Preview: Ottawa at NY Rangers
When: 7:00 PM ET, Tuesday, May 2, 2017
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York

While they may have welcomed the rest, the New York Rangers couldn't have been pleased about receiving an extra day off between games after the manner in which they lost their last contest. The Rangers will be anxious to get back on the ice Tuesday for Game 3 of their Eastern Conference second-round series against the visiting Ottawa Senators, who own a 2-0 lead.

New York was on its way toward evening the series as it held a two-goal advantage with less than 3 1/2 minutes remaining in Game 2. But Jean-Gabriel Pageau took over, scoring three straight goals - including the winner at 2:54 of the second overtime - to complete a four-goal performance and move Ottawa within two victories of the conference final. "It's a special moment," the 24-year-old center told reporters. "I'll remember that, I think, for the rest of my life, for sure, but I want to stop there now. I really want to try to turn the page as quick as possible and focus on the next game." Pageau grabbed the team lead in goals (five) this postseason with his effort, vaulting past Bobby Ryan (four), but has yet to register an assist.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Pageau became just the second player in playoff history to cap a four-goal performance with an overtime winner - joining Joffrey Lupul, who accomplished the feat for Anaheim in Game 3 of the 2006 Western Conference semifinals against Colorado. The four-goal effort also was the first in the postseason since Game 4 of the 2010 Western Conference semifinals, when Detroit's Johan Franzen tallied four times against San Jose. Derick Brassard is tied for the team lead in playoff scoring with eight points but has yet to land on the scoresheet against his former club.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Michael Grabner and Derek Stepan scored short-handed goals in Game 2, helping New York tie the franchise record for most in a playoff game. The Rangers, who lead the league with three short-handers in the postseason, also scored two in Game 7 of the 1992 Patrick Division semifinals against New Jersey. Brady Skjei became the first New York defenseman to record a multi-goal performance in the playoffs since Brian Leetch registered a hat trick in Game 2 of the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals against Philadelphia.

OVERTIME

1. Rangers D Marc Staal appeared in his 100th NHL playoff contest in Game 2 while LW Chris Kreider played in his 73rd, tying Carl Hagelin for 10th place on the franchise list among skaters.

2. Ottawa LW Clarke MacArthur left Game 2 in the second period with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.

3. New York has allowed two 6-on-5 goals in the postseason after yielding only four during the regular season.

Preview: St. Louis at Nashville
When: 9:30 PM ET, Tuesday, May 2, 2017
Where: Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tennessee

The Nashville Predators continue to get strong production from their talented defense corps as they plow through the playoffs and can take control of their Western Conference second-round series when they host the St. Louis Blues for Game 4 on Tuesday. The Predators have received seven goals and 14 assists from their blue-liners in the first seven contests of the postseason, with Ryan Ellis riding a six-game point streak.

“We stress how everyone has to be active,” Ellis told The Tennessean after Nashville took a 2-1 series lead with a 3-1 victory on Sunday. “It’s a five-man game out there. We can’t watch the forwards do everything. The (defense) has to get up and do its part.” The Blues will have to find a way to combat the Predators' versatile offense after being outshot 34-23 in Game 3 as Alex Steen scored their only goal in the second period, when they managed just four shots. Vladimir Tarasenko, who scored twice in a Game 2 victory, was limited to three shots on Sunday. “You play seven games for a reason,” Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo told reporters. “Down one game, but we’ve got a couple days here to get some rest and take a hard look in the mirror to get better.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, Sportsnet, TVA

ABOUT THE BLUES: Coach Mike Yeo made some line changes at practice Monday after stating his team was not competitive enough in Game 3. “I feel like we’re chasing the game way too much,” defenseman Joel Edmundson told reporters. “We’re waiting for something to happen when we should be dictating it.” Yeo moved center Jori Lehtera between Tarasenko (team-high 32 shots) and Jaden Schwartz (team-best seven points) while Paul Stastny reportedly centered Steen and Vladimir Sobotka at Monday’s skate.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: Ellis has tallied in back-to-back games and has three goals in the postseason to go along with five assists, while P.K. Subban (six points) and Roman Josi (three goals, five points) also have made big contributions. “We have great forwards that have the skill level to make a play, make a fake and then find our defensemen when they are open,” Subban told reporters. “We have to continue to do that.” Forwards Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg have added seven points apiece while 13 Predators have recorded a goal in the playoffs.

OVERTIME

1. The Blues are just 2-for-22 with the man advantage in the playoffs and have allowed five power-play goals in eight games.

2. Nashville G Pekka Rinne improved to 28-27 in the playoffs with Sunday’s victory and owns a .950 save percentage in 2016-17.

