Howie Hoops: Cash in with 'Cats
By HOWARD KUSSOY
Historically, there may be no better match up than North Carolina and Kentucky. They have won more games than any teams in NCAA Tournament history and rank second and third all-time in championships. But, even without the names on the front of the jerseys, today's game holds massive intrigue.
The two teams met in Chapel Hill on Dec. 4, with the Tar Heels pulling out a 75-73 win, but with the young squads looking nothing like they've become, there is little to take from that game. North Carolina's size, normally a huge boon, shouldn't cause many problems for Kentucky, who has senior center Josh Harrellson to protect the paint. Stopping Harrison Barnes will be an issue for the Wildcats, but it is for everyone.
In as close a matchup as the tournament has seen, North Carolina's tendency for erratic play, specifically against top-level teams, can't be overlooked. Plus, having a closer like Brandon Knight alleviates any late-game concerns. In this tight affair, he could be needed again. Take the Wildcats (-1).
In the early game, look for VCU (+11) to carry the chip on their shoulder to one more win -- for us. The scoreboard will be another story.
Record: 17-7-1
Last night: Florida (-3), UConn (-3).
