Preview: Braves at Marlins

GAME: Atlanta Braves (16-19) at Miami Marlins (16-20)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 1:00 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: 115, -124 TOTAL: 7.5

Giancarlo Stanton can hit a baseball as far as anybody in the majors, but the Miami Marlins’ slugger needs more help to get his team out of an early-season funk. Stanton and the Marlins host the Atlanta Braves on Saturday after losing Friday’s series opener 5-3, a contest in which the Marlins’ superstar blasted a pair of homers – including a 474-foot blast in the seventh inning.

Stanton has belted 25 homers traveling at least 450 feet since 2010, but while Dee Gordon continues to set the table at the top of the lineup, Miami needs Christian Yelich (.186) and Michael Morse (.214) to heat up. The Braves benefited from the addition of Todd Cunningham in Friday's lineup, the Triple-A call-up experiencing a career night with three hits, two runs scored and a stolen base. Atlanta is 2-5 through seven games of a nine-game road swing and trails first-place New York by 3 1/2 games in the National League East. Miami has dropped eight of its past 12 and sits four games behind the Mets.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Alex Wood (1-2, 4.28 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Mat Latos (1-3, 4.72)

Wood continues to search for the success that led to 11 victories a year ago, giving up eight hits or more in four of his past six starts. He struck out seven while allowing three runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings May 10 at Washington. Wood opened his season at Miami by beating the Marlins for his only victory of 2015, giving up two runs on four hits in five innings.

Latos has pitched much better in May after a rough first month in a Miami uniform, earning his first Marlins victory May 5 at Washington and allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings five days later at San Francisco. In May, Latos has surrendered two earned runs in 13 1/3 innings after posting a 6.86 ERA in five April starts. Latos was bombed by the Braves in his Miami debut for seven runs in 2/3 inning April 7, and gave up three runs (two earned) in four innings at Atlanta six days later.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cunningham’s only other major-league experience came with the Braves in 2013, going 2-for-8 in eight games.

2. Stanton recorded the 14th two-homer game of his career and has hit 12 of his 164 career longballs against the Braves.

3. The Marlins are 8-8 at home this season, with four of the defeats coming to Atlanta.

Preview: Rays at Twins

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (20-17) at Minnesota Twins (20-16)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: -107, -101 TOTAL: 8.5

Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier belted a total of 41 homers over the last two seasons and, after a slow start in 2015, his power is coming back with three blasts in his last six games. Dozier looks to continue the power surge and extend his hitting streak to eight games as the Twins host the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in the middle contest of their three-game set.

Dozier is 10-for-29 during his streak, including a solo homer and the go-ahead sacrifice fly in Friday’s 3-2 victory in the series opener as Minnesota improved to 13-5 at home. The Rays saw their three-game winning streak come to an end after leaving two runners in scoring position in the last two innings. Joey Butler recorded a pair of hits in two of the last three contests for Tampa Bay, which won all three games at Minnesota last season. Rays three-time All Star Evan Longoria has cooled off after a red-hot stretch, going 3-for-23 over the last six games with eight strikeouts.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Colome (2-1, 5.63 ERA) vs. Twins RH Trevor May (2-3, 5.40)

Colome began his season with two solid starts before being pounded for eight runs on 11 hits - four homers - over six innings by the New York Yankees on Monday. The 26-year-old Dominican has shown plenty of control with 16 strikeouts and just one walk over 16 frames. Torii Hunter (0-for-3) is the only member of the Twins who has faced Colome, who is 4-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his career on the road.

May permitted two runs or fewer in four consecutive outings before giving up six on nine hits and three walks over four innings in an 8-2 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. The 25-year-old Washington native has surrendered 39 hits in 30 frames but issued only eight free passes in six starts. May, who has yet to last more than six innings in his career and is 2-2 at home in 2015, will face Tampa Bay for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota LHP Glen Perkins has converted all 12 save opportunities - including Friday’s - and has recorded 14 strikeouts without a walk over 16 1/3 innings.

2. Tampa Bay LHP Jake McGee, who registered 19 saves last year, warmed up Friday but has yet to make his season debut after undergoing elbow surgery.

