Also mother natures inability to control the human race is causing big imbalances in nature in general.. Species extinction rates are 10,000x the historical norm since the industrial revolution.. Humans are assholes :)

Obviously I personally got it "easy" that's not the issue..

Yes it is. You didn't "get it easy"
You got an opportunity to make a difference
Whether you pick it up and run with it is up to you, no-one else is responsible for that decision

Don't wake up at 70 and ask yourself "what did I do with my life??"

You gotta figure it out for yourself, or wind up in a bar with the rest of the losers drinking booze and talking nonsense

The clock is ticking on all of us. tick tick tick tick...

Still trying to figure out why the Chinese authorities are freaking out so badly about this market crash vs say 2007.. Comical actions being taken ...

--------

China’s securities regulator banned major shareholders, corporate executives and directors from selling any of their stakes for six months, the latest effort to stop a $3.5 trillion rout in the nation’s equity market.

Controlling shareholders and investors holding more than a 5 percent stake in a company will be prevented from cutting their holdings over that time period, the China Securities Regulatory Commission said in a statement.

ooh that's cruel, the truth hurts :D
Actually it was that couple of years I had off spending and enjoying, I realised that if I didn't find SOMETHING I was a just a bum. A rich bum, but still a bum.
I ended up having a long hard look at myself, It was a big wakeup for when retirement finally arrives
So no more TV, or smokes, and almost no booze.

Took me 50 years to get there, but at least I made it over the wall that appears in front of you when all the basics are sorted
Now I'm not going to live long enuf for all the things I wanna do, a hangover just loses me a day and I don't have enough of those suckers left to squander them
It always amazes me how many smart guys end up sucking on a bottle for the rest of their days once they've got the basics sorted out, there's no next level once the system has provided those things

Once man monkey has his freehold mud hut, his woman and a constant supply of meat and ale then there's nothing else worth aiming for, apparently

What did you find?

Nothing wrong with being a bum at least u being honest with yourself vs most who create this false sense of self importance .. Moderation my man I'm a pitcher deep and fully functional come tomorrow... I gave up TV/cable almost 2 decades ago ..the Bottle is just the easiest (and legal) means for "smart" (whatever that means) guys to dull themselves to reality..

Studies have show happiness in us peaks our around 75k income.. Look around at colleagues that above that level working 60
hour weeks constant travel big families etc no clue how they do it or what even motivates them..

I ended up doing model engineering stuff, it's a massive subject with so much to learn, but you will have to find your own "Thing" and only you will know when you've found it
Losing the anger and frustration and cynicism helps hugely

I grew up with the post WW2 generation who were the most contented people I ever knew and as I saw people around me getting richer and less contented with their lives, (Britain has seen massive wealth changes in my lifetime) I realised that wealth alone really wasn't the "route to contentment"

The post WW2 crowd had not-a-lot, a basic job with not too many hours, an allotment to grow stuff, joinery work, brown beer, good friends/a social network, cycling, a few chickens, and perhaps most importantly of all they didn't have massive expectations, they weren't bombarded with 24/7 TV adverts and articles.
I gave up TV for a month, as an experiment, and ended up wondering why it had taken me so long to try life with no TV

Now of course we have the net, so there's almost nothing you can't learn about, read up on, or buy on ebay or from China kinda thing once you find a replacement for all those TV hours you free up

I can actually trundle along on $12k a year all-in at the moment, life is so cheap if you don't feel the need to buy crap

The dog gets you outside and you meet loads of people, particularly useful in the summer months when the weather is good and not so much ME gets done and in the winter the dog gets less time and the engineering gets more effort. There's the metal munching stuff, welding, the ephemera(100+ years of books & magazines), the mathematics, old stuff, new stuff, boiler making, prototypes, engines, rockets, guns, turbines the list of stuff you can suddenly have a go at and acquire the skill set for just goes on and on

Complacency and contentment of baby boomer generation why things have become what they are today ... Allowing crooks to run rampant cause the masses are comfortable enough..

in the end it is what it is.. Nothing can be done about it.. I come off as a huge downer .. but just my venting zone..I'm just too much of a realist .. Wish I could live in ignorance as most do.. Finding your own "thing" just a distraction from it all.. I have my outlets .. Like I keep saying gotta lie/distract ourselves from reality to get by..most choose religion/kids..

