Current Conditions - Pittsburgh

P/SUNNY 67 °F

GAME: New York Mets (31-24) at Pittsburgh Pirates (30-26)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets both are sitting in second place in their respective National League divisions and looking to move up, though neither team appears to be at the top of its game of late. Both clubs got an unscheduled day off with Monday’s rainout and the Pirates will be looking to win for the second time in their last seven games when they host the Mets in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh was on the verge of a series win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday before squandering a three-run lead and absorbing a 5-4 loss. The Mets are coming off their own one-run loss – 1-0 at Miami – and are losers of five of their last eight to fall two games behind Washington in the NL East. New York’s problem is on offense, as the team is averaging just 2.6 runs in its last eight contests while totaling eight in five losses over that span. The Pirates aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard but did show some signs of breaking out with a total of 12 runs in their last two games, while Jung Ho Kang added two more hits on Sunday and is 6-for-16 with two home runs, three doubles and four RBIs in four contests this month to lead Pittsburgh's attack.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (7-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Jonathon Niese (5-2, 4.36)

Matz had a streak of seven straight winning starts come to an end when he was reached for three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings without factoring in the decision against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. The 25-year-old walked two batters in that outing, matching the total from his previous four turns. Matz, who has posted a 1.51 ERA over his last eight starts, will be making his first career appearance against Pittsburgh.

Niese was drafted by New York in 2005 and stayed with the organization until being shipped to the Pirates over the winter in the deal that brought second baseman Neil Walker to the Mets. Niese got off to a rough start but is settling in nicely with his new team and allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four outings. The 29-year-old settled for a no-decision at Miami on Wednesday, when he was charged with two runs on six hits and three walks in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Walker is batting .279 with 13 home runs for the Mets and is operating out of the cleanup spot in the order with 1B Lucas Duda and 3B David Wright on the disabled list.

2. Pirates LF Starling Marte is 7-for-12 in his last three games.

3. New York OF Yoenis Cespedes (hip) was limited to pinch-hitting duty on Sunday and is day-to-day.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets both are sitting in second place in their respective National League divisions and looking to move up, though neither team appears to be at the top of its game of late. PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.62 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Juan Nicasio (4-4, 4.75)

DeGrom failed to record the win in any of his last six starts despite allowing three earned runs or fewer in five of those outings. The Stetson product allowed a total of two runs and eight hits while striking out 17 in 14 innings over his last two turns – both no-decisions. DeGrom’s career record against the Pirates tells a similar story, with no decisions despite a total of two runs surrendered over 13 2/3 frames.

Nicasio has a pair of top prospects – right-handers Tyler Glasnow and Jameson Taillon – breathing down his neck for the No. 5 spot in the rotation and is just 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA over his last five turns. The 29-year-old Dominican turned in the lone quality start in that span last time out, when he held Miami to three runs in six innings. Nicasio has done his best work this season at PNC Park and owns a 4-1 record with a 3.49 ERA in front of the home fans.

Preview: Cubs at Phillies

GAME: Chicago Cubs (40-16) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-30)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs will try to clinch their fifth straight series victory when they take on the host Philadelphia Phillies in the second of a three-game series Tuesday. The Cubs have won 11 of their last 13 games – including a 4-0 mark against the Phillies during that span – to continue their best start since 1907.