3. Minnesota CF Aaron Hicks has hit safely in all four games since being recalled from Triple-A, going 5-for-14.

Preview: Tigers at Cardinals

GAME: Detroit Tigers (22-14) at St. Louis Cardinals (24-11)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: -114, 105 TOTAL: 7.5

David Price’s tender hamstring won’t keep him off the mound when the Detroit Tigers visit the St. Louis Cardinals for the second contest of their three-game series on Saturday. The star hurler suffered the injury against Kansas City on May 8 and had his turn pushed back two days before being cleared to pitch against St. Louis.

Price hurt his right hamstring when he stepped on a bat that had been thrown to the side by an umpire in case of a play at home plate. “If I had to stay on five days – if it was the playoffs or the World Series or something and I needed to pitch – I would have been out there,” Price told reporters. The Tigers rolled to a 10-4 victory in the opener as Miguel Cabrera hit his 399th career homer to tie Andres Galarraga for most by a Venezuelan-born player. The blast was the ninth of the season for Cabrera, but the first to occur in a night game.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH David Price (3-1, 3.30 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Tyler Lyons (0-0, 4.82)

Price’s pitching wasn’t so splendid in the outing against Kansas City as he gave up four earned runs and a season-high 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings while receiving a no-decision. He had allowed just 11 hits over his two previous starts – both wins – and has struck out three or fewer batters in three of his last four turns. Price, who never has faced St. Louis, is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in three road outings this season.

Lyons will be making his third start since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis. He did not factor in the decision against Pittsburgh in his last turn, when he allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in five innings. Lyons has struck out 91 in 99 career frames despite owning a 2-8 record.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals LF Matt Holliday went 1-for-5 in the opener and has reached base safely in 33 straight games, tying Albert Pujols (2005) for the second-longest streak to start a season in team history. Pujols also holds the record of 42 consecutive contests, set in 2008.

2. Detroit CF Anthony Gose recorded three hits on Friday and is 19-for-43 over his last 10 games.

3. St. Louis SS Jhonny Peralta is hitless in 13 career at-bats against Price.

Preview: Pirates at Cubs

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (17-19) at Chicago Cubs (20-15)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: 102, -110 N/A TOTAL: N/A

It has been nearly four years since the Chicago Cubs won six straight games, a goal the resurgent bunch will try to attain in the continuation of a three-game series with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on Saturday. Following a four-game home sweep of the New York Mets in a set that featured three nail-biters, the Cubs picked up another by outlasting the Pirates on Friday with an 11-10 win in 12 innings.

The five-game run matches their longest since a seven-game streak in the summer of 2011. Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant - batting second and third, respectively, for the third time this season - both homered and combined for six RBIs on Friday. Chicago is 7-3 when Rizzo hits second and is now 5-3 against the Pirates, who fell to 0-5 in extra-inning affairs. Pittsburgh looks to turn things around by giving the ball to Gerrit Cole, who has been dominant in Chicago over the course of his career, against Cubs southpaw Jon Lester.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (5-1, 2.32 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (3-2, 4.10)

After giving up a total of three earned runs over his final four starts in April, Cole has let up five runs in 12 innings over two May outings, gathering a win with a solid effort at Philadelphia on Monday. That start left him at 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA over his last three road starts, which includes six innings of an 8-1 win at Wrigley Field on April 29, when he yielded an unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Overall, the 24-year-old is 4-0 with a 3.00 mark in four career starts in Chicago's North Side.

Following a winless April in which he posted a 6.23 ERA, Lester has won each of his three starts this month and extended the run with six innings of three-run ball in a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Monday. This will mark the sixth home start out of eight altogether for Lester, who lost his only prior outing against Pittsburgh in 2011 when he let up two earned runs in six innings of a 3-1 setback. Lester needs three strikeouts to become the 200th pitcher to reach 1,500 for his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen has two homers and eight RBIs over his last five games.

2. Cubs SS Starlin Castro is 5-for-11 with a walk against Cole.

3. Seven of Chicago's eight wins in May have come by one run.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (15-19) at Philadelphia Phillies (14-23)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: -106, -102 TOTAL: 8

The Philadelphia Phillies attempt to extend their season-best winning streak to four games when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle contest of their three-game series on Saturday. Philadelphia posted its season-high third straight victory in the opener, staging a three-run rally in the seventh inning that was capped by Jeff Francoeur's tiebreaking RBI single after yielding three runs in the top of the frame.

