GD, I believe "cheat days" are essential. Whenever I've made progress on a diet it was when I allowed for those. Your body feels deprived during a diet and kicks in extra hormones to compensate so that you are made to feel hungrier to make up for the food deprivation. An occasional cheat fools your body into thinking that you will supply it with enough calories and it doesn't have to put out hormones to compensate.

Remember, diets are a change in life, not a temporary fix. You must continue on the diet to keep weight off, not just lose it.
Couldnt agree more. And wouldnt you know it dominoe's pizza 1 topping large 7.99 all week :toast:

But yes, you have to trick the metabolism every so often to prevent it from going real slow

Heading to bed soon, but had a good day. Woke up and was a little sore, mainly from all the moving I have been doing but forced myself to take a walk. Went 22 minutes today, up from yesterday.

Also took advantage of the jacuzzi in my new complex and that felt good.

Finally looked at our fitness room and was pleasantly surprised as they had a stationary bike, treadmill, stair stepper and universal weights. Doesn't look like it gets much use but the equipment is nice. Going to take advantage of that soon as well.

Eating was right according to my plan and lots of water, save for one Diet Dr. Pepper. Trying to cut way down on the caffeine. Going to start drinking some green tea as well.

Gotta come up with my own catch phrase like "keep the continue", lol.

greendoberman, youre doin great..the fact that you posted so late, shows that your priorities have changed ...at one point, the denial STOPS workin, and our conscience STARTS workin again .(dont forget,im a black belt aa member..hehehe)..greendoberman,the hardest part of this is gettin started, please remember that...i was talkin to a cashier at a health food store recently, and she asked me what is the one thing youd tell somebody, just startin out,who was pretty much a couch potato(her words) i told her this one thing, which has worked very well, for me...i said..GO AS SLOW AS YOU CAN...she said, what? she laughed and said, ive never heard such a thing.dont you have to sweat and stuff, tolose fat??..my answer was..your body will tell you, when its ready to walk faster...dont concern yerself with how fast,or how far..focus on time, and go as slow as you possibly can(keep in mind, the person i was talkin to,was obese, and i do mean obese..a little short woman, who probably weighed 250 pounds)..i also told her that the one thing she needed to force herself to do,was to go out,EVERY day,and i mean EVERY day...if it seems like its too much,SLOW down even more,or reduce your time.....BUUT,you must go out every day,and get your body accustomed to movin around.....greendoberman,this is just my own experience...i studied exercise,on the internet, til my hognuts were blue, and it all boiled down to conditioning....after i was walkin for a while,i learned to push the envelope, just a hair...which i notice is what youre doin..goin from 20 minutes to 21 minutes..that extra minute doesnt sound like much, but it is HUUUGE...just remember,we're all in this together, and hognuts is pullin for ye..'keep the continue'

Good job and GL! i too, am on the quest of weight loss. at work we are doing the biggest loser, and i am very confident in myself. i have already lost 15 lbs and am very motivated. the winner is based on a percentage.

first off, i am not on a "diet". rather, i changed how i eat. there is a really great website called sparkpeople dot com and if you go there u can put in your height/weight and goal, they will tell you what you should be eating in terms of cal, fat, carbs, protein, etc and what i do is i put in the food i eat every day and stay within the range, exapmle is i stay at about 1500 cal a day. so if i want to take the child to the McDs playhouse i can have a chicken nuggets, i just fit it in my plan. i eat 100% healthier and on some occasions i dont have the perfect meal, i make up for it in the other meals and snacks of the day. u should eat 6 times, this includes 3 snacks. i also do step aerobics daily and cardio/wt resistance in the evenings. keeping active and diet are both needed. oh, and we started walking at work a mile during lunch break. its really great that everyone at work is doing it, it helped spark my motivation for sure. i joined a womens gym for 3 mos that is quick and easy to do, to see if i like it and will stay with it and if i win will join up for a full yr.

remember that every day that you do exercise and try to eat better is one less day that u r not exercising and eating bad.

forgot to add...at this sparkpeople place, u can look up almost any food and see what the calories, fat, carbs, etc are. u would be surprised what you intake without thinking about it. also, we have taken to eating out occasionally at subway off of the healthy area of the menu (all of which can be located in sparkpeople btw). i get a turkey 6 inch on whole wheat with lots of veggies. its only 280 cal and 4.5 gm of fat. thats very good. i could go on and on with food choices but i will stop. just look around and be aware of ALL of the different nutrional numbers u r eating (dont just count calories). i could go on and on, sorry. Yesterday I toook advantage of the fitness facilities in our complex. Instead of going for a walk I decided to use the stationary bike. I went 26 minutes, at about the most intense pace I had gone yet.