The Cubs improved to 38-0 when leading after eight innings with a 6-4 win in the series opener, but the Phillies certainly made things interesting with four runs on a pair of home runs in the ninth before Hector Rondon closed the door. The win improved the Cubs to an MLB-best 18-8 on the road and gave them a double-digit lead in the division for the first time since Sept. 22, 2008. The Phillies, on the other hand, have dropped nine of their last 11 after falling to 0-8 on Mondays, but they’ve done a nice job of bouncing back with a 5-3 record on Tuesdays. Cubs starting pitchers are 8-1 with a 1.32 ERA over the past 11 games.
TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 2.84 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (2-8, 3.93)
Hendricks has turned in two straight excellent outings, following up his complete game win against the Phillies with a strong performance to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. The 26-year-old allowed two runs on three hits over eight innings to notch his sixth quality start in 10 outings. Hendricks has won both of his starts against the Phillies, posting a 2.30 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.
Eickhoff has had more than his share of tough luck, suffering four of his eight losses in spite of quality starts. One of those came Thursday, when the 25-year-old held Milwaukee to two runs over 6 2/3 innings but was tagged with the loss in a 4-1 decision. Eickhoff is 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS
1. Chicago LF Jorge Soler left Monday’s game with a left hamstring injury and is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.
2. Phillies SS Freddy Galvis snapped an 0-for-22 skid with a three-run homer in the ninth Monday against RHP Justin Grimm.
3. Cubs CF Dexter Fowler went 3-for-4 on Monday, including a double in the first inning – his MLB-best 26th hit leading off a game.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (30-27) at Baltimore Orioles (33-23)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles took advantage of the slumping Kansas City Royals and jumped into sole possession of first place in the American League East with a win in the series opener on Monday. The Royals will try to even the series and snap a five-game slide when they send Yordano Ventura to the mound on Tuesday in the middle contest of the three-game set.

Baltimore has won five of its last six and received strong pitching performances in the last two contests after surviving on the strength of its offense. Mike Wright turned in a solid outing and kept the Orioles in the game long enough on Monday for the offense to show up, and home runs by Mark Trumbo, Matt Wieters and Manny Machado over the final two innings led to a 4-1 triumph. The Royals are looking for any signs of life at all from an offense that has totaled seven runs in the last five games and just three in the past four contests. Kansas City fell to 11-20 on the road with Monday’s setback and is 0-5 on its 10-game trip.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Yordano Ventura (4-3, 4.82 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6, 6.59)

Ventura bounced back from a horrible start with a solid outing at Cleveland on Thursday, yielding two runs – one earned – on seven hits and two walks in six innings. The 25-year-old was ripped for seven runs and a pair of homers by the Chicago White Sox on May 28 but kept the ball in the ballpark against the Indians. Ventura produced his best start of 2016 versus the Orioles on April 24, yielding one run and three hits over seven innings in a victory.

Jimenez failed to make it through the sixth inning for the fifth straight start on Thursday, when he tossed five hitless frames before getting rocked for five runs without recording an out in the sixth against Boston. The 32-year-old Dominican has allowed a total of 28 runs – 25 earned – in 21 2/3 frames over his last five outings. Jimenez was blasted for seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings at Kansas City in his lone appearance against the Royals last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Trumbo has homered four times in his last five games and leads the majors with 19 blasts.

2. Royals INF Cheslor Cuthbert left Monday’s game with an elbow contusion after being hit with a throw.

3. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar is 2-for-20 with five strikeouts in his last five games.

Carlos Beltran's power stroke has been one of the few factors helping to keep the New York Yankees afloat. Beltran looks to follow up a heroic effort when he leads the host Yankees into the second of four straight games against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

New York trailed 2-0 until the seventh inning in Monday's series opener before back-to-back homers by Brian McCann and Starlin Castro tied it, and Beltran delivered the decisive blow with a tiebreaking three-run shot in the eighth en route to a 5-2 win. It was Beltran's 10th home run in less than a month and his 14th this season after he produced 19 in 133 games in 2015. The Angels fell to 2-2 on their seven-game road trip while dropping their sixth straight game at Yankee Stadium. They will give the ball to lefty David Huff, who was recalled from the minors to take the spot of the injured Nick Tropeano.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH David Huff (2015: 0-0, 9.00 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Michael Pineda (2-6, 6.41)

Huff owns a 5.08 ERA in 118 career games (55 starts) in the majors, the most recent of which took place last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He began the year in the Kansas City Royals system but opted out of his deal and signed with the Angels last month, posting a 5.40 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Salt Lake. The 31-year-old, who has a 5.62 mark in his career as a starter, was 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 41 games with the Yankees in 2013 and 2014.

