NBA

Sunday, April 20

Mavericks are trying beat Spurs best-of-7, team they've lost to last nine in a row (2-7 vs spread). Dallas won five of last seven games, is 27-14 vs spread on road this year- they won NBA title in 2011, but haven't won playoff series since. San Antonio has veteran nucleus that has four rings; last of which was in 2007; they're 14-3 last 17 first round series. Spurs were just 3-4 in their last seven games, as they readied for this-- Dallas lost its last seven visits to Alamo.

Are Bobcats just happy to be in playoffs, or will they compete against Miami team thats beaten them 15 times in row (Heat covered eight of last ten in series)? This is Charlotte's second winning season out of 10 in NBA- they got swept 4-0 by Orlando in only other appearance (2010). Bobcats are 23-16-2 vs spread on road; five of their last seven games stayed under total. Miami coasted to 11-14 finish in last 25 games; only two teams have won NBA title after being under .500 in last 25 games- '95 Rockets were last team to do that.

Washington is in playoffs for first time since '08; their last series win was in '05, but with John Wall playing 82 games, they're good. Wizards won two of three vs Chicago this season, is 5-3 in last eight meetings, as 13 of last 16 series games stayed under total. Chicago is in playoffs for 9th time in last 10 years; they're 3-5 in last eight first round series. Noah is playing with heavy heart after his mentor/second dad passed away this week. Wizards are 26-15 vs spread on road this season; they split last four visits to United Center.

Portland missed playoffs last two years, lost last six first round series; last time they won playoff series was 2000. Blazers won nine of last ten games; they're 25-16 vs spread on road this season; Portland lost five of last six games with Rockets-- last seven tilts in series went over total. Portland lost its last three visits to Houston by 15-13-5 points. Rockets are 1-7 in first round series since losing finals in '97- they're 22-17-1 vs spread at home this season. This is only second time Houston has been in playoffs in last five years, so pair of hungry franchises in this series.

Sunday, April 20

Home side won all five Ranger-Flyer games this season; Philly lost last nine visits to MSG. Rangers won five of last six home games; they scored twice in 0:47 span of third period in Gamne 1, when they were 2-6 on power play, Flyers just 0-1. Under is 5-0-2 in New York's last seven games. Flyers lost three of last four and eight of last 12 games- they were outshot 13-1 in third period of Game 1, 36-15 for game. Over is 6-0-1 in Philly's last seven games.

Detroit is 23-19 on road this season after 1-0 win in Game 1, when they scored with 3:01 to play, in game with only three penalties, 44 faceoffs (average thru Friday's games was 72.0); they've won four of five with Boston this season, winning last four games after Bruins won first meeting 4-1. Top-seed Boston is 31-11 at home- they lost six of their last eight games. Obviously, pressure on Bruins to win and avoid going to Motor City down 2-0.

Montreal won first two series games in St Pete, despite going 0-6 on power play and being -10 on faceoffs; they scored nine goals in first two games, after Lightning had given up four in winning last four regular season games. Montreal won nine of last twelve games overall; they've won five of last seven at home, are 26-15 at home this season. Tampa Bay gave up pair of third period goals in each game so far, but they've won four of last six road games.

San Jose is 31-11 at home this season, but they split six games with Los Angeles this year; Kings lost 11 of last 12 visits to this building. Sharks won four of last five home games- they coasted in Game 1, taking 5-0 lead into third period. Kings lost five of last six games, scoring total of 14 goals- they've lost four of last five away games. Five of LA's last seven games went over the total. League-wide, over is 9-2-2 in playoff games so far this week.

STATSYSTEMS SPORTS NL PITCHING REPORT
SUNDAY, APRIL 20th 2014
INFORMATION WORTH BETTING ON EACH DAY
_______________________________________

#901 ATLANTA @ #902 NY METS - 1:10 PM
•Braves RH David Hale (0-0, 2.89 ERA, WHIP: 1.822) - Hale impressed with five shutout innings against Washington in his first start, but produced a shaky 4 1/3 innings in his fourth career outing April 10 against the Mets, surrendering three earned runs on five hits with five walks. The right-hander’s scheduled start Tuesday at Philadelphia was rained out and the Braves elected to skip his turn in the rotation. Hale’s time in the Atlanta rotation could be nearing an end as Mike Minor continues rehabbing in the minor leagues.

•Mets RH Zack Wheeler (1-2, 4.67 ERA, WHIP: 1.500) - Wheeler, who grew up in the Atlanta suburbs and made his major-league debut in Atlanta last summer, allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings in an April 9 loss to the Braves. The 23-year-old rebounded in his last outing Monday at Arizona, holding the Diamondbacks to two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Wheeler has made four of his 20 career starts against the Braves, going 3-1 with a 3.80 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings.

#903 ST LOUIS @ #904 WASHINGTON - 1:35 PM
•Cardinals RH Shelby Miller (1-2, 4.67 ERA, WHIP: 1.443) - After collecting victories in each of last three decisions in 2013, Miller secured his first win in three tries this season with six strong innings during Tuesday’s 6-1 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers. The 23-year-old Texas native allowed season lows in runs (one) and hits (three) while striking out a season-high seven, but has surrendered at least one homer in each turn. Miller made his only two career starts versus the Nationals last season, going 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA.

•Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (1-2, 6.00 ERA, WHIP: 1.571) - Strasburg followed up his best outing of the season versus Miami on April 10 with his worst against the Marlins in Tuesday’s 11-2 setback. The 2012 All-Star gave up six runs for only the fifth time in his career on eight hits and three walks in four frames. Strasburg, who has yielded 14 earned runs on 24 hits in 21 innings, is still in search of his first victory entering his third career start versus the Cardinals despite a 2.08 ERA after taking the loss in his only turn against them last year.

#905 MILWAUKEE @ #906 PITTSBURGH - 1:35 PM
•Brewers RH Marco Estrada (1-1, 3.06 ERA, WHIP: 1.132) - Estrada is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA in 11 career appearances - eight starts - against Pittsburgh and has held the Pirates to a .182 average over the years. He was outstanding on the road in 2013, going 5-2 with a 2.09 ERA in contrast to his home numbers (2-2, 6.62). The Brewers have won both of Estrada's road starts this season, although his last appearance was a 6-1 home defeat to St. Louis in which he yielded three runs over six innings.

•Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (2-1, 4.74 ERA, WHIP: 1.421) - Cole has allowed more runs in each of his three starts this season, capped by a five-run effort over six innings of Tuesday's loss to the Reds. The 23-year-old had won six straight regular-season starts dating to last year and had not absorbed a defeat since Milwaukee topped Pittsburgh 4-0 back on Aug. 29. The current Brewers players own a collective .333 lifetime average against Cole, who is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee.

#907 CINCINNATI @ #908 CHICAGO CUBS - 2:20 PM
•Reds RH Homer Bailey (0-1, 8.16 ERA, WHIP: 2.024) - Bailey has hardly lived up to the hefty contract extension he signed in the offseason, failing to pitch past the fifth inning in any of his first three starts. His last outing was puzzling, as he racked up nine strikeouts but also surrendered four home runs while taking a no-decision against Pittsburgh. Bailey is 7-2 with a 4.48 ERA in 13 starts against the Cubs, including a 4-1 mark and a 2.95 ERA in six outings at Wrigley Field.

•Cubs RH Carlos Villanueva (1-3, 11.57 ERA, WHIP: 2.151) - Villanueva's transition to the rotation took a nasty turn in his last outing, as he was tagged for nine runs and 10 hits over three-plus innings in a loss at St. Louis. The 30-year-old is 2-3 with a 4.12 ERA in 25 games (seven starts) against Cincinnati, and he hasn't beaten the Reds since earning a win in relief in 2010. Villanueva is pitching at home for only the second time this season — he beat Philadelphia with five innings of one-run ball in his first start at Wrigley.

#909 PHILADELPHIA @ #910 COLORADO - 4:10 PM
•Phillies RH Roberto Hernandez (1-0, 3.86 ERA, WHIP: 1.347) - Hernandez allowed two runs, four hits and six walks in six innings and wasn't around for the decision when Philadelphia lost to Atlanta 9-6 on Monday. The 33-year-old Dominican Republic native has 17 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings this season, with the nine he recorded against Milwaukee on April 9 his most since 2007. Hernandez, who is 60-82 with a 4.66 ERA in a career that started in 2006 with Cleveland, won his first start in a Phillies uniform 7-2 over the Cubs in Chicago on April 4.

•Rockies RH Juan Nicasio (2-0, 3.50 ERA, WHIP: 1.222) - With Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) some two weeks away from joining the rotation and Brett Anderson out with a broken finger, Colorado desperately needs Nicasio to continue his solid start. The 27-year-old Dominican Republic native threw 31 of his 99 pitches and gave up both runs in the first inning before settling down and yielding only two hits in his final five frames of the Rockies' 3-2 victory at San Diego on Tuesday. Nicasio earned no-decisions in both career starts against the Phillies.

#911 ARIZONA @ #912 LA DODGERS - 4:10 PM
•Diamondbacks RH Josh Collmenter (0-1, 3.75 ERA, WHIP: 1.417) - Collmenter moved into the starting rotation Monday against the New York Mets and allowed three runs and five hits in four innings, good enough to get another shot against the Dodgers. Collmenter has a lot of experience against Los Angeles without much success, making 12 appearances, including four starts, and posting a 3-5 record and 5.06 ERA. He came out of the bullpen last month and pitched to seven Dodgers during their season-opening doubleheader in Australia, allowing three hits and two walks in the 7-5 loss.

•Dodgers RH Josh Beckett (0-0, 4.00 ERA, WHIP: 1.444) - Beckett will try to build off his last start, when he threw five scoreless innings and allowed two hits and five walks in a 12-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants. Beckett made two quality starts against Arizona in his injury-shortened 2013 season, allowing one run and six hits in 8 1/3 innings last April, but losing 1-0 on a walk-off single by Goldschmidt in the ninth.
