Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-130, 5.5)

The Pittsburgh Penguins can’t seem to catch a break. After starting the season with an 8-1-0 record, the defending Stanley Cup champions are on a 4-4-0 slide since losing defenseman Sergei Gonchar on Oct. 20.

The Pens could be without five players who totaled 43 percent of their playoff goals last year for Tuesday’s contest against the Bruins. The most recent setback occurred during Saturday’s 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks when defenseman Kris Letang suffered an undisclosed injury.

Pittsburgh was outshot 96-77 during its three-game trip through California and committed 33 giveaways.

“Injuries or not, we’ve got to compete, and we’re not doing that – we’ve been outworked,” center Michael Rupp told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Make no mistake, those guys are great hockey players and important parts of this team – but we’ve still got a pretty good group of guys.”

Boston isn’t doing so well either. The B’s are 1-3 over their last four games and they’ve played below the total in each of their last six games.

Pick: Under

Edmonton Oilers at Ottawa Senators (NA)

The Ottawa Senators are also going through frustrating times. They’ve dropped five of their last seven games and find themselves out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference standings.

Ottawa has to be worried about the way its offseason acquisitions are performing. Johnathan Cheechoo has only two assists while Alex Kovalev has racked up just six points.

But the Senators’ biggest problem is the discrepancy between the amount of power plays they are getting (51) and the number of penalties they are taking (67). Two of their three penalties against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday took place in the offensive zone.

“We’ve got to find a way to stay out of the box, that’s all. Period,” head coach Cory Clouston told the Ottawa Sun. “Whatever it may be. Whether we feel we’re getting the short end of the stick… we’ve got to find a way to stay out of the box.”

The Edmonton Oilers scored four power-play goals Sunday night on their way to a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Expect their man advantage to have a similar performance tonight against the Senators.

Pick: Oilers

The Bulls are 1-6 ATS their last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning road record and they are 0-6 ATS their last 6 games as home favorites. 10* MAC GAME OF THE MONTH PLAY ON #101 OHIO U.

Tuesday's Selection ...
Note:
Don't think I could have broken down that game any better for you.

Big Ben or Kyle Orton? Simple as that.

Bottom line folks is you don't have 2 weeks to prepare for someone, 2 weeks to gameplan, 2 weeks to be 100% ready only to go to Baltimore and look like you never ran a play in your life.

Did you really think Denver was going to execute for 60 minutes against the Steelers defense if they couldn't score more than 7 points against the Ravens?

Like I said, you give me the Steelers laying a 3 number against anybody on the planet with a week to prepare and I will jump all over it.

In a really good rhythm right now going 3-0 Saturday, 2-0 Sunday and 1-0 Monday. I've gone 7-1-1 last 9 weekly college football releases last 3 weeks Tuesday thru Friday.

Just have to keep it going. Keep building off the winning week last week. The +100 dimes the last 3 days.

I am very aware of how much work stills needs to be done and I am taking on that challenge head on.

10 DIME - BUFFALO BULLS - There will be no quit in Turner Gill's squad tonight.

First of all, this line is coming down as people are starting to jump on Ohio in this football game. Jump all you want.

From the outside it looks like Ohio has everything to play for at 6-3, and competing for the MAC East title and a date in the MAC championship game, and has had 10 days to get ready for this game but there is a game they just played that concerns me in this spot here.

3 weeks ago ago at home to Kent State, the Bobcats lost 20-11 mustering up 164 yards total offense against the 56th ranked defense in the country. I'm talking 11 points and 164 total yards here folks.

Now you are facing a defense in Buffalo ranked 55th but this time you are on the road.

Here are other concerns for me in trying to make a case for Ohio in this game.

Against a schedule that features just 2 BCS opponents in UConn and Tennessee with the rest being MAC opponents and Cal Poly, Ohio's offense comes in ranked 93rd running the football, 90th passing all adding up to the 105th total offense out of 120 teams.

Conversely, Buffalo has played Pittsburgh, UTEP, UCF, and the two best teams in the MAC in Temple and Central Michigan, and through a much tougher schedule have managed the 50th best running attack, 35th passing for the 35th best offensive team in the country.

Yes, defensively Ohio is ranked 37th overall to the Bulls 55 but again, in my opinion, Buffalo has played a much tougher schedule. Simple as that.

I am impressed with Ohio's performance at Tennessee but to lay the kind of egg they laid at home to Kent State has me a bit concerned here.

Let's not lose sight of one thing here. Buffalo was one 3rd down conversion away from beating Bowling Green, and they are also one or two plays away from being 7-2. This is fantasitic value with the Bulls tonight.

