“MORNING MOVES” NEWSLETTER & LINE-PREDICTIONS for SATURDAY APRIL 3rd, 2010
HANDICAPPING : “FINAL FOUR….LIVE from LAS VEGAS”
Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen…We finished up with a 3-3 split on Friday, but lost our “Morning Move” which I’m not too happy about…Because we really did have an inflated line and both the bookmakers and odds makers wanted the Pistons to cover so badly last night, they didn’t mind offering up such a “soft line”…But unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough to get us all a winner…
That was a perfect example of how even though you may know for sure going in that based on the “price”…you are definitely “getting the best of it”…that still don’t guarantee a winner every time…
But with that said…it does guarantee a winner “over time”…Because if you can continue to find positions where you are getting the best of it…then over time, you are going to be able to overcome the vig…and eventually turn a profit…
Because in the end…we are in the business of finding “value”…So what that means is that we are looking to get our money down on a position when we have the “best of it”…It really is that simple and this truly is a market…And if you are efficient in an inefficient market, you can definitely beat it long-term…
Which is always going to be our “Overall Goal”…
So as much as these losses piss me off on occasion…I do try very hard to keep it all in perspective…And keep in mind that even when I do uncover “value”…the players and teams won’t always cooperate…
Now today, we have the FINAL FOUR of the Big Dance…
With the winner from each game moving on to the Championship on Monday…And since we have covered plenty of betting concepts throughout the Tournament that will also help you handicapp the Final Four…I thought that for today’s Newsletter…I would simply pass along some news and notes straight from the Las Vegas Strip…
And since I’ve visited plenty of books this week…both “On” and “Off” the Strip…I can tell you what the bookmakers are saying…Plus, last night I went to the Showtime Boxing Matches at The Hard Rock…and had a chance to see the crowds begin to emerge on Vegas for this Final Four Weekend…That also includes a “marquee” Boxing Match on Saturday Night…between ROY JONES & BERNARD HOPKINS…
Also, rather than pass along a “Line-Prediction” for today’s Newsletter…I will instead pass along a “Fight Prediction”…since I had the opportunity to speak with a lot of very sharp boxing minds at the Showtime Fights…In fact, I got the chance to speak with guys who are very much behind the scenes and had some solid info…
But first…here’s what the books are saying…
VOLUME is expected to be good, even though it is Easter Weekend and many stay home with family rather than come to Vegas…But with it being a Fight Weekend as well as the Final Four and some Spring Breaks…I can tell you from being out there just last night…the city is pretty packed…
According to the books…with a good “handle & return” on the Final Four…they are expecting to have had a HUGE March Madness for the books…And what many have pointed out, is that along with so many upsets and one-sided games going the books way…there is also very little liability on Future Bets…
Because most of the Future Book they made consisted of Kansas & Kentucky…With very little on Duke, and even less on the other 3 participants…So this is one of the main reasons that the books were able to use the “send out” given to them by the odds makers…without having to adjust it based on the Future Bets they may have had pending…
More importantly for them…the Wiseguys only stepped up and saw “Value” early on DUKE & UNDER…But according to the books that I spoke with, they expect more than enough money on W VIRGINIA & OVER to limit their exposure…
In fact, after getting the opportunity to speak with books from Vegas, Off-Shore”, Locals, ect…they have all reported that they are getting a lot of balanced action on BOTH Final Four Games…
So by the time the games tip-off…the books expect to be able to sweep up a lot of vig…And also clean up on all the exotics…Like teasers, parlays, & props…Which always seem to give the books the best of it…
That isn’t a bad thing for bettors…It’s actually a good thing because knowing this, when we see any significant “line-move” prior to tip-off…we can be sure that it’s STEAM…And any STEAM will almost definitely be an Official Position…Unless of course you determine that it’s based on a “middle attempt” due to the earlier position taken…