Pineda had perhaps his best start of an otherwise difficult season with 5 2/3 innings at Detroit on Thursday, allowing one run and striking out eight. It marked the first outing this season in which the 27-year-old has not allowed a home run while also not issuing a walk. Pineda yielded seven runs in five frames in his lone career start against the Angels and third baseman Yunel Escobar is 7-for-15 with a pair of homers against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels are 3-12 in their last 15 games at Yankee Stadium.

2. New York LHP Andrew Miller has 12 strikeouts in his last six innings after striking out the side in the eighth and picking up the win on Monday.

3. Los Angeles DH Albert Pujols has 572 career home runs, one shy of Harmon Killebrew for 11th on the all-time list.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (30-27) at Cincinnati Reds (21-36)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Mike Leake returns to the city where he spent the first 5 1/2 seasons of his career and will take the mound for the visiting St. Louis Cardinals in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Leake goes for his fifth win in six starts as the Cardinals look to win their third in a row and move four games above .500 for the first time.

Leake compiled a 62-47 record during his tenure in Cincinnati before he was shipped to San Francisco at last year's trade deadline and eventually signed a free-agent deal with St. Louis. Leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter has been on a tear for the Cardinals, batting .429 with eight extra-base hits in as many games since coming off the paternity list. The Reds were denied a three-game sweep and a fifth consecutive victory after squandering a five-run lead in Sunday's 10-9 loss to Washington. Cincinnati's pitching allowed 26 runs in losing two of three games in St. Louis in mid-April.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Mike Leake (4-4, 3.82 ERA) vs. Reds LH John Lamb (1-3, 5.58)

Leake continued his string of strong performances by holding Milwaukee to two runs and five hits over six innings to post his fourth victory in his last five starts. After surrendering at least four runs in each of his first five turns, Leake has permitted a total of six runs over his last five outings -- four of which have been away from home. Leake made 86 appearances (85 starts) at Great American Ball Park, logging a 34-26 record and 4.31 ERA.

Lamb halted a three-start losing streak with his best performance of the season, allowing one run on six hits over a career-high seven innings in the thin air of Colorado. The 25-year-old Californian lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his previous turn at Milwaukee and was battered for six runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers. Although he has yet to win at home, Lamb has pitched better in three starts at Great American Ball Park, posting an 0-1 record and 2.81 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals 1B Matt Adams, a .344 lifetime hitter versus Cincinnati, has hit safely in six straight games overall and 11 of 12.

2. Although the Reds scored 22 runs versus the Nationals, they also struck out 37 times -- a team record for a three-game home series.

3. Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is expected to be activated off the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and shifted to third base.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (31-28) at Detroit Tigers (29-28)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan

The Detroit Tigers have won four straight to move one game over .500 and are crushing the ball on offense. The Toronto Blue Jays are capable of putting up plenty of runs as well and will take another stab at matching the Tigers when they visit Comerica Park for the middle contest of their three-game series on Tuesday.

Detroit put up a total of 33 runs in its last four games and reached a season high in scoring with Monday’s 11-0 thrashing in the series opener. The production came from the bottom-third of the order in the win, with No. 7 hitter Justin Upton belting a homer to go along with three runs scored and three RBIs and No. 8 hitter James McCann adding a three-run blast. The Blue Jays were coming off back-to-back series wins over American League East rivals New York and Boston in which the pitching staff surrendered an average of 2.5 runs. Toronto managed a total of three hits in Monday’s setback - two of which came from No. 9 hitter Darwin Barney, who is getting regular at-bats with Troy Tulowitzki on the disabled list.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (5-1, 2.99 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matt Boyd (0-1, 3.94)

Sanchez is riding a string of three straight quality starts and dominated the Yankees on Wednesday. The 23-year-old scattered seven hits – only one for extra bases – over 6 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out six in the win. Sanchez has made three relief appearances against the Tigers in his career, yielding a total of two hits over five scoreless frames.

Boyd was part of the package the Tigers received in the trade that sent David Price to Toronto last season and is getting a chance to stick in the rotation with Anibal Sanchez in the bullpen. Boyd started against New York on Thursday and was reached for four runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings to suffer his first loss. The Oregon State product made a start against the Blue Jays after the trade last August and was ripped for five runs and seven hits – three homers – in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers CF Cameron Maybin is 9-for-21 with five runs scored in his last five games.

2. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson, who is battling a thumb injury, is 0-for-8 in his last three contests.

3. Upton is 4-for-8 with five RBIs in the last two games to lift his batting average to .225.

GAME: Houston Astros (28-31) at Texas Rangers (35-22)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers look to maintain their mastery of in-state rival Houston when the American League West foes continue a four-game series in Arlington on Tuesday. Rougned Odor's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Rangers to a dramatic 6-5 win in Monday's series opener, giving Texas a 7-0 record against the Astros in 2016.

The first-place Rangers, who are 22-9 at home, have also won four straight overall, eight of their last nine and 13 of 16. Texas starter Cole Hamels will try to improve to 3-0 against Houston this season when he gets the nod opposite fellow lefty Dallas Keuchel. Hamels has allowed two earned runs in 14 2/3 innings versus the Astros and struck out a season-high 11 in their previous encounter last month. Keuchel gave up seven runs in that meeting but has recovered with consecutive quality starts for the first time in 2016.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (3-7, 5.50 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (5-1, 3.39)

Keuchel followed up his rough outing versus Texas with seven solid innings in a win over the Los Angeles Angels and then six more in a hard-luck loss to Arizona on Thursday. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner gave up three runs, struck out six and kept the ball in the yard for just the second time in his last six outings. The 28-year-old also surrendered a season-high 13 hits at Texas on April 22 and owns a 6.75 ERA in seven career starts at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Hamels had a no-decision after allowing three runs and six hits in seven frames at Cleveland on Wednesday. He gave up one home run and has surrendered nine in his last five starts, lifting his career high home run rate to 1.7 per nine innings. Astros catcher/designated hitter Evan Gattis is 7-for-20 with three home runs against Hamels.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas is 11-4 in one-run games.

2. Houston 2B Jose Altuve had a three-run homer Monday and is batting .420 during a 12-game hitting streak.

3. Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Monday he would rely on a closer-by-committee for the foreseeable future.

GAME: Miami Marlins (30-27) at Minnesota Twins (16-40)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Miami Marlins have won four of their last six despite struggling to find some consistent offense. The sputtering Minnesota Twins have dropped six of their last seven primarily due to their opponent being too comfortable at the plate, but will look to alter their fortunes on Tuesday when they open a three-game interleague series against the visiting Marlins.

Miami scored just one run on Sunday to salvage the finale of its weekend set with the National League East-rival New York Mets and 17 total during its last six contests. Giancarlo Stanton was given Sunday off as the slugger attempts to work his way out of a horrific 8-for-73 (.110) slump in his last 21 games. Veteran Joe Mauer had four hits and drove in three runs as Minnesota dropped three of four to Tampa Bay, but fried the Marlins by going 12-for-29 (.414) with two homers among four extra-base hits and eight RBIs in seven career encounters. Fellow infielder Eduardo Nunez is 21-for-50 (.420) with four homers and 11 runs scored in his last 11 games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (3-3, 3.72 ERA) vs. Twins LH Pat Dean (1-2, 4.15)

Conley carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning on Wednesday before finishing his nine-strikeout performance with a no-decision versus Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old has fared well on the road, posting a 2-0 mark with a 2.93 ERA while surrendering just one homer in 30 2/3 frames. Conley, who has yet to face Minnesota in his career, was selected by the Twins in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft before opting to attend Washington State.

Dean was taken deep for the fourth consecutive outing on Wednesday and yielded four runs on nine hits in five innings in a 5-1 setback to Oakland. The 27-year-old's performance proved to be a step back after permitting a total of four runs on seven hits in his previous two outings (13 frames). Dean, who will be making his fourth career start and first versus Miami, has been doing his best to work the corners with his slider and changeup - to mixed results at best.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami RHP A.J. Ramos has recorded 27 consecutive saves, including a franchise-tying 18 to begin the season.

