Questionman: If you don't mind my saying so, you don't meet my Average American expectations. You're short, overweight, near-sighted, balding and don't appear to be especially well-educated.
Average American: Well, excuse me! I'm the only me I can be. After all, the rest of the country is in charge of who I am. I'm just a victim of statistics.

Just look at the EU... They have to join forces just to compete!

Perhaps to match the regional size (read, resource base) of their competition?
Or would that be too simplistic a viewpoint?

Grantt,

This is representative of a problem with any political spectrum: Infighting.
In this forum, at least, regarding your attack on kaya, I would think you WOULDN'T bite the hand that hasn't made any attempt to cover your mouth.

jd,

I know that its probably a bastardized version of greek cuisine but...i like the gyro.

Who can bash the Greeks? The gents all but invented democracy!

i`m part greek....and it`s nothing to be proud of.....what happened to these great old civilizations that seem to have stopped evolving?.....an honest question...not a put down..

all i see is jealousy and sniping....like old women in a sewing circle....do you guys realize how witless this garbage sounds?....making wild generalizations about a society made up of people from all over the globe......the one true melting pot in this world....

this kind of thread is useless and just shows the utter resentment and envy rife around the world....as i said,if only the ussr had won the cold war....everybody would be happy....

c`mon guys...we can do better than name calling and ad hominem attacks on americans.....that makes it look like you have lost the debate...

and the debates here have usually been quite interesting....let`s try and keep it intellectually honest....keep the school girl silliness to a minimum

Are Americans too dumb to fry an egg? New egg warning label suggests we are

WASHINGTON, DC -- A new federal plan to require a cigarette-style health warning on egg cartons -- that's right: egg cartons! -- proves that government bureaucrats think Americans are too dumb to boil an egg.

And that's no yolk.

"The eggheads in Washington, DC have gone too far," charged Bill Winter, Director of Communications for the Libertarian Party. "This new regulation -- which assumes that Americans can't cook breakfast without instructions from the FDA -- shows what happens when bureaucrats' judgment has been fried, scrambled, and poached by too much power."

This month, the Food and Drug Administration announced that it wants to require all egg cartons to carry a new warning label, which will lecture consumers about the danger of improperly cooked eggs.

The label would read: "For your protection: Keep eggs refrigerated; cook eggs until yolks are firm; and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly."

The President's Council on Food Safety is also getting into the act: It has announced it will come up with its own "strategic plan" to control egg safety by November 1.

But Libertarians say the regulation has laid an egg.

"Think about the real message behind this warning label," said Winter. "Bureaucrats are, in essence, saying to the American people: 'You eat 67 billion eggs a year, but we can't trust you to put them in your refrigerator, or to cook them properly. So, with our new federally mandated warning label, we're going to nag you every time you pick up an egg carton. Why? Because you're too dumb to be trusted.' "

Ironically, the new warning comes at a time when food-borne illnesses caused by salmonella are falling: They declined by 44% from 1996 to 1998, thanks in large part to voluntary quality-control standards implemented by the egg industry.

And experts agree that eggs have never been particularly dangerous: While the average American eats 245 eggs annually, the odds of running into a spoiled egg is only one in 20,000. So, a typical consumer might encounter a dangerous egg once every 42 years.

But if bureaucrats can demand a warning label for a problem that might occur every 42 years, so can Libertarians, said Winter.

"We're concerned that bureaucrats may have missed some egg-related problems, so we've got some warning labels of our own to propose," he said. For example:

WARNING: Remove egg from shell before eating.

WARNING: Just say no to over easy.

WARNING: The Surgeon General has determined that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

And probably the most useful one, from the perspective of the Washington, DC crowd, said Winter:

WARNING: Don't throw these eggs at the bureaucrats and politicians who think Americans are too dumb to fry an egg.

Grantt, here are some traits and beliefs of an "average American" (me)
1) I think I live in the greatest country in the world.
2) I know that God created the universe and everything in it.
3) I think Andy Griffith is a great role model.
4) I am a college graduate and I read hundreds of books each year, but I am no more intelligent than a friend who didn't finish high school.
5) I love my wife and kids. I go to church on sunday. I bet on sports every day of the year. I love cheap beer. And I can't seem to get as much sex as I think I should.
5) I think that I am ultimately responsible for my own well-being and that of my family.
6) I think these people are idiots: Dennis Rodman, Susan Surandon, Tim Robbins, Mike Brown (Bengals owner), and Bill Clinton.
7) I think it's a shame that prayer and the Ten Commandments are banned in the schools, but that's ok because it's not the job of public education to teach my kids morals.
8) I think that liberals have done a fantastic job of re-inventing defintions of right and wrong, beginning with Roe v Wade.
9) I think that the biggest problems in America today are the result of plain old shitty parents. Parents that are too selfish and lazy to care for their children or give them any guidance, discipline, or direction.
10) I think that even the Democrats must admit that George W. Bush has some serious balls.
11) I own a handgun, but have never used it and probably won't. And I own a fist, but have never hit anyone. But Grantt, I could probably punch you and enjoy doing so.

