..Many will beg to differ
depends on what you consider choking. People use that term so loosely.

If you have a 6 shot lead heading to the 18th hole and you end us losing, then I would consider that choking.
If a kicker misses a 30 yard fg with no time left in the 4th and under ideal conditions and assuming the snap and hold were good, ya that would be choking.

I don't consider the Patriots choking when Eli Manning threw that pass and the TE makes a once in a lifetime catch on his head to be choking. It's a fucking team game. If all 11 guys on the field don't do their job better that the other 11 opponents, you will rarely be successful.

If you guys think Marino wasn't one of the greatest QB the NFL has ever seen, then me or anyone can never show you how wrong you are. Even I admit Brady is one of the greatest to ever played the game. Elway is also. Montana of course. Kelly, Bradshaw, Moon, Young, Griese, Staubach, Aikman, Manning and Favre also. I know I missed a couple more.

We won't count 1984, because Miami lost to the better team, San Francisco, in the Super Bowl.

In 1985, the 12-4 Dolphins were the only team to beat the Chicago Bears that year, in a memorable Monday night game.

Why didn't we get to see a rematch in the Super Bowl?? Because Miami lost in the AFC Championship on their home field 14-31 to New England.

Who was New England's QB that year? Tony Eason. A chance to get back to the Super Bowl and Marino lost to Tony Eason on his home field.

Lol. Elway lived under the yoke Marty(Schottenheimer)-ball. Come 4th qtr, Marty would unleash Elway and he'd do what he should have been doing the whole game......and I hate Denver

Would it be better to lose earlier than the superbowl?
Sun dodger was stating how important playoff stats are and regular season stats mean nothing.....I guess I agree with that..... Makes elway the worse quarterback ever because he lost the most Super Bowls cockingasnook()

Getting to the superbowl and not winning is a much better achievement than not getting there (Marino)

Never understood why people quote guys records in championship games like its a boxing record. Is Brady 4-2 in superbowls less impressive than Bradshaw 4-0 because he lost twice? Think about that for a minute.

lol

you must be joking

Miami had 6 turnovers that game including 5 fumbles which they lost 4.

Miami's running game was awful and their D couldn't stop the run.

That was the first win in Miami by NE in almost a decade.

Elway was also 5-1 in Championship games, his combined record in AFC title games and the SB was 7-4. That is respectable.

Marino was 1-3 combined.

I consider Jim Kelly to be one of the greatest QB's ever also. As do many.

Kelly lost 4 super bowls in a row (and of course what I mean is ... The Buffalo Bills lost 4 super bowls in a row) and the only guy I would say choked was Scott Norwood in the first one.

Great reply in this thread:

Marino didn't win a Superbowl because he as a quarterback was not capable of it.

Marino inherited one of the best organizations in the league, a Miami Dolphins team that won 141 games, two Superbowls, and ten other playoff games before they drafted him in 1983. In his career he won just eight playoff games (with ten losses) and finished with a career completion percentage of 59.4%. Claims Marino had no run game or defense are false - he inherited one of the best defenses and best run games in the league; his run game in yards per carry through his career exceeded all but eleven Superbowl champions; he had top-12 scoring defenses seven times and had the top scoring defense in 1983 and 1998; his 1984 Superbowl run came with a defense seventh in scoring with only 3,200 passing yards allowed and with a plus-eight turnover differential. By no standard could that squad be considered inferior, and all his playoff teams were good enough to go somewhere in the playoffs.

It was in the playoffs that Marino was completely in over his head, throwing at least two interceptions in nine of his ten playoff losses - in his one Superbowl he threw two interceptions, had a pedestrian 67 passer rating, and this against a 49ers team that was far from invincible (as the NY Giants and Minnesota Vikings would graphically prove the next few seasons).

The blunt truth is Marino was one of the worst playoff quarterbacks in history.

If you watch tapes of the '86 and '87 seasons when Elway took teams with no running game, no O-line and no defense to the SB you'd think otherwise. As soon as Elway got the kind of stacked team that Montana had almost his entire career, he won two titles.

Montana was the star of his teams.....when elway won the Super Bowl Terrell Davis was the star of the team. Elway didn't even throw for 125 yards in the super bowl.....he handed the ball to Terrell.

they were the best TEAM that year. The O line did a great job blocking for Terrell.