The Phillies are 4-4 on their 10-game homestand after going 6-6 at Citizens Bank Park last month. Paul Goldschmidt drove in a pair of runs and Ender Inciarte collected three hits for the Diamondbacks, who kicked off their seven-game road trip with their third loss in four overall contests. Since Rubby De La Rosa combined with two relievers to shut out San Diego on May 7, Arizona's pitching staff has allowed at least four runs in six of the last seven games. The bullpen has been its downfall in each of the last two contests, squandering a lead against Washington on Wednesday before faltering again versus Philadelphia.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, WCAU (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (2-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerome Williams (2-3, 5.21)

Bradley will make his return to the mound after being drilled in the face by a line drive on April 28 against Colorado. The 22-year-old had gotten off to a strong start in his rookie season, winning his first two decisions while allowing a total of three runs over 18 2/3 innings in his initial three starts. Bradley has had control issues, however, issuing 11 walks in those three outings while yielding only seven hits.

Williams has lost each of his last two outings, including a setback against Pittsburgh on Monday in which he allowed three runs in five innings. The 33-year-old has surrendered three or more earned runs in five of his seven starts but has yet to walk more than two batters. Williams has made 10 career appearances (nine starts) versus Arizona, going 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks INFs Aaron Hill and Yasmany Tomas did not start Friday's game due to flu-like symptoms, but the latter appeared as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning.

2. Philadelphia RHP Luis Garcia on Friday recorded a two-inning save in the opener, the first of its kind for the team since Ryan Madson accomplished the feat on Sept. 29, 2009 against Houston.

3. Arizona manager Chip Hale has removed RHP Addison Reed from the closer's role - at least temporarily - so the hurler can work on his mechanics.

Preview: Angels at Orioles

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (18-17) at Baltimore Orioles (15-18)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: 102, -110 N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Angels have surged above .500 on the back of their pitching staff. Jered Weaver worked eight strong innings on Friday and Matt Shoemaker will try to match that effort when the Angels visit the Baltimore Orioles again on Saturday.

Los Angeles has allowed a total of five runs during its four-game winning streak and has taken seven of its last nine overall while surrendering an average of 2.3 runs. The pitching is helping to mask an offense that is scuffling and recorded only seven hits in Friday’s 3-1 triumph. The Orioles are losers of seven of their last 10 to drop three games below .500 and managed only J.J. Hardy’s solo home run on Friday. Baltimore began its homestand by taking two of three from Toronto and is 10-7 in its own park.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (2-3, 6.61 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (3-2, 2.41)

Shoemaker is struggling to find the form that made him a dominant starter for Los Angeles last season. The Michigan native’s velocity is down from 2014, and he was rocked for six runs on as many hits – three home runs – in three innings against Houston last Saturday. Shoemaker lost his only previous start against Baltimore while yielding four runs and striking out 10 in 5 2/3 innings.

Jimenez is stepping in to give scheduled starter Bud Norris an extra day to recover from an illness. Jimenez struck out a season-high nine and allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings to beat Toronto on Monday. The Venezuela native is looking for his first win against the Angels and owns a career record of 0-4 with a 6.12 ERA in four starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels RHP Huston Street, who signed a two-year contract extension on Wednesday, has allowed one hit in his last four appearances.

2. Norris or RHP Chris Tillman will start Sunday’s series finale for Baltimore.

3. Los Angeles CF Mike Trout is 1-for-11 in the last three games.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (17-20) at Houston Astros (23-13)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 109, -118 TOTAL: 8.5

The Houston Astros look to extend their winning streak to four games when they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night in the third of a four-game set. The Astros lead the American League in home runs with 52 after slamming three for the second time in three games in Friday's 8-4 victory over slumping Toronto.

