Those were constructed during the drug trade, I'm sure corners were cut

Probably true - and there is engineering firm went over the building in 2018 and came to the conclusion that it had serious structural problems that needed to be addressed - hey, some people just let their grass grow tall cuz they dont want to pay - here they just neglected fixing the structural issues to save a few bucks - no biggie

I'm gonna go tomorrow and leave flowers - the jews have always been good people even though the hardcore one kind of keep to themselves

OK, just read that flowers are not accepted by Jews in times of death - so could some of my Jewish RX friends give me an idea as to what I can bring and leave there for someone

I am not sure I believe a firm inspected it in 2018 and found structural problems... cover up? Could be. We will never know.

What about the non Jews that died there? Not allowed to leave them the flowers?

to be honest - Jews like to stick together - even the Argentinians you're seeing on TV are Jewish - I could be wrong but I would imagine everyone that died was Jewish

The concern was laid out in an October 2018 “Structural Field Survey Report,” produced for the condo association by engineer Frank Morabito of Morabito Consultants. Morabito wrote that the “main issue” at Champlain Towers was that the pool deck and outdoor planters “laid on a flat structure,” preventing water from draining. The lack of waterproofing was “a systemic issue” that traced back to a flaw “in the development of the original contract documents” 40 years ago, the report said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the issue was repaired or whether it could have ultimately contributed to the partial collapse. The report documented how the years of standing water on the pool deck had severely damaged the concrete structural slabs below. The problem needed to be addressed quickly, Morabito wrote.

Look at post #5 picture by pool , shows area lower, seems odd ,weight of collapse? Or the poor drainage creating a void or sink over time. Engineer said lack of waterproofing too, if they did not keep up with the necessary coatings on the roof or structure, water always wins on concrete, especially near the ocean.Prayers to all the families, should not happen in the USA with all our regulations and inspections.

Damn...that makes the most sense of anything I've read or seen so far. Excellent post...sad.

There will be 5 or more experts telling us 5 different stories as to what was the cause - all biased - from work on the adjacent building to work on the roof to a sink hole to saltwater erosion to water pooling - who knows

we donated to the greater Miami Jewish federation as they will distribute what is needed to those affected.

you could also send supplies to a local synagogue in the area

I read and I'm not sure it accurate that residents have not been moved out of the remaining building that is still standing. Obviously that structure will be condemned and torn down. That has to happen for the condo owners to be reimbursed so they can settle elsewhere. So many people affected. Not just those who have lost their lives and the loved ones but the survivors in the other building who will have to deal with the guilt and shock for years to come.

That's Miami for you - but they're also Jewish

Probably a mix, predominantly Jewish but I'm sure you got Catholic latinos among the dead. Nevertheless a horrific tragedy.

Yeah, the sister building is still operating - it's not 100% that it will be condemned but it will be looked at through a microscope and could be insanely expensive to repair - I know if I was the engineer I would not want to sign off on anything no matter what repairs were done

Mr. Dusenberry, whose impressions matched those of several other structural engineers who examined the video, said such a failure “would suggest a foundation-related matter — potentially corrosion or other damage at a lower level.” But he said it was not certain that corrosion was the culprit, and added that “you certainly can’t rule out a design or construction error that has survived for 40 years.”

One other clue that a problem started at the bottom of the building: Immediately before the collapse, one of the residents saw a hole of sorts opening near the pool.

Michael Stratton said his wife, Cassie Stratton, who is missing, was on the phone with him and was looking out through the window of her fourth-floor unit when, she told him, the hole appeared. After that, the call cut off.

Curious to see the minutes of the board meeting In 2028/2019 discussing the possible maintenance of the building.

was there a vote? Was there a talk of assessments? Did the board and or residents turn vote against the assessments?

curious to see what their property management company has to say

Well if the engineer told them it was going to cost 8 to 9 million I can see how they did nothing - fuck, the residents probably would have voted against it at the time