2. Minnesota has yielded 37 runs in its last seven contests and boasts a gaudy 5.04 team ERA for the season.

3. The Marlins and Twins are playing a regular-season game for the first time since 2013.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (25-32) at Milwaukee Brewers (26-31)

Former National League MVP Ryan Braun looks to become the fifth player in team history to reach 1,500 career hits when the Milwaukee Brewers host the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game interleague set. Braun has only one hit in nine at-bats versus the Athletics, but he is batting .337 at home this season.

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy is in the midst of a torrid stretch, going 17-for-33 during a nine-game hitting streak to boost his batting average 41 points to .316. Milwaukee has won five of eight after settling for a four-game split in Philadelphia with an 8-1 loss in Sunday's series finale. Oakland appeared to be turning its season around by ripping off five straight victories, but it was outscored 23-9 in a three-game sweep at Houston over the weekend to drop back into last place in the American League West. Ex-Brewer Khris Davis, acquired from Milwaukee in the offseason, leads the Athletics in homers (14) and RBIs (36) but had to exit Sunday's game with an issue related to getting plunked on the elbow a day earlier.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (2-3, 6.16 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (3-3, 4.53)

Despite an ugly ERA, Manaea is coming off a strong outing in which he registered a season-high eight strikeouts while limiting Minnesota to one run on five hits over six innings. It was the third quality start in the past four outings for the 24-year-old Manaea, who has pitched only once away from home -- with disastrous results. He lasted only 2 2/3 innings in his third career start at Boston on May 10 and was shelled for eight runs and 10 hits.

Davies won his second straight start with a sensational performance against St. Louis, tossing eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball while notching a career-high nine strikeouts. It marked the fifth time during his six-start unbeaten streak that Davies has permitted two earned runs or fewer and the first time he pitched beyond six innings. Davies has been solid at home with a 2-2 record and 3.41 ERA in his six starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics C Stephen Vogt is riding an 11-game hitting streak.

2. Brewers RHP Jeremy Jeffress has converted 15 of his 16 save opportunities.

3. Davis homered 11 times in May to become the first Oakland player with that many in a month since Jason Giambi (13) in September 2000.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 8:10 PM EST

The Washington Nationals have seen the performance of their pitching staff fluctuate wildly as they prepare to wind up a nine-game road trip with a three-game interleague set against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The Nationals allowed six runs in a three-game sweep at Philadelphia before giving up 22 and barely escaping a sweep at Cincinnati.

Reigning National League Player of the Month Daniel Murphy was hitless in his first eight at-bats versus the Reds before breaking out with three hits Sunday, including a homer, to raise his major league-leading batting average to .384. Slumping Bryce Harper, the 2015 NL MVP, snapped out of a 5-for-35 funk with his first three-hit game since April 15 as Washington posted its 19th road win -- tied for the best in baseball. Chicago won 23 of its first 33 games but is in danger of falling back to the .500 mark for the first time this season after getting swept in Detroit. The White Sox have dropped 10 of 12 and allowed at least five runs on eight occasions, prompting the move to acquire right-hander James Shields from San Diego.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Joe Ross (5-4, 2.37 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Mat Latos (6-1, 4.02)

On a staff with high-profile starters Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, Ross continues to distinguish himself with a string of consistent solid efforts. He won his second straight start by limiting Philadelphia to one run on three hits over seven innings after shackling St. Louis on a run and six hits over seven frames in his previous outings. Although Ross has endured a four-start losing streak, he's permitted two earned runs or fewer in eight of 10 turns.

Latos carries one of the league's most deceptive records into Tuesday's start -- he has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six outings and pitched beyond 5 1/3 innings once in that span. Latos sported a microscopic 0.74 ERA after winning his first four starts, but he has surrendered eight homers over his last six turns. Latos does own a solid track record versus Washington with a 4-2 record and 2.53 ERA in nine career starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox CF Austin Jackson (turf toe) has missed six straight games, but LF Melky Cabrera is expected back from a family emergency leave.