George Springer, who clubbed 20 homers in 78 games as a rookie, connected for the second time in three games since returning from the 7-day concussion list. Houston is also getting power from some unexpected sources as Luis Valbuena hit his team-high ninth - more than halfway to last year's career-best 16. Jose Altuve, batting .338, went deep for the fifth time and is two shy of his career high. The Blue Jays lead the majors with 193 runs scored but they have allowed 180 - also tops in baseball.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, RSN (Toronto), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (1-2, 3.54 ERA) vs. Astros RH Scott Feldman (2-4, 5.23)

Estrada, who surrendered a major league-leading 29 home runs last year, had done a good job of keeping the ball in the park this season until he was victimized by a pair of blasts in a 5-2 loss at Baltimore last time out. He lost his previous outing after giving up five runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings versus the Yankees. Estrada, who began the year in the bullpen, is 1-0 in nine appearances (three starts) versus Houston.

Feldman received one run or fewer in run support for the fourth time in seven outings and took the loss against the Angels despite going seven strong innings and giving up three runs. He was knocked around for six runs and nine hits over three innings in his previous turn against Texas. Feldman has made 14 appearances (eight starts) against Toronto and posted a 2-4 record and 5.08 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Altuve is 4-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the series.

2. Blue Jays RF Chris Colabello continued his torrid hitting since his promotion from the minors and is batting .474 in 10 games.

3. Toronto acquired SS Ronald Torreyes from Houston for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 103, -111 TOTAL: 8

The Kansas City Royals are taking advantage of a series against a fellow division leader to make a statement about their place in the American League. The AL Central-leading Royals will try to follow up a dominating 12-1 win in the series opener when they host the AL East-leading New York Yankees again on Saturday.

Kansas City blasted a pitcher in Michael Pineda on Friday who was coming off one of the best starts in Yankees history and kept the pressure on against the bullpen while pounding out 17 hits. Lorenzo Cain did the most damage with three hits, two runs scored and five RBIs on Friday while Mike Moustakas recorded a triple and two doubles among four hits in the triumph. New York is struggling to find its own offense while totaling six runs during a four-game slide. The Yankees began their road trip with an 11-5 win in Tampa Bay but have since been outscored 25-6.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (1-5, 5.20 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (2-2, 5.67)

Sabathia picked up his first win on Monday while holding the Tampa Bay Rays to four runs (three earned) in seven innings and striking out a season-high nine. The burly veteran surrendered a season-low six hits in that start but two of them cleared the fence, giving him seven home runs allowed in his last four starts. Sabathia is 18-11 with a 3.25 ERA in 36 career starts against Kansas City.

Duffy is coming off back-to-back terrible outings in which he was charged with a total of 10 runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old had his control abandon him at Texas on Monday when he issued six walks. Duffy has not had much success against New York in his career, posting a 1-1 record while allowing 13 runs and 19 hits in 14 total innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees placed RHP Chase Whitley (torn elbow tendon) on the DL on Friday.

2. Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer has hit safely in 12 straight games.

3. New York 2B Stephen Drew is 0-for-11 in his last three games to drop his batting average to .171.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (18-18) at Cincinnati Reds (18-18)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: 133, -144 TOTAL: 8

The Cincinnati Reds promised their fans fireworks on Friday night, but all they could deliver was some smoke and a small fire followed by a flameout. The Reds will try to bounce back from a 10-2 drubbing when they host the San Francisco Giants on Saturday in the third of a four-game set.

Brandon Belt provided most of the fireworks as San Francisco squared the series at a game apiece, swatting his first homer of the season as part of a three-hit, four-RBI night. It marked only the fourth victory in the last 16 games for the Giants at Great American Ball Park and came on a night when one of the stadium smokestacks beyond the wall in center field caught fire. Outfielder Hunter Pence, sidelined since March 5 with a broken left forearm, could make his first appearance of the season for San Francisco in Saturday's game. Cincinnati needs a solid outing from right-hander Mike Leake on Saturday after its bullpen was taxed for six innings Friday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (1-2, 5.67 ERA) vs. Reds RH Mike Leake (2-1, 2.36)

Vogelsong turned in his second straight superb performance, limiting Miami to one run and four hits in seven innings without a decision Sunday. That followed a magnificent outing versus San Diego, when he earned his first victory of the season with seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball. Vogelsong is unbeaten in seven appearances (three starts) at Cincinnati, logging a 2-0 record and 4.18 ERA.

