A true underdog matchup, for these two teams, group stage matchups are finals. No one expects them to do much , The U.S. and England look like they are the clear 2 to move on. Well, that’s not what I believe. Slovenia is a good team, a good European team that had to play alot of competition to get here, beating Russia in the playoff was it for me. They play structured defense, and counter attack efficiently. Players such as Dedic and Novakovic can make this morning game a very entertaining one, and I think we will see a 2-0 scoreline, 1 in each half, similar to South Korea and Greece game. That is why I will put a little wager on Slovenia to win by more than 1 as well.<o

This is a bet strictly on pre season performances. Normally I would favor Ghana, but with Michael Essien out, as well as Muntari questionable, I got to favor the hotter team, Serbia. The books see them as the favorite, and apparently the public do to, which kind of makes me nervous, I was surprised to see Serbia the favorite in this one. But with superstars in their backline like Vidic and Ivonovich, I can’t see Ghana penetrating. I still am sticking with a 1 unit play and am looking for a nice positive return. <o

"Clear cut" favorites of group D, Germany, face Australia in their first match. Germany is a team that I have never completely been able to figure out. They are an intimidating group of players to the opposition. Position to position, they are often larger and play more in sync with one another, which in the past can be very attractive football. ie Portugal in euros 2008 and just about every game at home in WC2006. I like Germany to win, and win by more than 1 goal. While Australia might score through the likes of Tim Cahill, I still feel Germany has enough without Ballack, and players like Lucas Podolski, Schweinsteiger and Cacu to bag the goals to grab them 3 points. I also believe he will see the first game of the tournament to go over 2 goals. 3-1 could be on the cards.<o

When I first saw the groups, I said that Denmark would come out, and that they would get a result against the Netherlands, thinking that there were too many internal problems within the dutch team, and the defense was still sketchy. Then I watched Holland play their friendlies, the attack looks great and Wesley and Van Persie look like best friends out there. The D still needs some work but they are looking better. And if that wasn’t enough, a few days before the tournament started I asked my father who he liked the most, and the 60 year old lifetime football fan responded...Holland. I asked him to elaborate, and he gave me a speech about how they are the most potent attacking force in the competition, and how 1 goal seems to never be enough. Also pointing out the defense has gotten better, with a new goalie and a few new fullbacks that will chip in with the attack. Now, without Robben out there, the player of the season for me in club football, I am still confident this team has enough to overcome a stingy Denmark defense. Wesley Sneijder, in my opinion the runner up of that same title, will be the catalyst of the team, and push the ball towards Robin Van perse and Dirt Kuyt to provide the expected goals. Denmark hasn’t shown me much in the friendlies. They tend to surprise though, and being very sound on set pieces, I think they could score and possibly make it close. But at the end of the game, I think we will see the Dutch prevail with an attacking performance matching that of Germany. So with all that being said, Yes, I like the Dutch A lot.

What can I say about this game? Except that I think Italy is trash. I see a powerhouse struggling early, and who better then the defending champion. They will always be a team that plays defense first, they have the mentality of most serie A teams…Defend and goals will come. Well, unless they show me something totally different tomorrow, I like Paraguay. Cordozza and Santa Cruz are 2 lethal strikers who could really rattle Buffon. Cannavaro is not the same as he was in 06 and a nice give and go up the middle could get Paraguay going early. Im not expecting too much out of Paraguay but to at least score, they are just as good as Uruguay, so a similar result would be great. I see a 1-1, or 2-1 Win for Paraguay.

dont forget lucan barrios the midfielder on paraguay. this guy is unreal, and with de rossi and pirlo out for the italians this guy will have some time to work his magic in the middle and set up their two very good strikers in santa cruz and nelson valdez. while cardozza is good, not a chance he starts over valdez who was their best player all of qualifying.

Japan played very well against England a couple weeks ago in a friendly that led me to believe that they have a good foundation. They let up 2 own goals in the later parts of the second half, but either way, they still looked good. Forget the Fifa rankings, they hustle hard similar to South Korea and I think that not much separates these 2 teams. That is why I will side with the underdog and take the half goal so that I have 2 options on the match… a draw is more realistic and that is really what I see. I like Cameroon, I think they play fast and defend strong. Eto’o has been one of the best strikers in the world the past few years. The couple Cameroon friendlies I have watched did not feature Eto’o. I am curious to see how they come out against Japan. Obviously he will start, but I just don’t know how he will perform, so im not too worried about him. I also believe Cameroon will just get better as the tournament goes on, and if Japan is to pick up points they have to now.

Van der Vart needs to take a seat on the bench, Sneijder was too crowded in the middle and the result was Van der Vart getting the ball in those key spots and blowing a couple chances. I am pleased, but they should have done alot better. Elia is going to big for them this year.
