Week #11's MLB Roundup
-- New York Mets right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka left his start Sunday afternoon against the San Diego Padres after just one inning with what the team described as a "severe upset stomach." Matsuzaka walked two of the first three batters he faced. Leadoff hitter Will Venable walked but was erased on a double play. Then, Matsuzaka was visited at the mound by manager Terry Collins and a trainer.
After a brief consultation, Matsuzaka remained in the game, but pitchers immediately began throwing in the Mets' bullpen. He retired Padres third baseman Chase Headley on a grounder to first base to end the inning but walked very slowly off the mound. Of the nine Mets on the field, he was the seventh to reach the dugout. Right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres, who relieved Matsuzaka to start the second and threw a season-high four innings as New York pieced together a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres at Citi Field.
-- Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, the reigning National League MVP, has joined the outfield leaders in the latest balloting update for the 85th All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 15 at Target Field in Minnesota. McCutchen, bidding for his fourth All-Star selection and first fan-elected start, has received 1,727,534 votes to rank second among NL outfielders. He is joined by outfield leader Yasiel Puig (1,942,701) of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Giancarlo Stanton (1,659,430) of the Miami Marlins.
-- Mets center fielder Curtis Granderson returned to the lineup against the Padres after missing three straight starts due to a left calf injury. Granderson served as a pinch hitter Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers and Saturday against the Padres. He did not play Friday. Granderson hit a leadoff homer off Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy. Granderson had two hits and two walks in the game.
-- The Houston Astros signed right-handed reliever Jose Veras to a minor league contract. Veras, the Astros' former closer, started this season with the Chicago Cubs. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (right hand contusion) hit before the game but was absent from the starting lineup for a third consecutive game. Altuve pinch-hit with one out in the ninth inning and grounded into a fielder's choice.
-- San Francisco Giants center fielder Angel Pagan was scratched an hour prior to first pitch due to lower back stiffness. Gregor Blanco moved to center field and batted leadoff, and Tyler Colvin played left and hit sixth. Giants right-hander Santiago Casilla (strained right hamstring) made his second rehab appearance for Class A San Jose on Saturday night, tossing two hitless innings and allowing one walk.
-- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was honored in a pregame ceremony before playing his final career regular-season game against the Oakland Athletics. Oakland hitting coach Chili Davis and Melvin presented Jeter with a check for $10,002 to his foundation from the team, as well as an assortment of parting gifts, including a three-liter bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley.
-- Seattle Mariners catcher John Buck made his first career appearance at first base when he replaced first baseman Logan Morrison after an incident in the dugout. Morrison cut a gash over his left eye when the bat he slammed against a dugout wall cracked and bounced off his eyebrow. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said the team still has no timetable for calling up right-hander Taijuan Walker, who threw six innings of no-hit ball before giving up his only hit allowed in a 6 2/3-inning performance at Triple-A on Friday night. Walker struggled with shoulder problems throughout the spring and early part of the season but appears to be getting closer to a clean bill of health.
-- Boston Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew returned to the lineup after missing six games with a sore oblique. Drew made his fifth start and had two hits and a stolen base. Red Sox third baseman Xander Bogaerts was out with flu-like symptoms, with utility man Brock Holt coming back into the infield to play third. Bogaerts was able to pinch run late. Holt had two more hits and is hitting .340.
-- St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez will make his first start of the season Monday night against the New York Mets. Martinez is starting in place of right-hander Adam Wainwright (elbow), who is skipping this turn through the rotation for rest purposes. The Cardinals purchased the contract of left-hander Nick Greenwood from Triple-A Memphis to give them a fresh arm in the bullpen due to Martinez's spot start. To make room for Greenwood, outfielder Randal Grichuk was optioned to Memphis.
-- The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of left-hander Blaine Hardy from Triple-A Toledo and optioned right-hander Corey Knebel back to the Mud Hens. Hardy started six games and relieved in 14 for Toledo, going 3-2 with a 2.68 ERA. He will pitch out of the bullpen for the Tigers.
-- The Miami Marlins recalled right-hander Sam Dyson from Triple-A New Orleans, where he was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA.
-- The Pittsburgh Pirates demoted second baseman Michael Martinez to the minors to make roster move for right-hander Vance Worley.
-- The San Diego Padres placed right-hander Nick Vincent on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 12, with right shoulder fatigue and purchased the contract of right-hander Blaine Boyer from Triple-A El Paso. Vincent is 0-2 with a 5.67 ERA in 30 relief appearances.
-- Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins went 1-for-4 after he passed Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt for the club's all-time hit record with his 2,235th.
-- Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury. The club called up infielder Pedro Florimon from Triple-A Rochester to take Plouffe's spot on the 25-man roster.
-- Oakland Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick (hyperextended right knee) will likely begin a rehabilitation assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento, A's manager Bob Melvin said before the game.
-- Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Wily Peralta rejoined the team after dealing with an undisclosed family matter in his native Dominican Republic. Peralta will start the opener of a four-game series at Arizona on Monday.
-- Kansas City Royals third baseman Danny Valencia, on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained muscle in his left hand, took batting practice again and is nearing an injury-rehab assignment.
