Florida State-10½ over Auburn

The SEC was a true power this entire season. The Conference has already produced six Bowl winners this season in eight attempts with the only two losers being Alabama and Georgia. Alabama was a 17-point choice over Oklahoma and Georgia was a nine-point favorite over Nebraska. The argument against Auburn is that many of their wins were deemed lucky and that argument has merit. Auburn ramped up the late-game drama down the stretch with a miraculous 73-yard tipped touchdown reception to beat Georgia and a 107-yard touchdown return of a missed field goal to stun Alabama, victories that pushed Auburn into the SEC title game and paved a path to the BCS. Take away those two wins and two or three others that they won by four points or less and this is an 8-4 football team. No one has been able to stop the Auburn ground game of late but in order to do so, you need two things to contain or stop it: time to prepare, and fast, athletic linebackers.

Florida State has had five weeks to put together a defensive game plan and practice containing this unusual Auburn option offense. The Seminoles have quick and talented LBs in Terrance and Telvin Smith, plus DE Christian Jones provides an athletic defender on the edge. Florida State has been exceptional against the run for most of the season and we expect nothing less here. The Seminoles barely broke a sweat this entire season. They won their first three games by a combined score of 157-26 before defeating Boston College in Week 4 by 14 points. No team would come within 27 points of FSU the rest of the way. As a 5-point choice over Clemson, FSU buried them early and walked off with a 51-14 victory. As a 21-point choice over Miami, FSU whacked them by 27. FSU is loaded with future NFLers and we’re not talking about five or six of them. We’re talking about 20 or more. Even if Auburn is the toughest opponent that Florida State will face this season is it really going to matter? The Auburn defense is ranked 104th in the nation in pass defense. Five quarterbacks threw for more than 300 yards and two had more than 400 yards on this Tigers defense. Auburn needed a last-second score to beat Mississippi State and of course those two aforementioned miracles over Georgia and Alabama. They were also 14-point losers to LSU. In that game, the Tigers gave up 457 yards (228 rushing). The Tigers were out-gained in four games this season and barely out-gained their opponents in three other games. Well, the clock has struck midnight and this Cinderella or rag to riches story is about to come to an end in a big way.

BCS Championship game, Pasadena, 1/6
SEC teams won last seven national title games, but won/covered last six as favorites; last underdog to win this game was Florida (+7.5) vs Ohio State seven years ago. Auburn won last five bowl games, four by exactly three points; but Malzahn is coaching his first bowl, while Fisher is 3-0 in his bowl games, winning by 9-4-21 points. Seminoles also won their last five bowls- their freshman QB Winston won Heisman and they've won 12 games by 28+ points. Boston College ran ball for 200 yards in an Sept 28 game, led early, then lost 48-34. Florida State simply hasn't had a stressful fourth quarter all season. Auburn has six wins by eight points or less; their QB is an average passer at best (he was once a Florida DB before going to JC), but they run ball- only once in their last nine games did they run ball for less than 282 yards. Tigers are 4-0 as dogs, winning three of them SU- their only loss was 35-21 (+17) at LSU- they pulled rabbits out of a hat vs Georgia/Alabama, can they do it here too? BC was only team all season to score more than 17 points vs Seminoles.

Monday, January 6

Pitt fell behind 19-4 in its ACC debut at NC State Saturday, won going away by 12; Panthers are are 13-1 with only three top 100 wins, by 21-9-12 points- they're forcing turnovers 19.8% of tine, holding opponents to 42.8% inside arc. Maryland is 10-5 with only one win by more than seven points- they have Allen back, so their depth at PG is improved.

West Virginia beat Texas Tech twice LY, by 16-2 points; Mountaineers won Big X opener by 5 at TCU Saturday, game they never led by more than 8 points- it was their first win in three true road games. Tech was down 15 at half to unbeaten Iowa State Saturday, tied game in second half but lost by 11; they're 0-6 vs top 100 teams, 8-0 vs everyone else. West Virginia is currently #56.