3. Predators C Calle Jarnkrok won 16-of-19 faceoffs in Game 3 as his team won 62 percent of the draws.

Preview: Washington At Boston
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, May 2, 2017
Where: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts

The Washington Wizards jumped out to a big lead early in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals but quickly fell off the pace and now find themselves in an early hole in the best-of-seven series. The top-seeded Boston Celtics don't intend to let the Wizards out of that hole and will try to dig a little deeper when they host Game 2 on Tuesday.

Washington jumped out to a 16-0 lead and was ahead 38-24 at the end of the first quarter but watched that lead evaporate in the second quarter and disappear entirely in the third as it was outscored 71-42 in the middle two periods. "It seems like every game we're having one of those quarters when we don't play well," Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "(Sunday) was definitely that third quarter. They did a great job of putting ball pressure and getting into us, and we did not do a good job of handling that. Lose the third quarter by 20 points, it's tough to make up." The Celtics used that ball pressure to drive into the lane and kick the ball out to open shooters while going 19-of-39 from 3-point range. Center Al Horford hit one 3-pointer as part of a 10-of-13 afternoon and helped direct the attack while finishing just shy of a triple-double with 21 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE WIZARDS: Washington lost a big piece when starting power forward Markieff Morris went down in the first half of Game 1 with an ankle injury after landing on Al Horford's foot while drawing a foul. "He was in a lot of pain," star point guard John Wall, who collected 20 points and 16 assists in the loss, told reporters. "We were just hoping it wasn't his knee. He has an issue kind of spraining his ankles all the time, but we told him, 'if you don't shoot the free throw you can't come back in,' and he was just trying to get his space and take as much time as he needed." Morris, who hit the free throw before leaving the game, insisted after the contest that he would play Game 2 but others were skeptical after he was seen noticeably limping and reportedly struggled to put on his shoe over the swollen left ankle.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Boston star Isaiah Thomas flew home to Tacoma, Wash., on Saturday for his sister's funeral and flew back across the country in time for the game, during which he delivered 33 points. "I mean, it's tough but it's the playoffs," Thomas told reporters. There's no excuses. I decided to play and I just tried to give it all I got for my team, and we came out with the win." Thomas, who had a tooth knocked out after running into an elbow early in Game 1, added nine assists and buried five of the Celtics' 19 3-pointers.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Celtics SF Jae Crowder went 6-of-8 from 3-point range in Game 1 after shooting 27.3 percent from beyond the arc in the first round.

2. Washington SG Bradley Beal scored 27 points on Sunday and is averaging 29.3 in the last four games.

3. Boston's SG combo of Avery Bradley (four) and Marcus Smart (three) combined for seven steals.

Preview: Utah At Golden State
When: 10:30 PM ET, Tuesday, May 2, 2017
Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, California

The Golden State Warriors have been resting and the top-seeded team in the Western Conference plays for the first time in eight days when it opens the conference semifinals against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday. Golden State swept the Portland Trail Blazers in four games in the first round, while fifth-seeded Utah won a seven-game series against the Los Angeles Clippers that ended on Sunday.

The upstart Jazz received a stellar series performance from All-Star small forward Gordon Hayward while slaying the Clippers to give the franchise its first playoff series win since 2010. "We've never been in the second round, so now that's another first," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters in reference to his three-season tenure. "We don't have to prove that we're not young and inexperienced. We are. There's nothing wrong with that. Maybe that can be an advantage in some way." The extended rest has allowed Warriors All-Star forward Kevin Durant (calf) to recover from an injury that caused him to miss two games in the Portland series. Golden State won two of the three regular-season meetings, with Utah's win coming at Oracle Arena (105-99 on April 14) when Hayward was sidelined with a quadriceps contusion.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Hayward averaged 23.7 points in the series against the Clippers, including a career-best 40 in Game 3, despite being sent home at halftime of Game 4 due to food poisoning. Utah will require another stellar effort from the pending free agent for it to have any chance of upsetting the powerful Warriors. "You can see his confidence out there," Snyder told reporters of Hayward. "He's played through missed shots, contact, hot streaks, you name it. He's handled that with poise, and he's a heck of an offensive player. He's so versatile that he's hard to guard, and we try to use him in a way that allows him to shine in those situations."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Golden State coach Steve Kerr (back surgery complications) is expected to miss the series and it will be up to acting coach Mike Brown to get his players focused, as several of them were chirping that they would have rather played the Clippers than the Jazz due to the lack of nightlife in Utah. Point guard Stephen Curry averaged 29.8 points and made 19 3-pointers in the sweep of Portland and he averaged 26.3 points in three regular-season meetings against the Jazz. Shooting guard Klay Thompson averaged just 18.3 points on 38.8 percent shooting against the Trail Blazers and registered just one 20-point outing.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. This is the second time the Jazz and Warriors are meeting in the Western Conference semifinals -- Utah won the series 4-1 in 2007.

