Thursday's Play
5 Dime - Philadelphia Phillies
Philadelphia not only extended its overall winning streak to six in a row with a methodical three-game sweep of San Diego at Petco Park in which it outscored the Padres 20-9, it also improved its major league-best road record to 19-6, including 11 wins its its last 13 on the highway.
Los Angeles on the other hand improved its home record to a major league-best 20-6 with last night's 1-0 win over Arizona, improving to 22-10 in its last 32 games overall. The Dodgers, who took two-of-three in Philadelphia last month, will be hosting the Phillies for the first time since losing Game 5 of the NLCS last year. And as in that contest, tonight they'll be facing Southern California native Cole Hamels once more.
Hamels didn't get the win in Game 5 last year en route to taking MVP honors of the NLCS, but he allowed just one run and five hits in seven innings. He also didn't get a decision in a May 14 extra-inning home loss in which he allowed one earned run and struck out nine in seven innings of work. The righthander is 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA in five career starts against LA, regular and postseason combined.
Clayton Kershaw has pitched well for the Dodgers at home this year, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA. Those numbers are far better than his 2-3 mark and 6.75 ERA on the road. Among those losses was a May 12 setback at Philadelphia in which he allowed four runs and walked four in five innings of work. The young lefthander is 0-2 with a 7.41 ERA in three regular season starts and two playoff relief outings against the Phillies, who are 13-4 versus southpaws this season.
The Los Angeles offense has scuffled of late, scoring two runs or less in five of its last seven games. With the Phillies scoring 38 runs during their current six-game winning streak and Raul Ibanez and Ryan Howard both hot anchoring the middle of the lineup, this near pick-em price is too good to pass up considering Philadelphia is on a 5-1 run with Hamels on the hill.
