Bowl season's Best/Worst ATS and 'Over/Under' teams

If you’re looking for some solid bowl bets this postseason, why not start with the teams that made college football fans money in the regular season. We look at the best and worst ATS teams as well as the top Over and Under programs bowling this month:

Best ATS

Auburn Tigers (11-2-0 ATS)
Auburn has been fantastic this year rushing the ball, ranked first overall with 335.7 yards. They are also 11th overall in total yards with 505.3. Auburn covered its first 10 games by a comfortable margin and is an 8.5-point underdog versus Florida State – the other top ATS team in college football - in the BCS title game.

Florida State Seminoles (11-2-0 ATS)
Florida State’s margin of victory is 42.3 points per game - a record in the BCS era. Florida State is ranked second overall in points scored (53) and sixth in total yards with 529.4. Defensively, the Seminoles are first overall in passing yards allowed (152) and points allowed with a measly 10.7.

Best 'Over'

Florida State Seminoles (10-3 O/U)
The Seminoles have the most points for and the second-lowest points against in the country. Quarterback Jameis Winston ranks second with the most touchdown passes (38) and has the league’s highest yards per pass attempt at 10.9. Florida State is on pace to score more points than any team in the history of college football needing only 28 more to snap the 2008 Oklahoma State Cowboys’ record of 716 points. The total for the BCS Championship is at 66 points.

THE GOLD SHEET

★★★ COLLEGE KEY RELEASES ★★★
WEST VIRGINIA by 10 over Texas Tech (Monday, Jan. 6)

PITTSBURGH 73 - Maryland 71—Maryland is back to full strength with the return of skillful soph PG Seth Allen, who missed the first 13 games due to a broken foot. With Terp HC Mark Turgeon pleased with the improving depth on his frontline, look for the experienced Terps to give Pitt a 40-minute tussle, even in hostile Petersen Events Center. UM’s dynamic team leader, 6-5 jr. wing Dez Wells (15.9 pg, 5.4 rpg), usually brings his “A” game to these nationallytelevised tilts. Plus, the Panthers have been on a pointspread slide, dropping six consecutive spread decisions (pending North Carolina State game Jan. 4).
12- DNP Cable TV—ESPN2

★★★ West Virginia 80 - TEXAS TECH 70—WV has been itching for this Big 12 rematch ever since its 71-69 upset loss to Texas Tech in the conference tourney LY following a sweep of the regular-season meetings. The beatable Red Raiders—who failed in their only home game vs. a quality opponent (71-69 loss vs. LSU)—are coming off an emotionally-draining home contest vs. highlyranked
Iowa State just two 2 days prior. The Mountaineers’ smooth, multi-tasking jr. PG Juwan Staten (16.3 ppg, 6.3 apg, 1.3 spg) is undeniably the premier playmaker on this court, while 6-2 soph sidekick Eron Harris (18.3 ppg; 2.6 treys pg at 44.7%) has become a complementary lethal shooter from distance. 12- Wva -4' 77-61, WVA- 13' 66-64, Tech +8' 71-69 (CT-neut). KEY TO HOOP RATINGS: HCV—Home Court Value. CR—Current CABLE TV-ESPN

THE GOLD SHEET

PRO BASKETBALL
Minnesota 116 - PHILADELPHIA 103—Philly’s recent uptick (three SU
wins in last five thru Jan. 1) coinciding with Evan Turner’s recent scoring surge,
but wins over fading Lakers and Nuggets are not necessarily buy signals for the
Sixers, who had recently lost 15 of 17 SU. T-wolves will be on alert after having
to work for 106-99 home win over Philly on Dec. 11, rallying from 19 points down
in the process. But Minny also likely to shoot a lot better than 38% from floor,
as it did in first meeting. Though first meeting “under” last month, lots of “overs”
lately involving these two (Sixers 6-2 last 8; T-wolves 5-2 last seven, both thru
Jan. 1). 13-MIN -13 106-99 (211); 12-Min +3 105-88 (188), MIN -3' 94-87 (186)