Competitiveness, and the guy(or gal) with the mostest is the winner.

It's starting to fuck up some of the people I know who are still at it in their 50s, the health issues are starting to kick in bigtime in some cases but they don't know anything else, it's like there is nothing else, they'd be lost without it

That's corporatism. We had none of that blatant corruption stuff in the UK before the 1980s.

The bigger corporations get, the more political corruption you will have

And if you want to control those corporations then "you're a communist!"

And remember that corruption is a natural part of business life, part of the human DNA. I audited loads of small companies for a few years as an accountant and nearly all of them had a dabble in that grey area between legal and illegal in their business dealings.

All Businesses "need an edge" to get ahead of the game and some edges are easier to find and easier to hide

When things were smaller a business owner would become part of a local council to give himself better access to council affairs and "opportunities" for his business.
Scale things up to what we have today, it's just people and corporatism.
No empire ever survives forever, eventually assholes will bring a civilisation down and people will get by until the next "great civilisation" happens which is really no different from a small company which runs for a generation or two until moron siblings arrive to run things and allow the family business to go tits up

An interesting take on morality

Lefties have too much serotonin
Righties have too much dopamine

‘Parkinson’s-fighting drugs can make you more selfish’ – study

Drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease and depression have been found to affect users’ morality, new research suggests.

Dopamine-enhancing drugs often prescribed to Parkinson’s sufferers were found to make healthy people more selfish, while anti-depressants were found to make people more protective of others.

Psychologists at Oxford University say the difference in behavior was noticeable from a single exposure to the drug, raising questions about how stable a person’s moral values are.

Research leader Dr. Molly Crockett told the Guardian the drugs were having a potentially life altering effect on people, but clarified they would not turn “a healthy person into a criminal.
The study involved 175 participants, 89 of whom were given either the serotonin-boosting anti-depressant citalopram or a placebo and 86 of whom given either levodopa or a placebo.
Participants were split into pairs, with one person designated a “decider” and the other a “receiver.”

The decider was given the opportunity to earn cash by giving an electric shock to the receiver, however the money could also be paid to prevent shocks. The shocks were mildly painful and matched to each person’s pain threshold.
Psychologists discovered that those given serotonin-boosting anti-depressants offered to pay 60 pence (94 US cents) to stop themselves being shocked and 73p to stop someone else receiving one.
Those who took a placebo offered to pay an average 35p to stop themselves getting an electric shock and 44p to stop someone else receive one.

Crockett linked the impact of levodopa to the fact some Parkinson’s sufferers who take the drug go on to develop gambling addictions and compulsive sexual behavior.
The drugs have consequences that reach out into the world beyond the patient,” she said.
The central message is we need to have more research into how these drugs affect behavior, both in healthy people and in people taking them for disorders.
We’re not transforming someone from a healthy person into a criminal or anything like that. But in aggregate we make decisions multiple times a day and they can shape our lives,” she added.

Psychologists predict in the future tests could be developed to determine whether a person’s decision-making has been radically altered by a drug.

The results for dopamine-enhancing levodopa were the complete opposite, with people on average delivering 10 more shocks to others during the experiment than those given a placebo.
The dopamine drug made people more selfish … Most people show this pattern where they think it’s worse to harm other people than to harm oneself. That’s abolished by the drug,” Crockett said.

I'd say I called it but that was easy 1 to call. Nobody wants that type of uncertainty. Microcosm of the world.

They bottled it. Talked tuff... then peed their pants and the Germans steamrollered over the top of 'em

You never show weakness with the Germans or you-are-toast

That guy they got rid of was made of sterner stuff, Yanis Varoufakis