Grantt, here are some traits and beliefs of an "average American" (me)
1) I think I live in the greatest country in the world. (You would be wrong)
2) I know that God created the universe and everything in it. (wrong again unless you have something you can show me to prove it)
3) I think Andy Griffith is a great role model.(Me too)
4) I am a college graduate and I read hundreds of books each year, but I am no more intelligent than a friend who didn't finish high school. (this statement implies you read a book every day and a half so it's not true. So I would agree that you are no more intelligent than a high school drop out)
5) I love my wife and kids. I go to church on sunday. I bet on sports every day of the year. I love cheap beer. And I can't seem to get as much sex as I think I should. (stop wasting your Sundays and spend more quality time with your family)
5) I think that I am ultimately responsible for my own well being and that of my family. (true)
6) I think these people are idiots: Dennis Rodman, Susan Surandon, Tim Robbins, Mike Brown (Bengals owner), and Bill Clinton. (Why Susan Surandon, Tim Robbins)
7) I think it's a shame that prayer and the Ten Commandments are banned in the schools, but that's ok because it's not the job of public education to teach my kids morals. (Stop using religion as a crutch)
8) I think that liberals have done a fantastic job of re-inventing defintions of right and wrong, beginning with Roe v Wade. (so your pleased that the U.S. executes retarded people, Nice)
9) I think that the biggest problems in America today are the result of plain old shitty parents. Parents that are too selfish and lazy to care for their children or give them any guidance, discipline, or direction. (partially, also poor education standards and some horribly run down ill equipped schools, no safety net to speak of for the less fortunate, terrible maternity leave, forcing mothers to abandon their children to rush back to work.)
10) I think that even the Democrats must admit that George W. Bush has some serious balls. (You are aware that Iraq has no WMD or even a single plane that was used in defending themselves don't you. I hardly call this a brave move. Like most people I call this a slaughter. Shooting apples in a barrel)
11) I own a handgun, but have never used it and probably won't. And I own a fist, but have never hit anyone. But Grantt, I could probably punch you and enjoy doing so. (you would need the gun I'm afraid, I don't loose to fat sissies that have never used there fists before. Lets just say you would be like Iraq in this case and I would be the ballsy hero beating up the fat dumb guy) In my country I would be frowned upon for taking advantage of your weakness, but hey in this case we can go with your demented beliefs making me a hero for knocking around a much lesser opponent.

grantt....where are you from(or what)?....i`ve never seen you identify the source of all this bias and hatred...just curious...you aren`t ashamed to provide this info.....are you?

I'm sorry but a person with a degree in higher education is more likely to pursue actions which require critical thinking skills.
The US have a very good higher education system. On the other hand, the elementary and high school levels are in absolute shambles. They rank very low on a world wide level.
How then, can you say that a high school graduate has the same level of intelligence as a college grad.?

Radiofree,
You missed my point about education and intelligence. I'm talking about learning valuable life lessons from a high school dropout who has worked in my family's business since I was 15 years old. After finishing college and working for 10+ years, I realize that the all the knowledge that I needed for success had already been shown to me by a seemingly simple man. (work hard, make no excuses, loyalty, honesty, humility, time management, and much more). Combine these things with a good dose of common sense and you are well on your way to success. You just don't learn these things in college. Sure, you might learn to string a bunch of big words together, but that doesn't really benefit most of us in any way. It just makes you appear to be a bit wiser when you conduct an argument with a typewriter.

FAT DUMB GUY?? REALLY GRANTT??

I'm actually pretty fit. I've never been in a fight, I guess, because I've never provoked anyone else. And no one has ever provoked me. I've never started a fight and never had to back down from one either. But if I should ever be in "YOUR COUNTRY", maybe I could look you up. Do they have "steel cages" in YOUR COUNTRY? Cause, you see, I watch a lot of raslin and I've been lookin to try some of them fancy moves if I could only find a villain.
You must be real proud of your country, since you don't show any inclination to reveal it. Is it Ohio? Nope, that's wrong. It's people from Ohio who think that Kentuckians are from another country. I'll bet that you are a man without a nation.
