GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (92-66) at Baltimore Orioles (77-81)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 12:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

With their first American League East title in 22 years under wraps, the Toronto Blue Jays will continue their quest for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs when they conclude their four-game series versus the host Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon. Toronto (92-66), which split a doubleheader on Wednesday, has won two of three from Baltimore and holds a one-game edge over AL Central champion Kansas City (91-67) with four games remaining on the schedule.

Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Justin Smoak each homered in the Blue Jays' 15-2 win in the opener of the doubleheader before the trio was promptly sent to the bench for the nightcap. Manager John Gibbons likely will rest several of his other charges as the club prepares for its first postseason action since Joe Carter ended the 1993 World Series. Toronto saw its six-game winning streak end with an 8-1 setback as the Orioles ending a five-game losing skid in the process. Slugger Chris Davis belted a pair of solo homers in the nightcap after a 1-for-23 stretch in his previous six games, but is 6-for-20 (.300) in his career versus Thursday starter David Price.

TV: 12:05 p.m. ET, RSN (Toronto), MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH David Price (18-5, 2.45 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Tyler Wilson (2-2, 3.60)

Price is vying for his 19th win, which would match his 2010 total with Tampa Bay and fall one short of the career high he set during the 2012 season with the Rays. The 30-year-old Price recorded his fifth consecutive victory on Monday despite allowing five runs in as many innings of a 10-8 triumph over Tampa Bay. Price split a pair of decisions versus Baltimore this season, matching a season-high 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 setback on July 18 before yielding one run in seven framesof a 5-1 victory on Sept. 5.

Wilson rebounded from a disastrous outing with a solid one on Saturday, allowing two runs in six innings to walk away with a no-decision versus Washington. The 26-year-old enjoyed a similarly strong performance against Toronto earlier this season, yielding just one run on five hits in 5 2/3 frames in a no-decision. Wilson has kept the ball in the park in all but one trip to the mound this season, but he has allowed two walks in each of his last four outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The starting time of the contest was moved up seven hours in anticipation of inclement weather across the Mid-Atlantic region.

2. Toronto 2B Ryan Goins is 6-for-9 with four runs scored in the series.

3. Baltimore C Matt Wieters is 9-for-21 with two homers, four RBIs and five runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

GAME: New York Mets (89-69) at Philadelphia Phillies (61-97)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 12:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

It was a bad night in the standings and a worse one on the injury front for the New York Mets, who will try to avert a three-game sweep against the host Philadelphia Phillies in Thursday afternoon's series finale. New York coughed up a five-run lead in Wednesday's 7-5 loss, a defeat compounded when center fielder Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Wilmer Flores were forced to exit the game early.

The Mets maintained a one-game edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the No. 2 seed in the National League and home-field advantage in the Division Series. Cespedes was hit with a pitch on his left hand and suffered bruises to his middle and ring finger while Flores left the game with lower back stiffness. In addition, left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, leaving rookie Sean Gilmartin to make his first start of the season. The Phillies are seeking their fourth consecutive victory after ending New York's streak of nine consecutive series wins against them.

TV: 12:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Sean Gilmartin (3-1, 2.58 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (2-3, 3.07)

Gilmartin has made 49 relief appearances this season but hasn't pitched more than two innings since Aug. 24 at Philadelphia, when he tossed 3 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing three hits and striking out four. He came back three days later against the Phillies and struck out three in 1 2/3 hitless innings. Gilmartin will be followed to the mound by reliever Tim Stauffer, who has allowed five runs in his last four appearances.

Eickhoff, acquired in the deal that sent Cole Hamels to Texas, gave up three runs in seven innings in a loss to the Mets on Aug. 31 but is closing the season on a roll. The 25-year-old Eickhoff ended a five-start winless drought last time out with seven innings of two-run ball against Washington while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. It was the third consecutive seven-inning outing by Eickhoff, who has allowed three runs in that span.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets manager Terry Collins said Cespedes is "OK" but he is planning on resting several starters in the series finale.