2. Nationals C Wilson Ramos is 9-for-16 with two homers, six RBIs and six runs scored during a five-game hitting streak.

3. Shields is expected to make his White Sox debut in Wednesday's middle game of the series.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Zack Greinke has put his early-season issues behind him and aims to win his fifth consecutive start when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Tampa Bay Rays in Tuesday's middle contest of a three-game series. The right-hander had a 6.16 ERA through his first five starts but now is in a groove and is looking to win for the seventh time in his past eight decisions.

Greinke, who signed a six-year, $206.5 million contract as a free agent in the offseason, was fantastic in his last start when he struck out a season-best 11 while blanking the Houston Astros on four hits over seven innings. He will try to slow down the torrid Rays — who have won four straight games — as well as red-hot third baseman Evan Longoria, who reached base three times with a single and two walks in Monday's series-opening 6-4 victory. Longoria, who was named American League Player of the Week on Monday, hit five homers in four games before failing to go deep in the opener and is 17-for-38 with 14 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. Arizona had lost six of its last eight games and is just 9-21 at home, the second-worst mark in the majors behind the Atlanta Braves (6-23).

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (2-3, 5.46 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (7-3, 4.29)

Moore already has served up 12 homers, including six during his last four starts. He has struggled on the road with an 0-1 record and 6.33 ERA in four outings but received a no-decision Thursday against Minnesota when he gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings. Moore, who has never faced the Diamondbacks, has a 7.34 ERA in his past six starts.

Greinke has allowed just 20 hits and walked two during his four-start winning streak in which he has begun to look like the pitcher who went 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He has been woeful at home despite winning his last two such outings and is 3-3 with a 6.54 ERA and .312 batting average against in seven starts at Chase Field. Greinke is 3-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 15 career appearances (12 starts) against the Rays and has struggled against Logan Morrison (5-for-10) while faring well against Longoria (4-for-22, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Morrison was 0-for-3 with two walks in the opener after belting four homers over the previous three games.

2. Arizona LF David Peralta (wrist) was activated from the disabled list and went 2-for-3 with a homer on Monday, while RHP Silvino Bracho was optioned to Triple-A Reno.

3. Tampa Bay CF Desmond Jennings homered and matched his season high of three hits in the opener.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 07 - 10:10 PM EST

The San Diego Padres might be having a porous campaign but they continue to dominate the visiting Atlanta Braves at Petco Park. The Padres notched their 11th consecutive home victory over the Braves when they prevailed 7-2 on Monday to keep Atlanta winless in downtown San Diego since the 2012 season.

The Padres are 4-2 in their last six games and seemed to have responded well to recent public criticism from executive chairman Ron Fowler, who termed the players as "miserable failures" due to the team's poor season. There were no problems in the series opener as second baseman Yangervis Solarte smacked a three-run homer and right fielder Matt Kemp drove in two runs to lead a 11-hit attack to brighten the team's mood. "I try to talk to everybody and pull everybody together," Solarte told reporters. "That's the most important thing for me. If you play happy, everything is happy, you know?" The Braves aren't feeling all that joyous as they have lost five straight games and seven of their last nine and their 16-41 mark is worst in the majors.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Aaron Blair (0-4, 7.55 ERA) vs. Padres RH Colin Rea (3-2, 4.85)

Blair is looking for his elusive first career victory as he makes his eighth start of the campaign. The 24-year old was torched for six runs and five hits in four innings in his last outing when he lost to the San Francisco Giants. Blair is 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in two road starts, including a start in Pittsburgh in which he allowed nine runs and nine hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Rea is winless over his last four turns and hasn't pitched more than 5 1/3 innings in any of the starts. He allowed six runs (five earned) and six hits in 5 1/3 innings in his last outing when San Diego blew a 12-2 lead against Seattle and suffered a 16-13 loss. Rea defeated the Braves in his lone career start against them when he gave up two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings Aug. 17 in his second big-league outing.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves have been outscored 33-10 and blanked twice during their five-game skid.

2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers has multiple hits in five of the past six games and is 12-for-26 with three homers and eight RBIs in June.

