Switzerland-Honduras:
This is the value play of the tournament, and it happens to fall on the final day. Switzerland? Switzerland being treated like a powerhouse? Not even close. They have a phenomenal system of disciplined defense, and knowing when to counter, but that’s about all. Do NOT for a second judge their performance against Spain or even Chile. Why? Because, in both of those games they came in with a defensive minded demeanor, which was play defense first, and then attack with counters if they present themselves. Well, today they cannot do that. They HAVE to think offense first, and then defense second. So, Switzerland battling Honduras in an open game? We will take Honduras anytime. They have the better ball handlers and speed. Keep in mind Honduras has everyone fooled, because they have faced Chile and Spain. How are they going to get a fair judge of how good they are when they are facing two high caliber teams? Remember, soccer is about style and match ups. Styles determine outcomes. But, more important is situational analysis. This is all about SITUATION!
The situation is Switzerland HAS to play offense first and defense second. They are no longer in the luxury box of playing for a point. They have to realize that Spain has the edge in a tie break. They know they pretty much have to go for the win. If Switzerland was playing just for a draw, then of course you bet one of the best defensive teams in the world. However, that’s not the situation. They have to play for the win, and they are one of the worst offensive teams in this tournament. The situation is: AN OPEN GAME!
Knowing this is an open game, take a look at the individual speed and skill. That advantage clearly favors Honduras in an open game. Honduras also loves to flank, and the one problem the Swiss have are the flanks. They like to pack it in the middle. So, Honduras will rush from the outside, set up sand traps in the middle, suck in the Swiss to collapse the middle, and you will see a quick pass back outside, and hopefully a goal or two in the corner of the goals. We expect an exciting game, and quite frankly up and down action. You have a desperate team who doesn’t play offense trying to play offense, which will create chances for the opposition, and you have an undisciplined team like Honduras push everyone up, and get caught in counter chances. So, basically we are betting on Honduras, because of the situation. Do not be fooled by the Swiss. A VERY average team at best.