2. Phillies SS Freddy Galvis is 6-for-12 with four RBIs and five runs scored in his last three games.

3. Matz, who is dealing with muscles spasms, is expected to pitch this weekend.

Preview: Cubs at Reds

GAME: Chicago Cubs (93-65) at Cincinnati Reds (63-95)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 12:35 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs are simply trying to stay sharp heading into the postseason, and the struggling Cincinnati Reds haven’t provided much resistance. The Cubs, who still have slim hopes of overtaking Pittsburgh for home-field advantage in the National League wild-card game, look to complete a three-game sweep at Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon.

Chicago has allowed just four runs during a four-game winning streak – only one against its starting pitchers – and broke out the bats in a 10-3 pounding of the Reds on Wednesday, sending Cincinnati to its 11th straight defeat. The Cubs hope their starters’ recent dominance carries over to right-hander Jason Hammel, who has struggled while going 4-3 with a 5.52 ERA since the All-Star break. Hammel will oppose rookie left-hander John Lamb, who faces the Cubs for the first time. The Cubs lead the season series 12-6, including a 6-2 edge in Cincinnati.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jason Hammel (9-7, 3.86 ERA) vs. Reds LH John Lamb (1-4, 5.40)

Hammel left his last start before the All-Star break early with a hamstring strain and hasn’t been the same since. He had a 2.86 ERA at the break but has only two quality starts in the second half and gave up three runs and seven hits over four frames in a loss to Pittsburgh last time out. The 33-year-old is 0-1 with a 4.87 ERA in eight games (seven starts) against the Reds and does not have a decision in three meetings this season.

Lamb, who was acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto deal, has had a tough time in his first stint in the majors. The 25-year-old California native has allowed five or more runs in three of his nine outings with just two quality starts. He gave up five runs – and two homers – in two innings of a loss to the New York Mets in his last start.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs INF Starlin Castro went 4-for-5 with a homer Wednesday and is hitting .426 since Sept. 1.

2. Reds RF Jay Bruce had two sacrifice flies Wednesday but is hitless in his last four games and 4-for-36 over his past 10 contests.

3. Cubs starting pitchers have gone at least six innings and allowed three or fewer hits in four straight games for the first time since at least 1910.

Preview: Dodgers at Giants

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (88-70) at San Francisco Giants (83-75)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 3:45 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After experiencing a letdown the day after clinching the National League West, the Los Angeles Dodgers attempt to earn a split of their four-game series against the Giants when they visit San Francisco for the finale Thursday afternoon. Los Angeles secured its third consecutive division title with an 8-0 triumph Tuesday but followed up by recording only two hits in Wednesday's 5-0 setback.

With the defeat, the Dodgers remained one game behind the New York Mets for home field in their upcoming NL Division Series matchup. Los Angeles is slumping at the wrong time, as it enters Thursday having lost nine of its last 12 contests. Conversely, the Giants have won four of their last five games but were eliminated from postseason contention with Tuesday's loss. The Dodgers have the privilege of being the final opponent of San Francisco's Tim Hudson, who wraps up a superb 17-year career by making his 479th start.

TV: 3:45 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (9-9, 3.75 ERA) vs. Giants RH Tim Hudson (8-8, 4.30)

Anderson has been battered in each of his last two outings, allowing totals of 11 runs and 20 hits in 8 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old Texan suffered the loss against Arizona on Sept. 21 but escaped with a no-decision at Colorado on Saturday. Anderson is 1-4 with a 4.97 ERA in eight career starts against San Francisco, including a no-decision Aug. 31 in which he allowed three runs and six hits over five frames.

Hudson lasted only 1 1/3 innings in Oakland on Saturday, yielding three runs — two earned — on one hit and three walks against his former team. The outing was a far cry from the previous three for the 40-year-old native of Georgia, who went 2-0 while allowing two runs and 11 hits over 16 1/3 frames in that span. Hudson, who made his third career relief appearance — and first since 2008 with Atlanta — at Los Angeles on Sept. 1, improved to 8-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 19 career starts versus the Dodgers by giving up two runs in 6 1/3 innings at Dodger Stadium on June 20.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants 3B Matt Duffy set the tone Wednesday with a two-run homer in the first inning and finished 3-for-4 for his second three-hit performance in seven contests.