Leake finally had his scoreless streak snapped when he permitted one run on eight hits over six innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta. It was the shortest outing since the season debut for Leake, who worked eight scoreless innings in each of his previous two turns in victories at Pittsburgh and Atlanta. Leake is 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA against the Giants but has struggled against Buster Posey, who is 5-for-13 with a homer.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants OF Gregor Blanco is 7-for-13 with four doubles and four runs scored in the past four games.

2. Reds 3B Todd Frazier is 5-for-12 with two homers during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Pence hit 20 homers and drove in 74 runs a year ago to help the Giants win the World Series.

Preview: Brewers at Mets

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (13-23) at New York Mets (20-16)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: 129, -140 TOTAL: 7

Injuries and controversy have marred the last couple of years of Ryan Braun’s career, but the former MVP looks like he is regaining his power stroke. Braun will try to build on a two-homer opener when his Milwaukee Brewers visit the New York Mets for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Braun’s return to form has coincided directly with a surge for the Brewers, who have won four of their last six games and eight of 13. Braun has 14 runs scored and 11 RBIs in the last 13 games and sent a blast into the second deck on Friday to provide the highlight for Milwaukee’s 7-0 triumph. New York is streaking in the opposite direction and saw its losing streak hit five with Friday’s loss. The Mets have dropped 11 of their last 16 games and the offense has managed three or fewer runs in 10 of those setbacks.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Matt Garza (2-4, 4.04 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (3-4, 3.46)

Garza had his best outing of the season last time out but did not factor in the decision despite allowing one run and three hits in seven innings. The 31-year-old yielded three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts but came out with a win in only one of those outings. Garza has never lost in three career starts against the Mets, going 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA.

deGrom is trying to bounce back after getting knocked around for four runs on five hits and a season-high four walks over five innings in a loss at the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The 26-year-old is 1-3 with one quality start in his last four turns and failed to make it through six innings in all three losses. deGrom made two starts against the Brewers in his 2014 rookie campaign, going 1-1 while allowing a total of three runs in 12 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 2B Dilson Herrera is expected to be placed on the disabled list after breaking the tip of his finger on Friday.

2. Milwaukee OF Gerardo Parra homered on Friday and has multiple hits in each of his last three starts.

3. New York SS Ruben Tejada is 1-for-9 in his last four games to drop his batting average to .205.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (13-21) at Texas Rangers (15-21)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -133, 123 TOTAL: 8.5

A visit to Texas provided an immediate boost for the slumping Cleveland Indians, who will go for their 13th victory in the last 14 meetings against the Rangers on Saturday at Globe Life Park. Cleveland kicked off a seven-game road trip with an 8-3 romp on Friday night to improve to 6-1 in its last seven at Texas.

The Indians got 10 hits from the trio of Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley and Nick Swisher, who also collected his first three RBIs of the season. Kipnis continued his white-hot tear with four hits Friday, giving him nine multi-hit games and a .519 batting average in May. Brantley has hit safely in 13 of 14 games and is batting .389 in that span after collecting a pair of RBI doubles Friday. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre reached a major milestone in the series opener, becoming the 52nd play to swat 400 homers.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (4-1, 3.27 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Colby Lewis (3-2, 2.40)

After splitting a pair of decisions against Kansas City and giving up four runs in each, Salazar turned in a dominating performance last time out with 11 strikeouts and one run allowed over seven innings against Minnesota. He has surrendered a homer in each of his five starts but has fanned 48 while walking only five. The 25-year-old Dominican won his lone career start versus Texas with six innings of one-run ball.

Lewis extended his string of stellar outings in May by shackling Kansas City on one run and three hits over seven innings on Monday. The 35-year-old Californian permitted one run over a season-high eight innings at Houston in his previous turn and has yielded only two runs over his last 21 innings. Despite a 2-1 record against the Indians, Lewis has a 6.37 ERA and has coughed up five homers in 29 2/3 innings against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kipnis is 17-for-29 with nine runs scored during a seven-game hitting streak.

