Given the era and state of special effects at the time, like many others, the answer is The Exorcist.

Was 14 and saw it on a Sunday afternoon in NYC (waited over 2 hours on line). Being in a jammed packed theater and the level of angst in the room is something I've never experienced since. Took a bus back to Boston with a friend and ended up cutting through some woods in the dark to get to his house. We both got totally spooked and ran at full speed through the woods (plus the extra 3 blocks to his house).

Murder in the Rue Morgue in the early 50's. I was about 6 or 7. For a long time I was afraid of Gorillas. :sad3: LT

I've seen most of these mentioned and to me its The Ring. Beats even the Exorcist to me.

I dare anyone to rent the DVD, watch the movie, and then go to the special features section and be able to watch the forbidden video.

Did someone really say Blairwitch Project?? That movie was absolutley terrible and the worst attempt at a scary movie I've ever personally witnessed. Maybe, it just didn't live up to the hype but I thought it was a better unintentional comedy movie then a scary movie.

I thought the same!!

I didn't think the Ring was scary...just didn't get the hype over it.

Omen was another creepy one...but again I am just terrified of creepy little kids

The power of nature is by far the most scary.

Watch "10.5 apocalypse" if you are able to find it.

Intereting thread and I think the answer for each person kinda depends upon his age when He first saw the movie. For me I will go way back to when I was probably 8 years old and the Movie was " The Thing " played by none other then James Arness of Gunsmoke fame. Another flick of that era was of course " Psycho " ! I watched it endlessly but perhaps it had something to do with Janet Leigh !

When I was a kid this movie called "The Crawling Eye" scared the shit out of me. Forrest Tucker of F Troop fame is in it. Really dumb movie, but I couldn't sleep after watching that flick.

Nobody's mentioned the low budget "Night of the Living Dead". Really scared me first time I saw it.

The Crying Game.

the first hellraiser was the first movie were I was white knuckling my chair watching it. I remember watching it at a friends house and literally being in a cold sweat watching it. Nothing has come close to that scary yet for me.