2. Los Angeles must finish ahead of New York in order to receive home field, as the Mets own the tiebreaker.

3. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt, who already was out for the season with a concussion, underwent minor knee surgery Wednesday.

Preview: Brewers at Padres

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (68-90) at San Diego Padres (73-85)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 6:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres look to halt their skid and avoid a sweep at the hands of Milwaukee when they take on the Brewers in their final home game of the year Thursday afternoon. They'll have to accomplish the feats without Matt Kemp, who is done for the season with a partially torn tendon in his right middle finger.

San Diego suffered its third consecutive loss Wednesday, a 5-0 setback in which it recorded only six hits. Jedd Gyorko and Melvin Upton Jr. each produced two hits for the Padres, who fell to 3-5 on their nine-game homestand and 38-42 overall at Petco Park this year. Milwaukee is seeking its fourth consecutive victory after outscoring San Diego 9-3 over the first two games of the series. Hernan Perez collected three hits and two RBIs on Wednesday as the Brewers improved to 5-4 on their 10-game road trip.

TV: 6:40 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Taylor Jungmann (9-7, 3.64 ERA) vs. Padres RH Ian Kennedy (8-15, 4.38)

Jungmann's winless streak reached four starts last Thursday, when he surrendered six runs and six hits over five innings in a loss at St. Louis. The 25-year-old rookie from Texas has not been victorious since Sept. 3, when he limited Pittsburgh to one run and three hits in six frames. Jungmann won his only career start against San Diego on Aug. 5 as he gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings.

Kennedy has gone six outings without a victory, losing four times in that stretch while receiving two no-decisions — including one against San Francisco last Thursday in which he yielded four runs and 11 hits in five innings. The 30-year-old Californian's last triumph came versus the Cardinals on Aug. 22, when he scattered seven hits and struck out 10 over six scoreless innings for his best turn of the season. Kennedy fell to 2-4 lifetime against the Brewers after surrendering four runs and seven hits in seven frames Aug. 5 at Milwaukee.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kemp finished his first season with San Diego with 100 RBIs, marking the third time in his career he has reached the century mark — and first since recording 126 with the Los Angeles Dodgers

2. Milwaukee INF Elian Herrera is unlikely to play again this season due to a deep bone bruise in his right thigh.

3. San Diego has been shut out 19 times this season.

Preview: Red Sox at Yankees

GAME: Boston Red Sox (78-80) at New York Yankees (86-72)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The scorching Boston Red Sox have done well to delay the New York Yankees' playoff-clinching party and now have their sights set on an end-of-the-season goal themselves. The Red Sox look to extend their longest winning streak of the year and complete a four-game sweep when the rivals square off Thursday night in the Bronx.

Mookie Betts homered twice to help Boston outlast New York 9-5 in 11 innings Wednesday, pushing its run to six wins in a row and pulling within two games of .500 (78-80) with four to play. The Yankees only needed a win to clinch a spot in the wild card game and also failed for the third straight time to reach 10,000 victories in franchise history. Journeyman Rich Hill has been a big part of Boston's late run and looks to extend his surprising streak - he is the only American League pitcher in the last 100 years to record 10-plus strikeouts in his first three starts with a team. Hill gets the start opposite fellow 35-year-old lefty CC Sabathia.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN2, NESN (Boston), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Rich Hill (2-0, 1.17 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (5-10, 4.82)

Hill fanned 10 in his dramatic shutout of Baltimore last time out, becoming the second pitcher in franchise history - along with Pedro Martinez in 1999 - to strike out 10 and walk one or fewer batters in three consecutive outings. He is 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA in his Red Sox career, spanning the three dominant starts and 40 relief appearances. Hill, who appeared in 14 games out of the bullpen for the Yankees last year, has an 8.31 ERA in nine career games (one start) against New York.

Sabathia has worked at least six innings in three straight starts, including 6 2/3 frames of a 5-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday. He gave up four runs and served up two homers after giving up two combined over his previous seven appearances. Sabathia has allowed three runs in 12 innings over two quality starts against Boston this year without factoring into a decision in either.