I was very tempted to go back and use the weights and do a quick circuit. However, I decided to wait as I didn't want to do too much too soon. Ironically, I got back and read Mr. Hognuts post about going slow and that reaffirmed my decision.

I ate well and drank lots of water again. Cutting back on the caffeine is difficult and I'm having one diet mountain dew a day, but eventually hope to replace that as well.

I went out yesterday to run some errands and got stuck in traffic for over an hour on the way home. It was mentally exhausting and I absolutely crashed at 7pm. I did get a good night's sleep and should be ready to go today, however.

does your complex have a swimming pool?

I have one at my house, I use it daily, it's good exercise as well.

Hopefully the exercise thing will get addicting as well. (like theRX, beer, porn, food, gambling etc. - all things I have been addicted too at points)

5team,
Pool and jacuzzi. Used the jacuzzi once, have a feeling it is going to come in handy some days. I'm not much of a swimmer at all, but may use the pool to change things up for variety sake.

Today I went back to the fitness room and tried out the universal weights.
Started with 2 sets of 12 on 9 different body parts (did crunches for abs).
Basically used no weight or the first setting and just worked on form and breathing. Want to get the muscles used to the motion and being used again.
Will likely walk tomorrow, Saturday is a cheat day and Sunday hit the weights for a "real" lifting session.
The boys called and wanted to know if I wanted to go out drinking later tonight. I politely declined.

Best day yet as I got on the treadmill and walked at a brisk pace for 28 minutes. Worked up a good sweat and definitely pushed myself. I can feel a little bit of progress on my body, even though I'm still a fat blob.

Tomorrow is cheat day and I'll get back at it Sunday.

One week so far and I am setting a good foundation and keeping disciplined.

Saturday was cheat day. No exercise, basically just sat on couch and watched games all day.
May not seem like much, but in the past this would have been a 20 beer blackout day with junk food galore. I did have some cake and a few treats, but did not get drunk and pretty much relaxed all day.
I think tomorrow I will be refreshed and more motivated to get back at it.
I found myself wanting to eat healthier, but purposely had some junk. That may not seem to make sense but I think it was the best thing for me.

Felt sluggish today, but got back to the routine doing my first "real" weight training session. Met my goals and worked the upper body pretty good. Will be doing some cardio.

It has been a week now and I am going to weigh myself in a few hours. I know I feel better, but am nervous as to whether I have lost any weight. I'll take anything a half-pound even just don't want to go in the wrong direction. I did all the right things this past week so I am hopeful that the scale won't disappoint.

Weighed in at 215, the same as last week. Disappointed in that because even the slightest drop would have shown some progress. At least I didn't gain weight.
This will just make me work harder and eat that much better. Definitely want to step on the scale next week and see it say 214 or less.

Good job GD! remember that everyday that you are doing something to help yourself is a day less that you are ruining yourself. if this was your first week and you didnt lose anything i would encourage you to check out the website i go to and track all of your calories for a few days. i was surprised what i was intaking, its amazing how the calories can add up...u have to put everything down to be accurate (a pat of butter, cup of milk, everything. id be more that happy to help if you would like) its simple, if u take in less that your required to maintain a diet (like 2000 is maintainence for example) and exercise, u will lose weight. sorry to butt in, i dont know how you feel about advise, but thought id share. GL

MrsCheater, I appreciate any advice and encouragement. I'm fairly knowledgeable on nutrition and exercise, but any info can help. I'm not worried about counting the calories as much as changing bad habits and starting new ones at this point.