Appalachian State won eight of last ten games with Elon, but lost last two visits here, by 23-3 points; ASU is 4-9, but all four wins came vs non-D-I teams- they're 0-7 on road, with three of last five road losses by 8 or less points. Elon lost its last two games, is 5-7 vs D-I teams, but is 3-0 against teams outside the top 200, getting beat by 27-17-5 points.

Canisius won nine of last 11 games with Marist, but lost two of its last three visits here (won by 12 LY); Griffins are 3-0 in MAAC but held on for dear life in 67-63 (-4) win at St Peter's Saturday, after leading by 24 late in first half. Red Foxes won last four games after 0-9 start; their last game was Thursday, so they've had two extra days to prepare for this.

Chattanooga won 13 of last 15 games with Citadel, winning last two in this gym by total of six points; Moccasins won last three games by 5-6-9 points, winning 72-63 in SoCon opener at Furman. Citadel lost its last three games by 15-24-17 points; they're turning ball over 22.3% of time, shooting just 42% inside arc- they lost last six games with D-I teams.

Furman won three of last four games with NC-Greensboro, winning last two visits here by 13-8 points; Paladins are 3-8 in last 11 games vs D-I teams- they're 2-5 in true road games, with wins vs teams #320/344 in country, out of 351. Spartans won at Va Tech, lost by four to NC State, but they're 3-8 in last eleven D-I games, turn ball ovber 22% of time.

Quinnipiac survived 24 turnovers (-15) in 98-92 OT win over Iona LY in Virgin Islands, making 58.7% of shots inside arc before these teams were lweague rivals. Bobcats are 3-0 at home, winning by 10-3-4 points- this is their first home games in a month. Iona lost four of last five games but won 118-92 Saturday- they're #13 in countrey, making 41.3% on arc.

3* Total Annihilator on Wolves/Sixers OVER

These two teams should have no problem scoring enough points to send this game over the total. Minnesota comes into this matchup averaging 106.8 points per game. They have the luxury of facing a Philadelphia defense that is allowing 110.8 points per game at home this season. It is a similar story for the 76ers. They are averaging 104 points per game at home, but will be up against a Timberwolves defense that is allowing 103.9 points per game. For the most part, the oddsmakers have been unable to set the bar high enough on the total for these teams. Minnesota has gone over in six of their last eight games, while Philadelphia has gone over the total in seven of their last 10 games. If not for going under in three of their last four I suspect this total would be set even higher. I don't think the 76ers recent trend is an indication of anything. They played six consecutive road games, but in this matchup they are at home and playing with a day of rest. The over is 14-6 when Philadelphia is playing against a team with a losing record this season. It is also 15-4 in home games when playing a team making 76 percent or more of their free throw attempts. This matchup also fits into a very profitable system for a play on the over. You should play the over when a team, like Minnesota, is off a home loss against a division rival, and playing against an opponent coming off a road win by three points or less. This system has a 79-42 record in favor of the over.

Free Pick on Brooklyn Nets -

The Nets have looked like a rejuvenated team in their last two games. They have a very impressive road win over Oklahoma City to start the new year, and they are coming off a seven point win over Cleveland in their last outing. After an abysmal start to the season, combined with a few key injuries, the Nets were really down. In steps Deron Williams to pick up the slack and Brooklyn is once again a relevant team. Today they have the luxury of playing host to a Hawks team that is allowing 104.7 points per game on the road this season. A big reason for Brooklyn's recent success has come from improved play on the defensive end of the court. The Nets have allowed 101.5 points per game on the season, but in their last five games they have held opponents to 97.2 points per game. The Hawks on the other hand have been trending in the wrong direction. Atlanta has put up 102.6 points per game on the season, but in their last five games they average 99.2 points, which includes an 84 point performance in their last outing. This is a small number for the Nets to be laying at home.