Atlanta 107 - BROOKLYN 102—In the grab-bag Eastern Conference after
Miami and Indiana, Atlanta was starting to look like it might be next in the
conference ladder (though several rungs under Heat & Pacers) after SU wins in
9 of last 13 thru Jan. 2. Although recent pectoral tear injury suffered by key
frontliner Al Horford has tempered some of the enthusiasm in the Showcase
City of the South. Still, even minus Horford, prefer Hawks to disjointed Brooklyn
side now minus Brook Lopez (broken foot) and unable to count on much on a
nightly basis from aging Paul Pierce (limited to six points in Dec. 31 loss at San
Antonio) and Kevin Garnett (only two points, and no FGs for just second time in
career, in the same 21-point loss at San Antonio). “Totals” alert—Hawks “over”
13-2 last 15 thru Jan. 2. 12-ATL -3 109-95 (187), BRO -6' 94-89 (192), Bro +3'
93-80 (189), Atl +4 105-93 (188)

LA CLIPPERS 108 - Orlando 94—Expect Clips to be ready this time after
going flat in first meeting against Orlando at Amway Center back on Nov. 6,
when Magic scored 98-90 upset. In particular, look for L.A. to pay better
attention to Orlando C Nikola Vucevic, who burned Clips for 30 points and 21
boards that night. Doc Rivers’ troops didn’t help themselves by hitting only 37%
from floor in that loss. But Vucevic now nursing a sore ankle and status is iffy,
which might make it hard to expect a repeat performance from Orlando and help
Magic continue to offer good value as road dog (9-5 in role thru New Year’s)
13- ORL +7 98-90 (208); 12-Orl +12' 104-101 (199), La -5 86-76 (185)

PRO BASKETBALL
Minnesota over *Philadelphia by 4
The young 76ers could have trouble focusing since this is their first game back from
a six-game road trip that began on Dec. 21. This is the Timberwolves' lone road contest during a six-game span. Kevin Love entered the last couple of days of December having scored 25 or more points in 10 consecutive games.
MINNESOTA 110-106.

*Brooklyn over Atlanta by 5
The Nets have rallied since their rock-bottom performance against the Bulls on
Christmas Day. Inserting Shaun Livingston alongside Deron Williams was a very
sharp move by rookie coach Jason Kidd, giving Brooklyn two ballhandlers.
BROOKLYN 100-95.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Orlando by 14
Orlando opens a five-game road trip against the revenge-minded Clippers, who lost
on the road to the Magic, 98-90, on Nov. 6. The Clippers missed 16 of 19 shots from
beyond the arc in that loss.
LA CLIPPERS 105-91.

Pittsburgh* over Maryland by 18
Maryland is one of the ACC teams that wishes Syracuse and Pitt didn’t come over to
the ACC from the Big East. It’ll only get harder to win games from here on out. Bad
free-throw shooters, these Terps, who have a -2 Assist to Turnover Ratio vs. Pitt’s +7. Hello.
PITTSBURGH, 80-62.

West Virginia over Texas Tech* by 1
West Virginia beat Texas Tech twice in the regular season a year ago, then lost to this
horrible team in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, 71-69. West Virginia,
you’ll recall, lost its last seven Big 12 games last season. Huggins’ crew is still shooting
a lot of bricks and Tech has changed coaches to Tubby Smith.

Dallas +102 over N.Y. ISLANDERS

The Islanders are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday night but prior to that they had reeled off three wins in a row over Boston, Minnesota and Chicago. They also had a recent 3-0 win over the Red Wings so overall the Islanders have won four of their past six. That’s nice but this team is far too risky as the chalk because their chances of losing to superior teams are far greater than their chances of winning. The Islanders have a slew of strong offensive players but they are weak defensively and they’re weak in net. Playing a hungry team from the superior West is not the right time to be sporting a tag with this home team.

The Stars are not in a good mood. Dallas has lost two in a row and three of four. What’s most disturbing is that the Stars have allowed 11 goals against in their past two home games against Montreal and Detroit but trust us when we tell you it was not because of poor defense. Both Dan Ellis and Kari Lehtonen have been dreadful in net recently and that’s the only reason the Stars are losing games. Dallas outshot Detroit 45-27 on Saturday in a 5-21 loss and Dan Ellis was pulled after allowing three goals on five shots. The Stars recently played a near flawless game against St. Louis and lost 3-2 after allowing just 22 shots on net. Rarely does this team get outworked or outplayed and one of these two goaltenders is going to have to step up. Dallas is too good to keep losing games at this pace and if they get any type of adequate goaltending they are going to go on a serious run. The Stars embark on a three-game trip beginning here and they figure to play a strong game in the first contest of said trip. That should be more than enough to defeat this very beatable host.
