“1 UNIT” SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL SIDE (Titans +4 at home versus Colts in an 8:20 eastern kickoff on NBC-TV): Of course Tennessee who had the best overall record in the AFC a year ago has gotten off to a disastrous 0-4 start. But it may not be wise to give up on them just yet as back in 2002 this team got off to a dismal 1-4 start and still made it all the way to the AFC Championship game under the direction of Jeff Fisher who traditionally has been one of the best “underdog” head coaches in the game. Fisher just happens to lead all active coaches with 133 victories in his initial NFL coaching job. The only other active head coach who comes even close to Fisher in that category is a Philadelphia’s Andy Reid who is in year #10 directing the Eagles. In my opinion the real key to this evening’s pick has to do with the fact that tonight is the ONLY game that Tennessee is going to play this month in front of their own HOME fans which makes it critical. Yesterday in college I scored with a Central Michigan contingent that was playing in their only October home affair and was not going to appear on friendly turf again for 32 full days. Despite the oddsmakers asking them to lay 23 points, Central Michigan successfully covered yesterday’s game by a “double digit” margin and we have a similar scenario this evening in the NFL. It was exactly one week ago in front of the NBC Sunday Night cameras that struggling Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh was out to make a “statement” and they promptly grabbed a 28-0 lead enroute to a spread triumph. One could make a strong argument that tonight is a “statement” game for Tennessee who with the entire nation watching will be out to prove they are not dead yet. It would be quite a loud statement if the Titans pulled off an upset this evening against an Indianapolis contingent that has ripped off a league high 13 consecutive regular season triumphs. With long time star wide receiver Marvin Harrison out of the mix and long time head coach Tony Dungy now working in television, one would have thought the Colts would not be as prosperous against the spread, but that has not been the case so far. With the Colts already appearing on a pair of National-TV primetime telecasts they have become popular again with the betting public as tonight’s line has jumped up from an opening figure of 3 points. The following may come as a shock to many of you but Indianapolis happens to be a money burning 3-9 ATS/ROAD long term when facing a DIVISIONAL opponent like the Titans. Meanwhile Tennessee has successfully COVERED the spread in 5 of the most recent 6 clashes against Peyton Manning and company. It may seem like an eternity but Tennessee opening week appeared on NBC in primetime and was very competitive in a 13-10 clash at Pittsburgh and I am looking for more of the same this evening. Here is an 81-PERCENT SYSTEM (26-6 past decade) which plays ON home underdogs of at least 3’ points like Tennessee who are on a 1-3 spread slide.
