Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets

Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

When it rains it pours in the Motor City.

The Detroit Pistons, who were dealing with injuries to starters Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, are now without newly acquired shooting guard Ben Gordon, who missed Friday night's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers with a sprained ankle.

Those injuries have left the Pistons to rely on their untested talents. Rookies Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko moved into the starting lineup alongside third-year point guard Rodney Stuckey. Off the bench, Detroit went to three-year pro Will Bynum, who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Friday's loss.

"We have a lot of guys who can play multiple positions,"Stuckey told reporters. "(Gordon) is a scorer and we are going to miss him. He is going to be back soon, though. This is an opportunity for our young guys to come in and play."

Gordon is doubtful heading into Sunday's game with Atlanta. The Hawks are coming off a win over the Philadelphia 76ers and have been victorious in eight of their last 10 games. Atlanta has won and covered each of its last three meeting with Detroit.

Pick: Atlanta

Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 194)

Houston turned some heads at the start of the schedule, despite missing Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The team maintained its scoring punch thanks to role players like Aaron Brooks, who is averaging 16 points per game.

However, in recent games, the Rockets' spark plug has struggled and the team has suffered because of it. Brooks has had scoring performances of nine, eight and 12 points in the past three contests, leading Houston to 2-1 record in which it failed to cover in each game.

Brooks was 5-for-16 from the field in the Rockets' most recent outing, a 92-84 loss to the San Antonio Spurs Friday. The former Oregon Ducks was just 1-for-4 from beyond the arc and got to the foul line only once on a three-point play late in the game.

Brooks could have a hard time getting loose against a talented and energetic Thunder backcourt. Oklahoma City ranks seventh in team steals with pickpockets on the perimeter in Thabo Sefolosha, Kevin Durant, Russel Westbrook and rookie James Harden.

Pick: Oklahoma City

Information on the best of Sundays college hoop games........

Arkansas lost to E. Tennessee St last game; they're 2-3, allowing 85.4 ppg- they allowed 94+ points in all three losses. Hogs' only wins are vs Appalachian State, Alcorn State. SEC home favorites are 15-10. South Alabama is Pelphrey's old team, they're 5-2, losing to Tulsa and Rice.

California is banged up early in season; they're 3-2, with wins by 5-34-32 points- they lost to Ohio State/Syracuse in NYC. Pac-10 favorites are 8-14, 5-12 at home. Princeton is 2-2, losing by 4 to Army, to George Washington by 15. Ivy League road underdogs are 7-9 against spread.

USC was upset at home 67-59 by LMU but won its other two games, by 10-34 points; Trojans lost three starters and coach from 22-13 team (9-9 in Pac-10). Nebraska is 3-1, losing by 14 at Saint Louis, winning by 13 vs TCU and beating two stiffs. Big 12 road dogs are 4-2 vs spread.

Wyoming hasn't played anyone yet but is 2-3, losing last two games by a combined five points to Monmouth/Denver. MWC home favorites are 9-7 vs spread. Pepperdine is 1-3 vs D-I teams, with losses by 9-3-19 points, only win vs Hampton. WCC road underdogs are 6-5 vs spread.

Nevada has new coach, two new starters from LY's 21-13 team (11-5 in WAC); Wolf Pack lost by 13 at UNLV, by 9 to VCU. WAC road dogs are 7-9 vs spread. North Carolina is smarting from loss to Syracuse last week in NYC; they're looking ahead to Michigan St game Wednesday.

Remember, the Old Spice and 76 tournaments; the teams played Friday and Thursday, but had yesterday off........

Iona made 12-28 from arc in OT loss to Baylor Friday; they were 2-15 in 54-49 loss to Florida State Thursday; Siena of MAAC went 0-3 down here LY, but still won game in NCAAs. Creighton is 17-52 from arc in first two games of this event, forcing 20 turnovers. MVC faves: 7-8.

Xavier is just 19-34 from foul line last two games; its offense improved Friday; they shot 54% from floor, 9-18 from arc after being 6-11 from line on day they shot 36% from floor. Baylor has two good guards; they outrebounded Iona 45-27 Friday, but had 18 turnovers, didn't guard arc.

Michigan was just 3-20 from arc in Friday's loss to Marquette after they made 10-27 vs Creighton Thursday. Big 11 favorites are 14-9 vs spread. Alabama got to line 34 times Thursday, only 8 Friday, which explains why they're in 3rd place game. SEC underdogs are 5-7 against spread.

Marquette is playing great defense, allowing 63 ppg with foes 8-37 on arc in this event, wins by 7-14 points. Big East teams are 23-10 against spread away from home. Florida State cut its turnovers from 27 in first round game to 13 vs Alabama; they have wins in this event by 9-5 pts.

