trade deadline day up 5 1/2 games up on Milwaukee in the push for the second wild card. Gerardo Parra had the one RBI for the Rockies and is batting .443 with 17 RBIs since coming off the disabled list July 7. The Mets are 10 1/2 games behind Colorado in the wild-card race and picked up Miami Marlins closer A.J. Ramos before parting ways with reliever Addison Reed, who was traded to Boston on Monday. They give the ball to lefty Steven Matz, who opposes Jeff Hoffman in a matchup of young hurlers who have struggled of late.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (2-4, 5.51 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jeff Hoffman (6-3, 5.58)

Matz was 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA through his first five starts, but he's gone 0-3 with a 14.18 ERA over his last four outings. The second of those difficult starts came against Colorado on July 16, when the 26-year-old was shelled for seven runs and nine hits in an inning of work. Matz, who will pitch at Coors Field for the first time, has been reached for 19 hits in seven frames in his career against the Rockies, and Charlie Blackmon (4-for-6, two doubles) and Mark Reynolds (3-for-5, two doubles) have given him fits.

Hoffman has had a plunge similar to that of Matz, carrying a 2.25 ERA through mid-June but giving up 35 earned runs in 37 1/3 innings over a span of seven starts since. Among his better outings in the stretch was a win opposite Matz at Citi Field on July 16, as he surrendered four runs in six frames. The 24-year-old New York native has a 7.79 ERA in seven games (six starts) at home in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado has won six of its last seven at home.

2. Mets 3B Wilmer Flores is batting .355 with four homers in a 10-game hot stretch.

3. Lucroy is 3-for-29 over his last nine games.

PREDICTION: Rockies 8, Mets 6

MLB | Diamondbacks vs Cubs

Play on: Diamondbacks +163 at 5Dimes

Game Analysis

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Tuesday MLB Free Pick Arizona Diamondbacks Money Line (+) @ Chicago Cubs @ 8:05 ET - The Diamondbacks are off of a loss but had won 7 of their prior 12 and have only lost 2 straight games once in the past two weeks. That said, there is a good shot of a bounce back game from Arizona here and they're offering great line value here as a sizable dog. Patrick Corbin gets the start for the Dbacks and he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his last 3 starts. That included a pair of solid efforts on the road so don't be fooled by his full season road record as Corbin does appear to be turning things around away from home. Also, the Arizona southpaw has enjoyed success versus the Cubs in his career with a perfect 3-0 record and 3.32 ERA as a starter versus Chicago. The Cubs will have Jon Lester on the mound for this one. He has a 7.50 ERA in his last two home starts versus the Diamondbacks. Though Lester has been pitching well of late he has allowed a pair of homers in each of his last two starts. Also, he is only a modest 4-3 in home starts this season. The Cubs are 18-22 (DOWN $9,400) in their games versus teams with a winning record this season. Arizona is 5-3 (UP $3,600) as a road dog in a price range of +125 to +175 this season. Look for the Diamondbacks to improve to 12-5 this season in Tuesday games as they get the upset at a great price here! Free Pick on Arizona Diamondbacks on the money line Tuesday evening. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

Game Analysis

Rocketman Sports FREE MLB play Tuesday 8-1-17
NY Mets @ Colorado 8:40 PM EST
Play On: Colorado -126 (Matz/Hoffman) Listed
The NY Mets travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies on Tuesday night. The NY Mets are 48-55 SU overall this year while Colorado comes in with a 60-46 SU overall record on the season. Steven Matz is 2-4 with a 5.51 ERA overall this year and 0-2 with a 16.00 ERA his last 3 starts. Matz is 0-2 with an 11.57 ERA in his 2 career starts vs Colorado. NY Mets are allowing 5.5 runs per game on the road this year and 5.4 runs per game their past 7 games overall. Colorado is scoring 5.3 runs per game overall this year, 6.3 runs per game at home this season and 5.5 runs per game against left handed starters. NY Mets are 9-23 this year against a team with a winning record. We'll recommend a small play on Colorado tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

MLB | Mets vs Rockies

Play on: Rockies -135 at betonline

Game Analysis

I'm recommending a play on the Colorado Rockies with Jeff Hoffman over Steven Matz. The Mets' lefty is an absolute mess right now, having allowed 21 earned runs, 34 hits, and 4 home runs in his last four starts, spanning just 13 1/3 IP. It's tough to imagine Matz getting healthy at Coors Field where the Rockies crush opposing pitchers, averaging 6.33 rpg. It's also tough to imagine Matz getting much help from a bullpen ranked 27th in MLB in ERA. Jeff Hoffman hasn't exactly been tearing things up in the runs allowed column, but he's lasted six or more innings in four of his last six starts and he's barely been missing his spots as some close to the Rockies have stated. The Mets have won just 8 of their last 31 against teams with a winning record, while the Rockies aim for their 6th straight win against pitchers with a WHIP higher than 1.30. I'm backing the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

MLB | PHI vs LAA

Play on: UNDER 8½ -120

Game Analysis

1* Bonus Play UNDER Phillies/Angels.
This number is just a little high in our opinion:
Aaron Nola: He’s 8-6 with a 3.17 ERA. Nola most recently struck out ten over six scoreless innings in a victory over the hard-hitting Astros on Wednesday. The ten K’s were a career-high for the Phillies’ starter. Nola owns a solid 3.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 and is 7-2 with a 3.23 ERA in all “night” games this year.
Ricky Nolasco: He’s 4-12 with a 5.07 ERA. Nolasco most recently gave up three runs off nine hits over 6.2 innings while striking out four in what turned out to be a 10-4 loss to the Indians on Wednesday.
The bottom line: For the most part MLB handicapping comes down to the starting pitching and often the best indicator we have when trying to properly assess a starting pitcher is “recent performance.” Recent form exhibited by each of tonight’s starting pitchers suggests than runs could be at a premium in this one. Consider the UNDER.

Game Analysis

Play - Colorado Rockies w/Hoffman vs Matz (Game 962).
Edges - Rockies: Hoffman 2-0 vs NL East opponents this season… Mets: Matz 0-3 vs NL West opponents this season, and 1-5 as a dog this season… With Matz sporting a 6.48 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP in his last seven overall starts, we recommend a 1* play on Colorado. Thank you and good luck as always.
