Polling like this is interesting but I have very little doubt that it will change quickly once people get a taste of the technology and cost-savings from autonomous driving. Especially people addicted to technology and connectivity, which is basically all of us under 70 at this point.

The entertainment options with music, TV and internet inside the car will make you not want to man the steering wheel for a 30-40 minute drive.

It's like Ford said "If I asked the people what they wanted, they would've said faster horses."

People get flight fears (safer than driving) mainly due to lack of control over fate .. What makes you think we will trust robots...

will take a while and lots of data in the field to convince most including me..

itll ll mainly be a gimmic with people clowning around with autopilot function of tesla on YouTube for a while.. Fully autonomous/no control will freak a large majority out for a while

The %'s are skewed because older people are more skeptical though. Younger generation up to their ass in subsidizing olds retirement, student loans, absurd cost of living, more tech savvy is much more eager to give it a shot. And this population is just growing more and more. Very eager to save 8-10k a year on autonomous uber as long as they think it is safe.

It'll happen eventually obviously.. Won't take long on a evolutionary universal scale time scale.. But measured in our short life span it'll take a while.. Ha

It's like pretty much anything technology/sci fi wise.. Man tends to time things in terms of their own personal existence so on that timescale it usually ends up coming way later than expected... We want to be optimistic and see these things before we die..

But if you expand out to evolutionary time scale of 100s of millions of years the changes taking place currently are humongous from mans population expansion, technological evolution, species extinction rate climate change etc..

imagine person from 1700s being shown society today.. Come 2300s if you put us there we'd be like huh WTF happened too and moreso than the guy going from 1700s to 2000s... As the rate of change keeps increasing.. as man and machine races towards the singularity and beyond...

Yeah, that is true. Why calls of a tech slowdown or deceleration can be a little shortsighted. I still think there is more we could be doing to foster expansion and disruption like I've said.

Some of it is as simple as the low hanging fruit got taken out in the early/mid parts of the 20th century and now any new breakthroughs are harder problems to solve. Like getting a car to drive itself or regenerative medicine or nuclear fusion.

It takes time for gains in basic research to be commercialized or scaled.

I still think that is too easy of an explanation as to why the sci-fi visions of the 50s and 60s didn't necessarily come true as much as people thought they would. Like you said though, a 20-30 year miscalculation in terms of progress is really microscopic in the grand scheme of it all.

The big advances in the 60s were military driven. An unbelievable amount of cash got thrown around by the USA until the early 70s and then the oil crisis and the gold standard crisis hit and things were never the same again.
I've seen estimates where that period pushed us up to 50 years ahead of where we should have been at, and we've certainly seen nothing like it since then.

Man/our ancestors discovered fire an estimated 0.2 to 1.7 million years ago... Hard to really nail down..

again no point in measuring evolution or "progress" on time scale of our lifetimes.. Or looking at miniscule 20-30 year Windows.. When you expand out to universal time scale the changes happening now are extremely rapid..

Inept/corrupt Government (always the case, the bigger it gets the worse the problem) and status quo protecting (economic policy not allowing creative distruction, big corporations in pocket/ear of policy makers economists etc) the main thing holding us back and slowing us down..

----------

The U.S. is still using floppy disks to run its nuclear program

(CNN)Want to launch a nuclear missile? You'll need a floppy disk.

That's according to a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), which found that the Pentagon was still using 1970s-era computing systems that require "eight-inch floppy disks."
Such disks were already becoming obsolete by the end of that decade, being edged out by smaller, non-floppy 3.5 to 5.25-inch disks, before being almost completely replaced by the CD in the late 90s.
Except in Washington that is. The GAO report says that U.S. government departments spend upwards of $60 billion a year on operating and maintaining out-of-date technologies.
That's three times the investment on modern IT systems.

The report says the Pentagon is planning to replace its floppy systems -- which currently coordinate intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), nuclear bombers and tanker support aircraft -- by the end of 2017.
Other departments were also put on notice to update their systems. The U.S. Treasury for example, still depends on assembly language code "initially used in the 1950s."
Bringing government departments into the 21st century has proven difficult across the board.
Megan Smith, the current U.S. Chief Technology Officer, told the New York Times in 2015 of the "culture shock" experienced by the tech-savvy Obama campaign when they took control of a White House still dependent on floppy disks and Blackberrys.

It's the lack of a legal framework to tackle corruption that's the real problem

In the UK we had the "expenses scandal" where hundreds of MPs fiddled their expenses.
When they got caught they said "oh dear I made a mistake." and handed back some money (A few scrapegoats got heavier treatment, about 3% of the thieving bastards)

Take a cheese slice from McDonalds "by accident" and you're sacked. No appeal, no wage packet next month and no pension rights.

[h=1]Bill Clinton identified in lawsuit against his former friend and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein who had 'regular' orgies at his Caribbean compound that the former president visited multiple times[/h]By Daily Mail Reporter 14:06 19 Mar 2014, updated 02:10 06 Jan 2015

  • The former president was friends with Jeffrey Epstein, a financier who was arrested in 2008 for soliciting underage prostitutes
  • A new lawsuit has revealed how Clinton took multiple trips to Epstein's private island where he 'kept young women as sex slaves'
  • Clinton was also apparently friends with a woman who collected naked pictures of underage girls for Epstein to choose from
  • He hasn't cut ties with that woman, however, and invited her to Chelsea's wedding
  • Comes as friends now fear that if Hillary Clinton runs for president in 2016, all of their family's old scandals will be brought to the forefront
  • Epstein has a host of famous friends including Prince Andrew who stayed at his New York mansion AFTER his arrest
A new lawsuit has revealed the extent of former President Clinton's friendship with a fundraiser who was later jailed for having sex with an underage prostitute.
Bill Clinton's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who served time in 2008 for his illegal sexual partners, included up multiple trips to the onetime billionaire's private island in the Caribbean where underage girls were allegedly kept as sex slaves.
The National Enquirer has released new details about the two men's friendship, which seems to have ended abruptly around the time of Epstein's arrest.

