BRYAN LEONARD'S POINSETTIA BOWL MONEY MAKER (Wednesday)

Matchup: California vs Utah
Pick: UTAH +3.5 (-110)

The Mountain West continues to be shortchanged in the public eye as the Utes have been installed as the underdog here. Despite the fact that they have won seven straight bowl games including three straight in the underdog role. We all well remember their dominance of Alabama this time last year, the same Tide team playing in this year's national championship game. Utah is traditionally a fantastic underdog cashing 18 of their last 23 in that role. They are 6-1 ATS catching points all-time in bowl action. Utah owns the better defense in this one as they have held nine of twelve opponents to 17 points or less. They should have solid defensive success considering Cal's offensive coordinator was at Utah the past four seasons. The Utes are very familiar with Andy Ludwig's attack and they have plenty of time to prepare. Utah also has a solid edge in the kicking game as the Utes always seem to find one of the country's best place kickers, Joe Phillips is 17 of 19 on the season.

California will be without their best offensive player as Javid Best remains out with an injury. The Cal offense really struggled this season in his absence. The quarterback situation which is normally a Bear's strength has been pedestrian at best. California struggled down the stretch and we really can't see this team being overly excited for this match-up. After all this was expected to be the season that California won the PAC 10 Conference.

Utah and the entire Mountain West Conference have an extra chip on their shoulders this time of year. They are not considered a BCS Conference despite being every bit as good as their western rival PAC 10 opponents. Utah is well coached, has the motivational edge and owns the better defense, a great underdog combination.

Complimentary Picks and Analysis
Game: Columbus at Dallas (8:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: Columbus +130 (moneyline)
What happened to the Blue Jackets? They were sailing along and now have had just two of their last 15 end on the right side. Those numbers could be so different if not for the fact they have five shootout losses in the stretch, so it's not as bad as it appears. Dallas hasn't been pretty lately either as they have allowed 47 goals in their last 13 games, or 3.6 per contest. There is certainly room for Columbus to find a way to get healthy here as they are 5-1 in their last six vs. a team with a losing home record. The Stars aren't shinning in the home-favorite role from -110 to -150, at just 3-9 in their last 12. There is added value by the Jackets' success in Dallas winning five of the last seven. I'll go with Columbus here.

20 Dime - Utah

Nice match up here at the Poinsettia Bowl. The two teams have combined for 12 consecutive bowl wins. We also know how seriously Utah takes bowl games after their demolition of Alabama last year in a BSC Sugar Bowl match up. It was Utah's 8th straight bowl win Cal doesn't lose bowl games either so this should be a good match up. The two QB's are good as well with Cal's Kevin Riley showing more inconsistency than his counterpart Jordan Wynn, who will also be playing in front of his hometown fans as he was a two time State champion from San Diego. Utah will be without it's best offensive player Jahvid Best who never returned from one of the more scarier head injuries in recent memory. But Cal is always deep at RB so that will not hurt them too bad but Best is worth at least a point and a half on offense and a point on STs. Utah is as balanced as they get however boasting a 1000 yard rusher and a 1000 yard receiver. The Utes are always quick and they always come to play. The Utes own the nations 6th best pass defense as well, and they hold their opposition QB to a mere 50% completion percentage. They have three losses on the season and they were to #4 TCU, #7 ORE. and # 14 BYU. Now also don't forget that we have a common opponent between these two teams. Utah lost to Oregon by 7, while Oregon defeated Cal by 39!!! Utah also held Jeremiah Masoli of Oregon to 25% completion and less than 100 yards in their meeting earlier in the year. The PAC 10 is definitely a little on the down side this year as well. Under dogs have been doing very well recently in bowl games so until we see a definite reversal of this trend we will continue to ride the train, especially with some good teams in that role.
