Bonus Play Sunday

It’s time to celebrate the start of will hopefully be a wonderful 2017 for everyone. Personally, I’m looking forward to ringing out the old and ringing in the new with some friends, so I’ll make this a very quick edition. Better to get this out now as I am quite sure I won’t want to later!

Back with a more on Monday. Meanwhile, here’s my Bonus Play for Sunday. It’s obviously a big football day with the NFL regular season curtain closers, but there’s an NBA game I like and feel is worth playing.

709 RAPTORS at 710 LAKERS 9:35 PM

Take: RAPTORS -8.5

I want Toronto here. The Raptors have yet to lose three straight all season, and have only two in a row only three times. So this is a team that generally rebounds off a defeat. The important add here is that Toronto will be well rested, and this team has been a monster when fresh. The Raptors are 8-1/7-2 with two or more days rest, and that’s by a double digit margin on average. So they take care of business when they need to, and the Lakers are a team they will handle if they’re focused. Not a cheap price, but I’m willing to lay it with the Raptors.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Jim Feist's Comp Pick, Sunday, January 1, 2017

Your free pick for Sunday, January 1, 2017 comes in the NBA battle between the Toronto Raptors and the Lakers in Los Angeles. Toronto has plenty of offensive punch and likes to run, on an 18-8 run over the total. The Over is 21-7-1 when the Raptors face the Western Conference. LA doesn't play any defense and the Over is 10-4 in the Lakers last 14 home games.

Play Toronto/LA Lakers Over the total.

Cowboys vs Eagles

Jack's Free Pick Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles -5.5

The Dallas Cowboys literally have nothing to play for this week. They wanted to stay sharp last week against the Lions, so they didn't rest their starters. But the reports are that they will rest their starters this week and give their backups the majority of the playing time. That's why we've seen this line move to the Eagles as 5.5-point favorites, and I don't think it's enough.

I like the fact that the Eagles haven't quit. Each of their last three games against the Redskins, Ravens and Giants have all gone right down to the wire, and they easily could have won all three. That's even more impressive when you consider that those three teams were all playing hard to try and make the playoffs, while the Eagles were simply playing for pride.

Now the Eagles are going to want revenge from an overtime loss in Dallas in their first meeting this season. They actually led that game by double-digits in the second half before losing in overtime. And getting them at home this time around should make all the difference.

The Eagles have been a great bet at home this season, going 5-2 SU & 5-2 ATS while outscoring opponents by an average of 8.0 points per game. They have even handled playoff-bound teams like the Steelers, Falcons and Giants in three of their victories, and they were the team that handed the Vikings their first loss following their 5-0 start. Their defense has been especially good at home, giving up just 15.9 points per game on the season.

The Cowboys have a plethora of injuries on defense. That is where guys are going to be rested the most. You know rookie QB Carson Wentz wants to finish the season the way he started it, which was red hot. And I think he'll have the opportunity to do just that by having one of his best games of the season. Even a healthy Dallas defense has given up 67.5% completions and 263 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks this season. Now they will be even worse off with backups getting most the playing time.

Philadelphia is 7-0 ATS off two or more consecutive overs over the last two seasons. Dallas is 7-18 ATS in its last 25 road games during the last two weeks of the regular season. And the Cowboys are on a short week here after playing on Monday, adding to the reasons to fade them. They are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game. Bet the Eagles Sunday.

Seahawks vs 49ers

5* NFL Free Pick Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have already claimed the NFC West title, but they can still earn a pass on wild-card weekend with a victory here against the Niners and a loss or tie for the Falcons against the Saints. They're coming off a 34-31 loss to Arizona, but are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a ATS loss and 7-2 ATS in their last nine games after scoring more than 30 points in their previous game.

The San Francisco 49ers picked up their second win of the season (both against the Rams) with a 22-21 road victory at LA last week. The bad news is that they lost running back Carlos Hyde who tore his MCL in the victory, and this is a team that match up really poorly with Seattle who is 9-1-1 ATS in the last 11 head-to-head meetings.

Bills vs Jets

Free Pick on Jets +

As bad as New York looked last week, I think the value is with them as a home dog. It’s clearly not been the season the Jets were hoping for, but I expect them to play with a lot of pride in their home finale. They certainly don’t want to go into the offseason with another loss like they had last week against the Pats.

The bigger factor here is I just don’t trust this Bills team to show up. Not only did they fire their head coach and defensive coordinator with one week left. A move some thought came a bit too soon, given it was only Ryan’s second year on the job. They also stated that starting QB Tyrod Taylor won’t play. Not because he’s not healthy, but because they don’t want to risk paying his $30 million guarantee for next year if he were to suffer a serious injury.

I completely understand the move from a business perspective. However, I don’t think it’s one that is going to sit well with the rest of the players in the locker room. Don’t be surprised if the Bills have a long list of guys who sit this one out with a nagging injury. At the same time, I can't see those that do play being all that motivated to put forth a max effort.

It’s one of those games where you have to look at the motivation more than the statistics. The numbers here are going to be in favor of Buffalo. With that said, not having Taylor at QB is a big loss for the Bills. E.J. Manuel doesn’t pose near the threat on the ground and is no where close in terms of his passing ability. The Jets should be able to load the box and force Manuel to beat them with his arm. My guess is he won’t be up to the task. Take New York!

Saints vs Falcons

Bonus Play New Orleans Saints

I'm taking the points with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Atlanta has won the NFC South and they do have a chance to clinch a first round bye. But we believe they're a tad overvalued in this one. Drew Brees takes a back seat to no one, including Matt Ryan. His team is just 7-8 SU this season, but six of the losses came by one score and four losses came by a grand total of just nine points. That's how close the Saints are to being 11-4 and thinking about the postseason. Atlanta heads into this one just 4-3 SU at home this season with three of the wins coming against Arizona, Carolina, and San Francisco. The Falcons won the first meeting 45-32, but the score was a tad misleading, helped by a 90-yard pick-6 and a Saints' muffed punt inside their own 15-yard line, leading to another Falcon TD. We believe this one will be very close with the Saints hanging the number. I'm taking the points with the Saints on Sunday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Bills vs Jets

Play - New York Jets

Edges - Jets: Head coach Todd Bowles 5-1-1 ATS as a division underdog. Bills: 3-18 ATS with revenge following the Dolphins; and 1-8 SU and 2-7 ATS away in season finales. With the Bills starting QB EJ Manuel, and head coach Rex Ryan having received his walking papers, we recommend a 1* play on the Jets. Thank you and good luck as always.