UCLA-Long Beach State in 7th place game at Anaheim wasn't exactly the plan for tourney organizers; Bruins are 12-42 from arc in this event, turning ball over 33 times in two games. 49ers got to line 34 times in the Clemson loss (Tigers were 6-8)- their losses this weekend are by 23-8.

Minnesota shot just 33% in loss to Portland, 3-19 from arc, but they did force 19 turnovers from veteran Pilots. Big 11 favorites are 5-4 on road. Texas A&M led by hoop at half vs West Virgnia, but they were 18-31 at foul line, 2-8 from arc. That catches up to them against an athletic foe.

Butler shot 28-33-39% from floor in its last three games (12-47 from arc in this event); Horizon underdogs are 7-11 against spread. Clemson shot 58% in win over Long Beach, but got to foul line onlu eight times; they shot 34% vs A&M, but made just 34% from floor, 5-18 from arc.

Portland is veteran team that shoots/passes well and has some size in the paint; they held UCLA/Minnesota to 33% from floor in both games, but West Virginia is better than either team, making 52-51% from floor in its two wins, by 23-7 points. Big East favorites are 11-6 away from home.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-156, 5.5)

An extended home stand was all the Ducks needed to snap their early-season funk. Anaheim has won four of their last five games and have two more games inside the Honda Center including Sunday's tilt with the Coyotes.

The Ducks are coming off a big 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night. They scored all three of their goals on the power play, turning in a 60 percent success rate with the man advantage. On the year, Anaheim ranks fourth in power-play efficiency with a 24 percent success rate.

“You could tell guys were focused today,” goaltender J.S. Giguere said after the shutout victory. “We knew that we had to play a good game to be able to have success against them. It was one of our better games.”

Anaheim won their last meeting with Phoenix, taking a 4-3 victory at home at the start of the month.

Pick: Anaheim -156

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks (-102, 5.5)

A red-hot goaltender can be a goldmine for NHL bettors. A red-hot Roberto Luongo could send your kids to college.

The Canucks All-Star netminder is beginning to heat up, allowing just over one goal over his last five games including a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night. He stopped 31-of-32 shots, improving his GAA to 2.45 and his save percentage to .912 on the year.

"They had a few chances, especially in the second period," Luongo told reporters. "I was seeing the puck well and it's something to build off of."

Luongo appears to be 100 percent for the first time this season. He missed six game earlier in the schedule with a hairline rib fracture. He was stellar in his most recent start against San Jose, turning away 28 shots for a 3-1 Vancouver victory at home last March.

Pick: Vancouver -102

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Montreal Alouettes (-9.5, 55.5)

Somehow these two teams share some similarities, starting with the obvious unity that bonds the players in both locker room and the preoccupation with details that has been enforced by their respective coaching staffs.

Both these teams got to Calgary by the front door - having both won their regular season and playoff division titles. Everything seems to indicate we will have a wonderful football game, even if the Alouettes won easily in both regular-season matchups (43-10 in Regina, 34-25 in Montreal one month later).

But actually, if you consider the statistics it should be a one-way affair in favour of the Alouettes, a team that averaged 33.3 points per game this year, compared to the 28.6 points per game scored by the Riders.

Add to these numbers the fact that the Montreal defence gave up only 18 points per game compared to almost 27 by the Saskatchewan, So we shouldn’t be surprised that the opening line tagged the Als as 9.5-point favorites.

The Alouettes have the best QB in the CFL, Anthony Calvillo, who completed close to 72 percent of his passes in 2009. In comparison, his counter-part Darian Durant only completed around 60 percent of his passes. Both quarterbacks have reliable targets to throw at: Bagg, Fantuz, Clermont and Getzlaf for the Riders while Montreal can count on Watkins, Cahoon, Richardson, Bratton and Green.

Montreal has an advantage in the backfield where Avon Cobourne had another stellar year and two great games against the Riders with a combined 242 yards rushing. Suffering from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the lineup for a few games, Riders RB Wes Cates didn’t have the type of season he is capable of.

Once again, the defence could decide the outcome of this game. The Als secondary is much more solid than the Riders and the front seven is superior, although no one should underestimate a defence that aligns defensive ends as talented as John Chick and Stevie Baggs.

On special teams, the advantage goes to the Alouettes starting with kicker Damon Duval and star returner Larry Taylor. The Riders will have to beware of Taylor on punt and kickoff returns.

The crowd will heavily rally behind the Roughriders but it won’t be enough, The Montreal Alouettes will win their first Grey Cup since 2002 and will cover the spread.

Pick: Montreal -9.5

Last Week 2-0, season 44-31-1
