JD,not sure about that one.Not quite sure what would constitute an average American.Probably just pissed me off because Grantt said it.Its the old thing,I can bad mouth my country but one else can.I do know that I have spent many an hour in bars in blue collar areas of the US,and am usually surprised by the degree of awareness.I usually don't agree with their opinions, but at least they have one.

I'm not going to argue the dimwittedness of Americans.

But you have to agree it looks bad when the France protestors (who represent a TINY fraction of America) start boycotting things like French Fries and Nestle because they sound French.

agreed fsb. But grantt is incorrect in his statement. There are several examples (I posted the article here the other day under the thread, careful what you boycott) in this age of globalization that are located in France, but US owned and vice versa.

As for the idiots boycotting french fries, it will probably cause the startling trend of US obesity (33% by recent reports) to decrease.

i am obviously not claiming americans are a nation of dimwits, but i do feel that the whatever constitutes the average middle class american is the most succesfully propagandised citizen in the world, and reckons good cuisine means burgers, macdonalds, and t-bones, good music being country or some rock garbage for twenty somethings, politics is either right wing or ultra right wing, personal safety and security equals a loaded gun, the death penalty is actually mercy killing, and that corporate leaders (aka dealers) are actually minding the public good and not their private greed.

Other than that blue collar workers are probably more aware than middle class counterparts, as is the case in europe, the working class, right or wrong, do have an opinion beyond materialistic stupor of the middle classes.

There are a lot of things american i like and admire, the "average", as loose as that term is, american not being one of them.

point taken, jd...

But how bad is the average american? Is he as bad as the media claims he is, i.e., is he has bad as TV makes him SEEM?

Believe that exported lie and the whole liberal media myth seems to be true. Nevertheless, in many cases the american has taken on traits that were never inherant to being "american", among these being various stereotypes (and the tendency to stereotype): the dumb jock, the nerd, the "goth", the yuppie, the hippie.

i see what you mean radio, but isnt this an example of a culture and society self inflicting wounds? That the coy middle class artifact known as a tv set in the 50s would turn into the gargantuan monster it is today, ripping apart the very societal fabric it claims to protect and enhance, and thinnning out a much richer culture to stereotypical one dimensional thinking and living? What i am saying is that admittedly america (and the rest of the world) have taken the wrong turn in terms of certain cultural traits of theirs, and "anti globalization" protesters do have a point in saying that in this ultra capitalist future projected by the super powers, some consideration has got to be given to local cultures and ways of life, so as not to let the almight buck (power, greed etc.) even out the differences between peoples, condemning the world to a huge melting pot of "cultures" where nothing is authentic and everything can be stereotyped, bought and sold.

btw, the most interesting americans i ve met are those who ve lived a fair share of time abroad, and most of them out of choice not circumstance.

btw, i think the "average" american is much better than what the media power would WANT him to be

Judge--I have to agree with you as far as not knowing what these obviously more intelligent posters mean by "average American". I will note that when some posters (myself included) have tried to blow red-white-&-Blue smoke up our asses and extoll the virtues of being American, others have quickly reminded us of the melting pot that America is, with citizens from all over. When someone talks about a U.S. technology or invention, they quickly remind us of the "real" nationality of the inventor, even though the inventor may have been naturalized. I agree with them. America is a reflection of the world at large. More so than any other nation in the world. To that end, I think that to say an "average American" is a nitwit, is a direct reflection of one's own idiocy. An inferiority complex is a powerful thing. Some kids never get over having their lunch money stolen, and have to lash out as best they can.

First of all, inferiority complex is dated psychojargon of the 1930's, as well as freudian childhood trauma analysis.

Even if america is a melting pot, americans are certainly much more alike with each other, than with most europians, sharing a common political structure and power mechanisms, a common historical past, and as far as same classes go, same material conditions. That's enought to categorise an average middle class american by and and large, and although nitwit is admittedly kinda harsh, i think most people would agree that this average middle class american is largely misinformed and not very knowledgeable when it comes to politics, history, culture, cuisine, art, etc. etc. to name a few, compared to the average middle class europian. I mean no Europian would boycott french fries, thinking they actually were french, not knowing that potatoes actually originated from America, lol.

With out a doubt, the funniest comments I read here, are from europeans.....who feel they "know" what Americans are like.

That shits priceless.

How about getting your head out of a history book, turn of the re-run of " BabeWatch ", and actually spend a few years here ?...THEN make an informed comment.

Other wise...it's just hot air.

yeah well, i ve met a lot of americans in my lifetime, have spend a few months on vacations in the states from Atlanta, to N.J. to New York, and i ve got friends who ve lived in the states for some time.

They're jealous... In 200 short years the USA has surpassed them in everything important.

For instance, Jack.....

I've seen the movie " Big Fat Greek Wedding ".....

I love big fat Green olives...

I quite frequently eat lunch at a little place called " Ya Ya's Kitchen "

One of my best friends last name is Popodopolis

I can drink Oozo like a fish.

....I'll stop there for now.

At this point am I qualified to comment on life in Greece, and what the average Greek is like ?