And as I just passed along…the ONLY positions taken by the Betting Syndicates so far…have been on DUKE & UNDER…Which may have simply been a case of trying to get ahead of the market, especially if they were expecting the public to come in strong on the marquee name, “DUKE”…But since that is ultimately not the case according to books who state to have been getting plenty of Dog Money for that match-up…We can now sit back to watch and see if they try to get off that DUKE bet and maybe attempt a “middle“…or if they keep it, which would let us know that they do like that side alot…
As far as the Total…We can be pretty sure that the UNDER is a True Position…Because with the public prone to bet more Overs than Unders…the Betting Syndicates could have waited to see of the public money forced an adjustment…That would have given them an even better number to go Under…
Since they didn’t…But instead, went ahead and STEAMED the UNDER immediately after the line went up…We can be quite sure they felt there was Value there…And the fact that more than one Outfit STEAMED the Under…helps to confirm that opinion…
Now we can wait and see if they try to attempt a “middle”…Otherwise, it’s obvious that they feel they are getting so much the “best of it”…that it’s not even worth the attempt…This is how you need to be thinking about “line-moves” and how to analyze the market’s reaction throughout the day…Because it’s today…that the “public” will also speak the loudest…Since most bettors wait until game-day, and many until right before tip-off…to get their wagers down…
In the other match-up…of #5 Seeds…the books are reporting very balanced action on BOTH…the Side & Total…This is why we obviously haven’t seen much movement in the price since it’s been offered…And I know for fact that even though the Wiseguys are looking at a possible position…they have yet to take any in this game…
Now more times than not…when the game goes off, the books will need the Dog more than they need the Favorite…And that may also be the case for this game…But for such a marquee match-up that will attract a lot of betting volume…this type of balance is a blessing for the books…Because they have so little exposure…But they also have an opportunity to collect a lot of vig…And a lot of profit from exotics…
Finally, because of this…you should really monitor the line for the Side & Total in this game as well…Because any significant adjustment will tell us a lot…Meaning, with such balance…if there is a significant adjustment made…you can be very sure that the Outfits have STEAMED a position…Otherwise, we shouldn’t see more than 1/2pt adjustments made from book to book…depending on what their clients are wagering on…
So there is a lot going on this Weekend…for sports bettors and fans alike…Make sure you enjoy yourself, and also make sure to treat this like just another day in the course of a year…And don’t allow it to be anything more than that…
Thanks again for all your support…and best of luck…Vegas-Runner
FIGHT PREDICTION : ROY JONES vs. BERNARD HOPKINS
I felt it would be fun to pass along my insights for this marquee “pay-per-view” event, rather than a line-prediction…Especially since I scored some incredible tickets for the fight…Last night, I was at the Showtime Boxing Matches (Hard Rock)…And I kid you not, my guy gave me 2 tickets that were “Ring Side”…And I do mean “Ring Side”…In fact, I was right next to the Round Card Models…and believe it or not, Both…Mike Tyson & Roberto Duran were actually sitting 2 rows behind me…
So at these fights…since my hook up is very well connected with those in the boxing world…I got the opportunity to speak with guys that really know their stuff when it come to boxing…And I was able to confirm my own feelings about this fight…
Bottom Line…it’s about 10 years too late at least…But even so, it should be interesting and since B-Hop is a Philly guy…and Jones is such a “big name”…I’m actually pretty excited to get the chance to see it…
Now I have always prided myself on being honest and straight with all my guys…And that’s not going to change so I will tell you straight out…I AM BETTING THIS FIGHT…
But since the price is so high…and I feel responsible for your bankrolls…I won’t make this an Official Bet…
The reason for this is simple…I can’t be sure how your bankroll is doing…So I can only try and wager according to our Account Balance…And based on that balance this early in the year…it isn’t able to handle a position demanding so much chalk…Even though we do find ourselves already well ahead for 2010...