Pedophile paradise: The lawsuit included flight records that showed Clinton made multiple trips to Epstein's private island, Little St James (pictured), between 2002 and 2005. Women were reportedly kept there as sex slavesTales of orgies and young girls being shipped to the island, called Little St. James, have been revealed as part of an ongoing lawsuit between Epstein and his former lawyers Scott Rothstein and Bradley Edwards.
It is unclear what the basis of the suit is, but they go on to call witness testimony from some of the frequent guests at Epstein's island to talk about the wild parties that were held there in the early 2000s.

Convicted: Epstein was investigated in 2005 after a woman reported that he paid her 14-year-old daughter for sexFlight logs pinpoint Clinton's trips on Epstein's jet between the years 2002 and 2005, while he was working on his philanthropic post-presidential career and while his wife Hillary was a Senator for their adopted state of New York.
'I remember asking Jeffrey what's Bill Clinton doing here kind fo thing, and he laughed it off and said well he owes me a favor,' one unidentified woman said in the lawsuit, which was filed in Palm Beach Circuit Court.
The woman went on to say how orgies were a regular occurrence and she recalled two young girls from New York who were always seen around the five-house compound but their personal backstories were never revealed.
At least one woman on the compound was there unwillingly, as the suit identifies a woman as Jane Doe 102.
She 'was forced to live as one of Epstein's underage sex slaves for years and was forced to have sex with... politicians, businessmen, royalty, academicians, etc,' the lawsuit says according to The Enquirer.
Epstein's sexual exploits have been documented since 2005, when a woman in Palm Beach contacted police saying that her 14-year-old daughter had been paid $300 to massage him and then have sex.
The claim prompted a nearly year-long investigation that led to the eventual charge of soliciting prostitution which came as part of a plea deal. He spent 13 months of a 18-month sentence in jail and remains a registered sex offender.
Several of his famous friends cut ties- including Clinton and then-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer who returned his campaign donations- but not all of them: Prince Andrew reportedly stayed at Epstein's mansion in New York in 2010, months after he was released from jail.

Keeping ties: Clinton was also friends with an unnamed woman who stored pictures of underage girls for Epstein, and though Clinton cut ties with Epstein after his arrest, he invited the woman to Chelsea's 2010 weddingClinton's connection to Epstein, who worked as a financier and education philanthropist before more than 40 women came forward with claims about him being a sexual predator, has been long-established, but The Enquirer also tells how the former president was also friends with some of Epstein's seedy acquaintances.
The lawsuit claims that Clinton was friends with an unnamed woman who 'kept images of naked underage children on her computer, helped to recruit underage children for Epstein... and photographed underage females in sexually explicit poses'.
While he cut off ties with Epstein, this woman's abuses apparently did not end their relationship as she was reportedly one of the 400 guests at Chelsea Clinton's 2010 wedding.

Latest ladies: Clinton was pictured posing for a photo with Barbie Girl (left) and Ava Adora (right), two known prostitutes who work at the Bunny Brothel in NevadaThough the lawsuit may be bringing up sexual skeleton's from Clinton's past, he has added to the drama of late by posing for a photo with two known prostitutes at a fundraiser in Los Angeles last month.
The drama of his extramarital affairs is apparently just one concern for Clinton family loyalists, as a Wall Street Journal article released today details how
'I'm not in the political camp; I'm in the friends camp. And the friends camp definitely has concerns about her running,' the former Secretary of State's friend Linda Bloodworth-Thomason told the paper,

US election: Why has Trump caught Clinton in the polls?

For the first time in this long election campaign, Republican Donald Trump has pulled ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton in the RealClearPolitics average of national polls.

Mrs Clinton's double-digit lead, which she has held over the past several months, has vanished - and with it, apparently, Democrats' dreams of a transformational 2016 victory that would leave Republicans wandering the wilderness for a generation.

Trump angry as golf tournament is moved to Mexico

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has reacted angrily after a leading golf tournament was moved from one of his courses to Mexico.

The PGA Tour said it could not find sponsors to hold the 2017 World Golf Championship at Mr Trump's Doral course in Miami.

Mr Trump said the PGA had "put profit ahead of thousands of American jobs".

On the campaign trail, Mr Trump has portrayed Mexico as undermining the US economy.

Mr Finchem insisted the decision to move the event to Mexico City from Florida, where it has been held for the past 55 years, was not political.

"I hope they have kidnapping insurance," Mr Trump told Fox News.
Mr Finchem said that a member of his staff had already confirmed that this was in place.
"I haven't inquired about the detail," he said. "But I made the point that maybe that's something we don't want to advertise."

I don't know the #'s offhand but I would imagine kids doing oxy/roxy doesn't originate from prescription pill popping as much as you think. They probably just start on those drugs and then have to move to H because it is cheaper, but it still starts out in the partying gone too far and raiding parents cabinets rather than prescribed for them. Not sure tho...
