Obama: Kids Should Learn Spanish

I'd say yes to encouraging school kids to learn Spanish, any knowledge is good to have.

Spanish is the main 2nd language of the US, so knowing it will be a plus to a youngster.

Spanish would serve me better than the French I took ( and mostly forgot) in HS. The Spanish I know ( not a lot), was mainly learned at construction sites in Ca and Nv.

I'm trilingual and think this is a crock of horseshit (as do my parents and grandparents who came over here from Europe on a boat without knowing a word of English...no one catered to them and tried to learn their languages because they were in a place where ENGLISH is spoken).

Well, which is it? Should we teach them Spanish or French? Maybe we should teach them Chinese (as someone above pointed out), or perhaps Arabic. Immigrants come from around the world to live in America. Perhaps Obama doesn’t realize this, but they don’t all speak Spanish. If our children have to learn foreign languages so that every single immigrant feels at home here, then we’d better plan on keeping them in school for about 40 years.

Also, Obama’s argument here makes no sense. He’s complaining that Americans don’t speak the native language when we visit Europe, but that we don’t speak the immigrant language when people move to the United States. With that argument, shouldn’t we expect Europeans to speak English when we travel there?

JD, it's actually even worse than you suggested.

Using his logic, we should expect Europeans to speak English when we move there, and live there, and raise our families there, not just when we travel there.

yea. english, 50 percent spanish, i could make it spanish speaking countries, not native level though, german. dad knows german, arabic, english, spanish, french.

i wanted him to teach me arabic but i changed my mind since i decided against pursuing a government career. cia is paying 30k bonuses to arab speaking americans.

Since you dislike the USA so much add these to your list along with Canada. I’ll bet the waiting list isn’t very long.

I think Congress should earmark a few billion and offer English courses throughout Mexico and Central America.

Then, at least illegals would already be functional English speakers when they arrive.

I heartily agree with this forecast and believe the Exodus will only begin in the next 10 years. It will continue over a 20 to 40 year period led mainly by people currently living in the northern half of USA in regions which formerly hopped thanks to steel and automotive industries - to name but two industries which will never again contribute the same level of economic opportunity for Americans living in those regions.

That was a great movie, especially the part where there were English subtitles and he just said two words in Chinese and then waited for about 7 lines of subtitles to scroll by. I don't remember laughing so hard since.