WALK-OFFS

1. Betts has reached base safely in 33 straight games, during which he has hit .371 with seven homers.

2. Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez (1,065) is tied with Jorge Posada for 11th on the franchise's all-time RBI list.

3. The Red Sox are 28-16 under interim manager Torey Lovullo.

GAME: Minnesota Twins (82-76) at Cleveland Indians (78-79)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Minnesota Twins look to continue their surge toward the second wild-card spot in the American League when they conclude their four-game series versus the host Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Minnesota, which is vying for its first playoff berth since 2010, breezed to a 7-1 triumph in the opener of a doubleheader on Wednesday for its fourth win in a row and seventh in nine outings before falling flat in the nightcap.

Rookies Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano each belted a solo homer in the 10-2 setback for the Twins, who are 1 1/2 games behind Houston for the final postseason slot. Rosario is 5-for-11 in the series and 3-for-5 with a homer this season versus Thursday starter Trevor Bauer. While Minnesota is entertaining playoff aspirations, Cleveland saw its officially come to an end on Wednesday. Yan Gomes is riding an eight-game hitting streak, although he's 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in a small sample size versus Thursday starter Tyler Duffey.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Tyler Duffey (5-1, 3.14 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (11-12, 4.69)

Duffey improved to 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA in his last eight starts on Monday after allowing two runs in six innings of a 6-2 triumph over Detroit. The 24-year-old began that surge with a strong display versus Cleveland, permitting just one hit over six scoreless frames while navigating around a season-high five walks. Duffey has kept the ball in the park in each of his last five trips to the mound and surrendered just one homer in his last eight.

After coming out of the bullpen in his last outing, Bauer gets the nod to start on Thursday. The 24-year-old routinely has struggled versus Minnesota, posting a 1-3 career record with a 6.00 ERA despite emerging victorious in his last meeting. Bauer permitted four runs and seven hits - including three homers - in 6 1/3 innings of a 17-4 rout on Aug. 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier is 0-for-12 in his last three contests after enjoying a six-game hitting streak.

2. Cleveland OF Michael Brantley will miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed right shoulder inflammation.

3. Twins RF Torii Hunter has recorded four RBIs during his four-game hitting streak.

GAME: Miami Marlins (69-89) at Tampa Bay Rays (77-81)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida

Jose Fernandez attempts to finish the season unbeaten while returning to his second home as the Miami Marlins try to avoid a three-game sweep against the host Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. Fernandez, who pitched for Alonso High in Tampa after defecting from Cuba in 2008, will make his 11th start of the year after returning from Tommy John surgery.

Fernandez is 22-8 in 46 starts during his first three seasons, but owns only five wins in 20 road outings. Tampa Bay is 13-6 in interleague play (4-1 against the Marlins) and can finish at .500 overall by winning its final four contests of the regular season, including three against American League East champion Toronto this weekend. Rays starter Jake Odorizzi has allowed three runs or fewer in 19 of his 27 starts overall this season, but accomplished that just twice in his last six outings. Asdrubal Cabrera is 10-for-24 with two homers and eight RBIs over the last seven games for the Rays.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), Sun Sports (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (6-0, 2.91 ERA) vs. Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (8-9, 3.49)

Fernandez gave up a season-high six runs over five innings despite posting a win over Atlanta last time out after allowing three or fewer in each of his first nine starts. The 23-year-old permitted a homer in each of the last two games after limiting opponents to one in the previous eight and has struck out 70 over 58 2/3 innings. Fernandez yielded a career-high seven runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings in his only other start at Tampa Bay in 2013.

Odorizzi has failed to last six innings in his last two starts while allowing eight runs and 15 hits over 10 2/3 frames and has surrendered eight homers in his past five outings. The 25-year-old, who owns a 3.05 ERA at home this year, has pitched 162 1/3 innings and needs six to set a career high. Casey McGehee is 2-for-3 with a double against Odorizzi, who is 0-1 with a 10.00 ERA in two career starts against Miami – none in 2015.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay RHP Brad Boxberger earned saves in the first two games of the series to become the fifth player in franchise history to post 40.

2. Miami 3B Martin Prado is 14-for-33 with 10 RBIs over his last nine games and posted a pair of hits in each of the last three.

