Showing Their Stripes
With five-straight wins, the Detroit Tigers are the hottest team in baseball at the moment. Even more impressive, they’ve done so on the road and have provided value for bettors. They swept Baltimore with closing odds of +102, -108 and -119 and have won their first two at Fenway agains the Boston Red Sox with closing odds of -102 and +126. They’ll look to complete the sweep as +106 road dogs with Anibal Sanchez on the mound Sunday.
Pitching Notes
* Rays ace David Price is coming off his best outing of the season to face the Los Angeles Angels Sunday. Price tossed a complete game gem in a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on May 13, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out 12. The Rays are currently -125 road faves at the Halos Sunday.
* The Over is 4-0 in Chicago Cubs’ starter Travis Wood’s last four starts overall. The Cubs lefty has allowed 17 earned runs over 22 2/3 innings of word over those previous four starts – the first of which was versus the Milwaukee Brewers, who he goes against Sunday. Wood allowed five earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in that start. The Cubs are +117 home dogs with a total of 9 Sunday.
Batting Notes
* Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki has battered San Diego Padres pitching this season, to the tune of a .400 average, which mirrorrs his season average. Tulowitzki is 8-for-20 on the season, including going 3-for-4 at the dish in Saturday’s 8-5 loss to the Friars.
Totals Streak
Oakland A’s (7-2-1 O/U): The Athletics have been running roughshod over the rest of the league, reeling off victories in eight of their last nine games while averaging better than 6.5 runs per game over that stretch. The A’s are tops in the American League with 222 runs scored on the season.
Injury Notes
* Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder is not in the lineup versus the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday. Fielder is receiving treatment for a herniated disc in his neck and could be out for a few more games early in the week.
* Earlier Sunday, the Chicago White Sox placed 1B Jose Abreu on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his left ankle. Abreu leads the majors with 15 homers and 42 RBIs.
Weather Watch
* Wind will be blowing in from right field at 15 mph at Rangers Ballpark for the meeting between the Jays and Rangers. The Over/Under mark is 11-14 at Rangers Ballpark when wind blows in from right. Sunday’s total is currently 9.
Umpire Note of the Day
The Under is 6-1 in Scott Barry’s last seven games when he is tasked with calling balls and strikes. Barry will be behind home plate as the Red Sox host the Tigers Sunday evening.