2. Utah C Rudy Gobert (ankle) is close to full health after struggling Sunday.

3. Golden State backup SF Matt Barnes (ankle) is available to play after missing the sweep of the Trail Blazers, while backup PG Shaun Livingston (finger) is questionable after being injured in Game 1 of the series.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Tuesday's picks, betting odds and analysis

Double-Play Picks

Tampa Bay Rays at Miami Marlins (-125, 7.5)

Florida interleague action continues Tuesday with Game 2 of the four-game series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Marlins in Miami. The Rays will send struggling Alex Cobb to the hill while the Marlins will counter with Edinson Volquez.

The former ace of the Rays is still fighting to regain his pre-Tommy John form (now two years since surgery). Since his return from the DL, at the end of last season, the Over has cashed in nine of his 10 starts. It appears oddsmakers are still setting totals based on pre-surgery Alex Cobb - the guy who used to trust his changeup to put hitters away.

On the other side, Volquez is supposed to be the ace of a staff that was certainly impacted by the offseason death of Jose Fernandez. He came over from Kansas City and has stunk it up over five starts with a win/loss record of 0-3 and an ERA of 4.44.

Pick: Over 7.5

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners (-140, 7)

The Mariners return home today after a 10-day road trip and welcome the surprisingly hot Angels to Safeco Field.

Often teams returning from big road trips are situational fades, but the M's had the day off Monday and should be all settled in with their ace on the mound for Tuesday's contest. Lefty James Paxton is 3-0 with a 1.39 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP thus far in 2017 and he has yet to allow a run at home over 15 innings at Safeco.

The Angels are playing pretty well and come to town after taking two out of three games in Arlington against the Rangers over the weekend, but even with those two wins they are still only 5-9 away from Angel Stadium. The M's, on the other hand, are 6-3 at home this season, including five wins in their last six in Seattle.

Pick: Mariners -140

Yesterday: 2-0
Season: 19-16-1 (5-1 over last three days)

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Jeremy Hellickson, Philadelphia Phillies (4-0, 1.80 ERA, $601)

At $601, nobody has made more money for bettors through the first month of the MLB season than Jeremy Hellickson. The efficient right-hander has led the Phillies to wins all five of his starts, allowing two runs or fewer in each.

Hellickson has done an excellent job of keeping runners off the base paths, surrendering just three walks in his 30 innings pitched, including none in his last two outings. He is also holding opponents to a .226 on base percentage. Hellickson and the Phillies are in tough today as they visit the Cubs and are currently +185 underdogs.

Slumping: Wily Peralta, Milwaukee Brewers (4-1, 5.19 ERA, $358)

Wily Peralta has also made bettors some cash early in the season, but that doesn't seem as sustainable as the streaking Hellickson.

Despite the 4-1 record, Peralta has a 5.19 ERA and has been really roughed up in his last two outings. The right-hander has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two starts with a WHIP of 2.22, while allowing five home runs. The Brewers at +163 in St. Louis.

Tuesday's Top Trends

* Under is 9-0 in Masahiro Tanaka's last nine starts vs. Blue Jays. O/U: 8.5.
* Indians are 5-0 in Corey Kluber’s last five starts vs. Tigers. Indians -130.
* Over is 9-0 in Alex Cobb's last nine road starts. O/U: 8 @ Marlins.
* Over is 7-0 in Cardinals last seven overall. O/U: 7.5 vs. Brewers.

Weather to Keep an Eye On

There is some strong hitters winds in the forecast at several MLB ball parks for Tuesday.

In Washington there is will be a 15-17 mile per hour gusting out to right field for the Nationals game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The total is currently 8.5.

In New York, there will be a 14-16 mile per hour wind gusting out to the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium for tonight's Blue Jays-Yankees game. The total is currently 8.5.

In Detroit, the Tigers host the Cleveland Indians at Comerica, where the winds will be gusting at 17-19 miles per hour out to left field. The total is currently 8.

And finally in Boston, winds will be howling at 17-19 miles per hour out to right-center field at Fenway Park when the Red Sox host the Baltimore Orioles. The total is currently 6.5.

Ump of the Day

Joe West: There has been no home town bias when "Country Joe" has been calling balls and strikes this season. The road team is 5-1 when West is behind the plate this season and 6-1 in games dating back to last season. His home team money total is already $-582 and the home team average run margin is -1.67 per game. West will be officiating tonight's Giants-Dodgers game in Los Angeles and the visiting Giants are 8-1 in the last night games with West behind home plate. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are 1-5 in their last six with "Country Joe" back there.
