TUESDAY'S ACTION

15 Dime college fooaball release on SOUTHERN MISS plus the points vs. Louisville in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl from St. Petersburg, Fla. Southern Miss is catcheing 2 ½ points both here in Vegas and offshore. As always, monitor the line movements in this game and if you start to see the line reach the key number of 3, grab it immddiately.

Southern Miss

This game originally opened up with Southern Miss as a 2½-point favorite and now the number has shifted 180 degrees in the other direction, and frankly I don’t agree with the move at all. Sure, after three straight dreadful, non-bowl seasons under coach Steve Kragthorpe, Louisville took a step in the right direction under first-year coach Charlie Strong, going 6-6 and returning to the postseason. But who did the Cardinals really beat? Eastern Kentucky, Arkansas State, Memphis, UConn, Syracuse and Rutgers. Only one of those was a quality win (26-0 over UConn), but that game was in Louisville and played at a when the Huskies were really struggling (they went on to win the Big East title).

Against the six toughest opponents they faced – Kentucky, Oregon State, Cincinnati, Pitt, South Florida and West Virginia – Louisville went 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS, with the offense averaging just 17.5 points per contest (scoring 16, 10 and 3 in three of the contests). Well, if the Cardinals are going to win this game tonight, they’re probably going to have to double that average scoring output, because Southern Miss WILL put up points.

The Golden Eagles averaged more than 37 points and 460 yards per game this season, and it was a balanced attack that was prolific on the ground (206 rushing ypg) and through the air (255 passing ypg). Throw out Southern Miss’s “aberration” game (a 13-12 win at Louisiana Tech) and the team put up the following point totals in its final nine games: 31, 41, 43, 41, 49, 46, 31, 59 and 50!

After getting spanked 41-13 at South Carolina – which proved to be very good this year – to open the season, the Eagles closed on an 8-3 run. The three losses: 44-43 to East Carolina, 50-49 to UAB in overtime, 56-50 at Tulsa in the regular-season finale. That’s right: Southern Miss is eight points away from being on a 10-game winning streak!

The Golden Eagles have the experience edge, too. While Louisville missed out on a bowl game each of the last three years (and is 2-6 ATS in its last eight bowls), Southern Miss is in the postseason for the ninth straight year and 13th in the last 14. And although they stumbled in the New Orleans Bowl last year (42-32 loss to Middle Tennessee), they had won four of their previous five bowls.

The Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last four versus winning teams, while Southern Miss is 3-1-1 ATS in its last five as a bowl underdog, and the Golden Eagles (who failed to cover as a three-point underdog in the six-point loss to Tulsa in the regular season finale) haven’t had back-to-back non-covers all season (4-0 ATS last four after an ATS setback).

Wrong team’s favored here. Take the points.