2. Rangers 1B/DH Prince Fielder has three homers and eight RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

3. Cleveland moved C Mike Aviles from the Family Medical Emergency List to the restricted list.

Preview: Nationals at Padres

Washington Nationals (20-17) at San Diego Padres (19-18)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: -137, 126 TOTAL: 6.5

April seems like a distant memory to the Washington Nationals and star right fielder Bryce Harper, who is having a May to remember. Harper has powered the Nationals to 13 wins in their last 17 games, and they're one half-game back of the New York Mets in the NL East heading into Saturday’s matchup against the host San Diego Padres.

Harper leads the National League with 13 homers, including eight in his last nine games. The Nationals received a scare in Friday’s 10-0 rout of the Padres as Jayson Werth left the game after being hit on the left wrist with a pitch, but the left fielder’s X-rays were negative and he’ll be reevaluated on Saturday. While the Nationals rank fourth in the majors in runs scored at 4.86 per game, the Padres have been shut out in four of their last 11 games. San Diego will likely be without outfielder/first baseman Wil Myers (tendinitis) for the remainder of the series, but he could return to the starting lineup on Tuesday.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (3-3, 1.99 ERA) vs. Padres RH Andrew Cashner (1-6, 3.07)

Scherzer bounced back from a shaky outing against Miami by holding Arizona to one run in seven innings last Monday. Washington has scored a combined two runs in his three losses and 25 in his three victories. The 2013 AL Cy Young award winner faced the Padres on April 13, 2014 and struck out 10 but took the loss after allowing four runs in five innings.

Cashner has lost four consecutive starts despite posting a 3.33 ERA during that stretch. The Padres are 1-6 in his starts and the 28-year-old leads the majors with 10 unearned runs allowed. Cashner, who has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 21 straight starts at home, owns a 2-2 record and 3.76 ERA in nine career games (four starts) against Washington.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington placed RHP Doug Fister on the 15-day disabled list with forearm tightness and recalled RHP A.J. Cole from Triple-A Syracuse.

2. Padres C Derek Norris is 7-for-16 with a home run and six RBI against Washington, which drafted him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.

3. Washington RHP Casey Janssen (shoulder) could be activated from the disabled list as early as Sunday.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 16 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: 146, -158 TOTAL: 7.5

The Chicago White Sox vie for a season-high fourth consecutive victory when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Chicago began its six-game road trip with a loss at Milwaukee before completing the set with a pair of 4-2 triumphs and rallying for a 7-6 win over Oakland on Friday.

Adam LaRoche and Avisail Garcia highlighted a five-run seventh inning with back-to-back two-run doubles for the White Sox, who posted two three-game winning streaks last month. Oakland suffered its eighth loss in nine games as Jesse Hahn and three relievers were lit up in the seventh frame. Josh Phegley belted a solo homer in the fourth and Josh Reddick added a three-run triple later in the inning for the Athletics, who fell to 1-3 on their six-game homestand. Oakland is a major league-worst 13-24 overall and shares the worst home record in the American League (5-12) with Texas.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, WGN (Chicago), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH John Danks (1-3, 5.12 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jesse Chavez (1-3, 2.56)

Danks is coming off his best start of the season, a seven-inning effort against Cincinnati on Sunday in which he allowed just one run on six hits and three walks. The 30-year-old, who yielded at least three runs in each of his previous five outings this year, is 0-3 with a 7.82 ERA in three turns on the road. Danks has pitched well versus Oakland in his career, going 6-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 11 starts.

Chavez has alternated strong and subpar performances since joining the rotation and is just 1-3 over his four starts. Chavez is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in nine career appearances (one start) against the White Sox.

3. Oakland 2B/OF Ben Zobrist (knee surgery) participated in full workouts with the team Friday and should begin a rehab assignment soon.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez is thriving and that isn’t good news for the Boston Red Sox as they face the host Mariners in the third contest of a four-game set. Hernandez sports a tidy 6-0 mark on the season and he has always fared well against Boston by winning eight of 10 career decisions.

The teams have traded 2-1 victories in the first two games of the series with Seattle picking up the win Friday when Nelson Cruz had an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The decisive hit extended Cruz’s hitting streak to eight games and put his average at .420 in May.