But for myself and the Fund that I manage…I am going to make this wager because the bankroll can handle laying that kind of chalk…And to be perfectly honest, we do this a lot of times throughout the year…And even though some may think that it’s crazy to lay odds like -400...I couldn’t disagree more…
Because if the TRUE ODDS are actually -500...then I am getting “Value”…And Value isn’t always with the Dog…So if I have to lay -400...but believe the line should be -500, I am ultimately getting the best of it…And if I can make a 25% Return on Investment in less than 60 Minutes…then I think that’s an excellent investment…And one that we make plenty of times…
So tonight…I am going to WAIT…until right before the bell rings…Because I am sure that there will be a lot more bettors tossing a little something on Jones…trying to get a lot more back…than there will be bettors willing to lay this price on Hopkins…It’s something that happens on almost every big fight…
Because when you tell people who aren’t pro bettors that they can put up $50 to win $200...or put up $250 to win $50...More times than not, they will bet the dog and take a shot…And this usually forces the line to drop significantly as the fight approaches…And many times, this is also when we see those Betting Syndicates and big time Pro Bettors step up and make a huge bet on the Dog…Looking at it exactly as I stated above…as a “return” of 20-25% in less than 60min…
I guess by now you know who I’m betting…BERNARD “B-HOP” HOPKINS
Right now…I’m seeing an average price of -450...But I’m hoping to find -400 or bettor before the fight begins…
And these are odds that I have no problem at all laying…In fact, I truly believe that this price should be closer to -650 or higher…So I’ll lay what they are asking all night long…
The reason for this…Jones is a “shot” fighter with almost nothing left…And going against someone like Hopkins is a very bad match-up for him, simply on “styles” alone…
But from what I’ve gathered…Jones just wanted to take advantage of another “Pay-Day”…And this may very well…and should actually be the last time that we see him fighting…
On the other side…sure Hopkins is old as well…But he really hasn’t taken much punishment at all in his career…His defensive style of fighting and unorthodox approach, has not taken a toll on him physically…And he’s always been known for being in top condition and from what I’ve been told, we should see the same tonight…
Finally…the motivation for Hopkins is just so much greater than it is for Jones…Hopkins is not only looking for revenge…but even though he’s no longer in his “prime”…he has not had the type of decline that we’ve seen Jones go through since his initial loss to Tarver…It was all down hill from there…
While Hopkins has still had some of his most impressive wins come when most said he should have already hung up his gloves…Just ask Kelly Pavlik…
In the end…there really is very little risk for Hopkins in this fight…Jones shouldn’t be able to hurt him, and Hopkins should easily coast to a win…Few think it will end in a KO since Hopkins has shown to have no problems getting a decision…But I wouldn’t be too sure…Because all the insiders that I spoke with say that Jones is a “shell” of his former self…And I think that if B-Hop senses the opportunity is there…he may very well look to end the night quicker than usual…
Do what you think is in your own best interest…I can only pass along all the information that I gather and all of the positions that I take…With the hope that you are able to use it and profit from it…VR

double-dime bet 814 MIL -2.0 (-110) BetUS vs 813 PHO
Analysis:
** NBA MORNING MOVES 2* PERSONAL PLAY **
MILWAUKEE BUCKS -2....(2*)
Based on the fact Milwaukee went to OT on Friday...we are getting some extra "Line-Value" on the Home Team for this match-up...Both teams will be playing their 4 game in 5 nights...But the big difference is that the Suns have been on the road since the 28th of March...Making this their 5th straight Road Game before heading home to face SAS and then OKC...before playing HOU & DEN next...So this looks like the perfect spot for a let-down game, especially against the Bucks who have gone "26-11" SU at Home this season...
The Bucks will also be playing with some REVENGE in mind after losing at Phoenix earlier in the season...And showed in that game, after losing by only 4 pts...just how well they match up against the Suns...
Let's go ahead and back the Bucks at -2...for Saturday's "Morning Move"...VR