3. Tampa Bay OFs Grady Sizemore (8-for-17) and Steven Souza Jr. (9-for-24) are each riding six-game hitting streaks.

GAME: Washington Nationals (80-78) at Atlanta Braves (64-94)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Andrelton Simmons is regarded as one of baseball’s elite defensive players, but the Atlanta Braves’ shortstop is finishing his 2015 season with encouraging offensive production. Simmons and the Braves host the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series Thursday, and the Gold Glove-winning Simmons brings a seven-game hitting streak into the contest.

The Braves are mired in their worst season in a quarter-century, but Simmons is hitting .279 in the second half while striking out just 20 times in 201 at-bats since the All-Star break. While Atlanta has won seven of its past 11, the Nationals – arguably baseball’s most disappointing team – have lost seven of their past nine and need one victory in their final four contests to finish at .500. Right fielder Bryce Harper enters the final four games leading the NL in batting average at .331, but is 3-for-26 in his past eight games. The Nationals lead the season series 13-5, but losses in the first two games of the series give the Braves a 101-100 series edge since the Washington franchise moved from Montreal in 2005.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), SportSouth (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Braves RH Ryan Weber (0-2, 5.91)

Washington’s second-half struggles cannot be blamed on Strasburg, who is 5-2 with a 2.09 ERA while averaging 9.4 strikeouts in nine starts. He has 50 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings across four September starts, giving up one run on three hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk in eight innings Saturday against Philadelphia. Strasburg, whose has struck out 13, 14, 10 and 13 in his past four games, beat the Braves in his only appearance against them this season, but is 2-3 with a 5.60 ERA lifetime at Turner Field.

Weber made a strong impression in his first three major-league starts, but was rocked for seven runs on nine hits in two innings Friday at Miami. The 25-year-old allowed two runs or fewer in two of his first three starts, giving up two runs in a loss to the Phillies Sept. 8 in his big-league debut and one run in seven innings in a no-decision against the Philadelphia on Sept. 19. Weber has held opponents to a .163 average in two home starts, posting a 3.38 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington 3B Yunel Escobar was scratched Wednesday with upper back spasms, missing his third consecutive game.

2. Atlanta C A.J. Pierzynski is 4-for-6 through the first two games of the series, raising his average to .300 on the season, and the 38-year-old is riding a eight-game hitting streak as he seeks his first .300 season since 2009.

3. Braves 1B Freddie Freeman, slowed by a right wrist injury, did not start Wednesday but entered the game for defense in the ninth.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (83-75) at Texas Rangers (86-72)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers look to inch closer to the American League West title when they open a pivotal, season-ending four-game set versus the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The Rangers took two of three from Detroit and can eliminate the Angels from the division title conversation with one victory in the series.

Adrian Beltre launched a two-run homer in Wednesday's 6-2 victory over the Tigers and has collected 32 hits in his last 19 contests. While Texas has won six of nine to hold a three-game advantage over Los Angeles, the latter had claimed seven victories in a row before a season-high four errors led to its undoing in an 8-7 setback to Oakland on Wednesday. Mike Trout homered among his three hits in the series finale versus the Athletics and has recorded 18 hits in the Angels' last 13 games. Trout has tormented Thursday starter Derek Holland in his career, going 10-for-29 (.345) with a pair of homers and nine RBIs.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (6-3, 3.29 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Derek Holland (3-3, 4.99)

Heaney has pitched well in three consecutive starts but has a trio of no-decisions to show for it. The rookie allowed two runs in six innings for the second straight outing on Monday but still is searching for his first win since Sept. 2. Heaney emerged victorious in his lone start versus Texas, permitting two runs and six hits in as many innings of a 13-7 triumph on July 26.

Holland has struggled mightily of late, going 0-2 with a gaudy 8.59 ERA over his last four starts - including a no-decision versus Houston on Monday in which he allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings. The 28-year-old was taken deep three times by the Astros and five times overall during his pronounced stretch. Holland last tasted victory versus Los Angeles, against which he permitted one run and three hits in eight innings of a 2-1 triumph on Sept. 5.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles 2B Johnny Giaviotella has recorded six RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.