They have beaten Ohio by double digits the last 2 years, and like I said at the top, there will be no quit in Turner Gill's team tonight. They are on national TV for the 2nd straight week and from a recruiting standpoint, they will take this game as serioius as any game this year.

Finally, it's not out of the question for Buffalo to finish 6-6 and still get a bowl game and I truly believe that will be Gill's mantra besides the fact he will not want to lose back to back home games in the MAC.

I am going against the public line move, with the home team, with the better offense, against a team they have manhandled the last 2 years to win this game and keep their slim bowl hopes alive.

10 dime BUFFALO

Tuesday College football totals play-GC

Sport: College Football
Game: Ohio at Buffalo
Date/Time: 11/10/2009 7:00PM EST
Pick: OVER THE TOTAL
Reason: On Tuesday night the Bonus Play is on the over in the Ohio at Buffalo game. Rotation numbers 101/102 at 7:00 eastern. Both teams have played mostly overs in this line range the last few years. Ohio has gone over 11 of 13 times from +3 to -3. Buffalo has gone over 9 of 11 times from -3 to +3. Both teams have capable offenses and struggling defenses. Look for high scoring game here tonight. Those looking for some thing to hit hard on Tuesday. I have the NBA UNDERDOG GAME OF THE MONTH. Backed by a 16-2 system that has seen the dog win straight up 15 of the 18 times. This one gets it done.As an added bonus you will recieve a 43-13 bonus NBA system play.Take the over 45 tonight. MREAST NBA TUESDAY BIG TICKET

#507 PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS @ #508 MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES 8:00PM EST
PLAY ON #507 PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS -5 -110 FOR 4 UNITS

The Memphis Grizzlies will be without Allen Iverson as he takes a personal leave, and the word is Iverson is contemplating retirement. The Grizzlies have a bunch of good young players, but the bench has been ineffective as the team depth is a big question mark, and now have to replace 31 minutes a night from Iverson. The Grizzlies big 4 are getting 36+ minutes a night. What is happening is the fast paced no defense approach works well for awhile, but the Grizzlies have been outscored by a minimum of 8 points in the second half in each of their last 5 games. Portland can score, and play defense, and last year finished the season 9-4 ATS in their last 13 as a road favorite, and are already 1-0 this year. I like Portland in this one.

Game: Houston at Dallas (8:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: Dallas -6.5 (-110)

<!--p-->
The Houston Rockets have made the best of life without Yao and Tracy McGrady. Sooner or later playing on the road against the good teams will take its toll. The Mavericks certainly have developed a huge home-court advantage as they are now 27-4 straight up in their last 31 home games. Two of the losses were to New Orleans, so this is certainly no easy task for the Rockets, who lost both games here a year ago by double-digits. On the road against the good teams has not been kind to the Rockets where they stand at just 4-9 ATS in their last 13 going back to last year. Dallas is playing lethal with two day’s rest and has now gone 41-20-1 ATS in their last 62 with two days off. The Rockets are just 4-11 ATS in the last 15 meetings, so I'm going with Dallas here.

4 DIME PLAY

Vancouver @ St. Louis

8:00pm Tonight

4 Dime Play Take Vancouver ML +100
After studying tonight's game, I just can't find a reason for Vancouver to be the underdog here. They lost their last game, but have bounced back the past 4 times they lost and got a win. They do have a couple players doubtful tonight and one being their starting goaltender. The thing is their backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft has been lights out this season with a 4-1 record in his starts, with a 1.61 GAA. Another thing I like is the fact that Vancouver has went over every game coming off 3+ days rest, while St. Louis has gone 0-4 under on their amount of days off. Which means to me that Vancouver will put up points, while St. Louis may strugle. And I am not just saying that, the three games Vancouver went over off 3+ days rest, they scored 3,4, and 3 goals. While St. Louis on their amount of days off have scored 1,0,5, and 1 goals. Roll with the underdog here.

Trends I Like

Canucks are 8-1 in their last 9 Tuesday games.
Canucks are 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game.
Canucks are 9-3 in their last 12 vs. a team with a losing record.
Canucks are 5-2 in their last 7 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Canucks are 7-3 in their last 10 overall.
Blues are 0-4 in their last 4 games as a home favorite.
Blues are 0-4 in their last 4 home games.
Blues are 0-4 in their last 4 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game.
Blues are 0-4 in their last 4 games as a favorite.
Blues are 0-5 in their last 5 overall.