3. Atlanta SS Chase d'Arnaud had three hits in the opener and is 9-for-25 over the past six games.

The Cleveland Indians have yet to lose in June and seek their seventh consecutive victory when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for the second contest of their four-game series. Cleveland continued its surge with a 3-1 victory over Seattle on Monday and has outscored its opponents 33-11 during the six-game winning streak.

The Indians have allowed just three runs in their last four contests to move a season-best eight games above .500 while opening a 2 1/2-game lead over Kansas City in the American League Central. Cleveland's Carlos Santana has strung together back-to-back two-hit performances after experiencing a 3-for-24 funk during which he didn't score or drive in a run. The slumping Mariners have dropped four straight contests and eight of their last 11 to fall four games behind first-place Texas in the AL West. Seattle's Robinson Cano was hitless in four at-bats with three strikeouts on Monday to end a streak in which he reached base in a career-best 34 consecutive games.

Anderson is being recalled from Triple-A Columbus to pitch after scheduled starter Carlos Carrasco was pushed back a day to get more rest and Wednesday starter Danny Sanchez (shoulder) was scratched. This will be Anderson's eighth start of the season, and his best one was right before he was demoted as he struck out nine and gave up one run and five hits in seven innings versus the Chicago White Sox on May 23. He was trounced by the Mariners on April 21, when he gave up five runs and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Miley was torched by San Diego in his last start, when he gave up nine runs and 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision. It was his second consecutive poor outing as he has allowed 14 runs and 18 hits in 8 2/3 frames during the stretch. Miley is 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA in two career starts against the Indians and has experienced issues with Juan Uribe (8-for-26) and Rajai Davis (3-for-7, two homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Indians denied a Yahoo! Sports report that they have "serious concern" over the health of injured LF Michael Brantley (shoulder): "There's been no setbacks," manager Terry Francona told reporters. "Nothing's changed."

2. Seattle SS Ketel Marte (thumb) was activated from the disabled list on Monday and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his return, while OF Stefen Romero was demoted to Triple-A Tacoma.

3. Cleveland 1B Mike Napoli struck out in all four at-bats on Monday after homering in six of his previous 10 games.

The Colorado Rockies attempt to post three consecutive victories for the first time in three weeks when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Colorado has not won three in a row since a five-game streak from May 11-17 but is in line to do just that after following a 10-3 triumph at San Diego on Sunday with a 6-1 victory in Monday's opener as Tyler Chatwood allowed one run and one hit over eight innings to improve to 5-0 on the road.

Trevor Story's impressive rookie season continues as he belted his 16th home run in the win and is riding a six-game hitting streak. Howie Kendrick recorded the lone hit on Monday as Los Angeles had its seven-game home winning streak come to an end. Corey Seager was kept under control after belting five home runs in the Dodgers' three-game sweep of Atlanta over the weekend to raise his season total to a team-leading 14. Los Angeles aims to improve to 4-1 on its six-game homestand as it sends rookie Julio Urias to the mound against Colorado's Eddie Butler, who has yet to defeat the Dodgers in his career.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Eddie Butler (2-3, 5.65 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Julio Urias (0-1, 9.39)

Butler will be making his third straight start and seventh overall this season after being pounded by Cincinnati on Thursday. The 25-year-old Virginian surrendered eight runs and 11 hits over four innings in the loss - his second in as many decisions since defeating the New York Mets on May 14. Butler has not fared well against Los Angeles, going 0-4 with a 7.04 ERA in five career starts.

Urias takes his third shot at his first major-league victory as he makes his Dodger Stadium debut. The 19-year-old Mexican was not treated kindly in his first trip to Wrigley Field as he was tagged for six runs - five earned - and eight hits over five innings of a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Urias lasted only 2 2/3 frames in his initial outing in the majors but escaped with a no-decision after yielding three runs on five hits and four walks against the Mets in New York on May 27.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon has reached base in 32 consecutive games.

2. Los Angeles RHP Casey Fien has retired 13 of the 15 batters he's faced - nine via strikeout - since being claimed off waivers from Minnesota on May 28.

3. Colorado activated LHP Boone Logan (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Miguel Castro to Triple-A Albuquerque.