2. Texas DH Prince Fielder has registered 13 hits, 12 RBIs and six runs scored in his last eight contests.

3. Angels 3B David Freese is 4-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs in his last two games.

The Kansas City Royals clinched the No. 2 seed in the American League and kept alive their hopes of overtaking Toronto for the best record entering the finale of a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Eric Hosmer's two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Royals to a 5-3 victory Wednesday and assured them of home field for the AL Division Series.

Kansas City is one game behind the Blue Jays with four to play, but Toronto holds the tiebreaker between the teams. Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain's status is in question for the series finale after he fouled a ball off his right knee Wednesday and had to leave with what was diagnosed as a contusion. White Sox left-hander John Danks will be trying to avoid reaching a pair of milestones - another loss will give him 100 for his career and set a personal high for a season with 15. Danks, however, has dominated the Royals with a 10-2 record and 2.57 ERA in 21 career starts.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Kris Medlen (5-2, 4.30 ERA) vs. White Sox LH John Danks (7-14, 4.53)

Medlen had a string of three consecutive solid starts end with a thud in his last turn, when he was battered by Cleveland for six runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. He permitted two earned runs in his previous three starts, a hot streak that followed an ugly outing against the White Sox in which he was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 frames. Medlen is 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in eight appearances (three starts) on the road.

Danks has allowed three runs or fewer in five straight starts, but he has only one win to show for it in that span - a complete-game victory at Kansas City on Sept. 4 in which he yielded one run and seven hits. The 30-year old Danks was a hard-luck loser in his last outing after giving up two runs and six hits over six innings against the New York Yankees. He has stymied Cain and Alcides Escobar, who are a combined 10-for-56 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Hosmer is 3-for-8 with a pair of homers in the series, putting him within one blast of matching his career high of 19 set in 2011.

2. White Sox 1B Jose Abreu hit his 30th homer, joining Ryan Braun and Albert Pujols as the only players to belt 30 in each of their first two years.

3. New Royals closer Wade Davis notched his 15th save in 16 chances Wednesday.

Preview: Rockies at Diamondbacks

GAME: Colorado Rockies (66-92) at Arizona Diamondbacks (77-81)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Walt Weiss is managing the Colorado Rockies for Thursday’s series finale against the host Arizona Diamondbacks, but there’s no guarantee he’ll hold the same position next season. Weiss’ status remains a question mark for the Rockies, who have lost seven of their last 10 games and will finish last in the National League West for the third time in the last four seasons.

Weiss, who has one year remaining on his contract, received a strong measure of support earlier this week from both Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez. “At the end of the day, we weren’t very good this year,” Arenado told the Denver Post. “The blame doesn’t go to (Weiss). He puts the best guys out there and we need to go perform. We weren’t able to do that this year.” The Rockies have dropped 12 of their last 17 meetings with Arizona, which closes the season this weekend with three games at home against Houston. The Diamondbacks could be without outfielder Ender Inciarte, who is battling a bruised shin and was replaced by rookie Socrates Brito in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH David Hale (5-5, 6.01 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (6-5, 3.28)

Hale could strengthen his case for a spot in next season’s rotation with a second consecutive strong start Thursday. The 28-year-old held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run over five frames on Friday, but he’s had an inconsistent campaign with 14 home runs allowed in 73 1/3 innings. Paul Goldschmidt has homered twice in six at-bats against Hale, who is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA in three career games (two starts) against Arizona.

Corbin looks to bounce back from a rough start against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Thursday, when he allowed four runs and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old is 3-2 with a 2.27 ERA over his last six outings while posting a 28-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. DJ LeMahieu is 7-for-19 with a home run against Corbin, who is 5-1 with a 3.90 ERA in nine career starts against Colorado - including 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in two outings this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Arizona OF A.J. Pollock is one home run shy of his first 20-homer/20-stolen base season.

2. Arenado is the fourth Rockies player with at least 40 doubles, 40 home runs and 120 RBI in a season - joining Ellis Burks, Larry Walker and Todd Helton, who accomplished the feat twice.

3. Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler has notched 27 straight saves for the longest active streak in the majors.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2
