Odell Beckham leaves Giants practice early after colliding with teammate.

CotQzV1UIAA2b9v.jpg

Odell Beckham Jr. left the practice field early Sunday after suffering "a cut or two" to his leg after after colliding with teammate Janoris Jenkins while attempting to make a catch, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said.
"He's probably going to be sore for a couple days," McAdoo told reporters after practice. The star receiver landed awkwardly going up for a deep ball and required attention from trainers for a few minutes after. Beckham stayed on the field for a while, walking gingerly on his left leg. He was spotted on the sideline grabbing his ankle area, and despite trying to jog it off, the Giants' superstar eventually rode a cart back into the team's facility before the practice's conclusion.

Sammy Watkins passes conditioning test, still on PUP.

Sammy Watkins is close to being unleashed in Buffalo.
After undergoing offseason foot surgery, the Bills wideout has passed his obligatory conditioning test, per Tom Pelissero of USA Today.
Watkins opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list -- and he remains on that list for now -- but the third-year pass-catcher has been running for weeks and promised earlier this month to be "back on top soon."

Despite the positive development, Watkins isn't quite ready for the practice field. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the team is exercising caution before taking him off the PUP list, according to a source informed of his status.
Watkins broke a small bone in his foot this offseason, prompting the receiver to go under the knife in late April. The Bills are optimistic about his health, though, with one team source telling ESPN's Josina Anderson: "We are going to break Sammy in slowly (and) turn him loose in a week."

Along those line, coach Rex Ryan on Sunday gushed about the overall health of his roster, telling Pelissero: "If we were playing the Super Bowl tomorrow, they'd probably all be out there."
For Buffalo to stand a chance in the AFC East, Watkins must play a major role on offense. After hauling in 60 catches for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns last season, there's no reason to believe he can't top those numbers in 2016, as long as he stays healthy.

J.J. Watt: I can't put a solid start date on my return.

Still stashed away on the Houston Texans' physically unable to perform list, J.J. Watt acknowledged Sunday that he isn't certain when he'll return from back surgery.
"I can't put a solid start date on when I can play. I don't plan on missing my first game, but I can't promise it," Watt said, per the team's Twitter account. "I'm doing everything I can to protect my body, but the older I get, the more I realize you have to be smart."
Said Watt: "I feel good. My body feels good. It is just a matter of listening to them (the doctors). I'll do whatever they tell me to do."

Coach Bill O'Brien told reporters Sunday that Watt is "on the right track," but the Texans aren't about to rush the three-time Defensive Player of the Year back onto the field after he underwent surgery earlier this month to repair a herniated disc.
The team was initially hopeful that Watt would be ready for the start of the regular season, but NFL Media's Mike Garafolo noted that the All-Pro defensive end's recovery could take as long as 10 weeks. Back injuries, bottom line, are tough to predict.

As Chris Wesseling noted Saturday, Houston's roster is currently missing a pair of top-20 players with Watt on the mend and star wideout DeAndre Hopkins staging a surprise holdout. The Texans can't be viewed as a legitimate Super Bowl threat until both players are back in action.

Patriots, Rob Gronkowski discussing new contract.

Are the Patriots preparing to furnish the most talented tight end in football with a brand new contract?
NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported Sunday that Rob Gronkowski's agents, Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, are working with the team on a new deal, according to a source informed of the negotiations. Both agents were on hand for Sunday's Patriots practice, but Garafolo noted that a new contract is not imminent at this time.

Gronkowski is currently playing under the eight-year, $55.23 million pact he signed in 2012. New England in March picked up the 27-year-old tight end's $10 million option, which essentially keeps Gronk locked in at a team-friendly price through 2019. The All-Pro pass-catcher went out of his way this offseason to grumble about his affordable price tag:
Gronkowski is a top-five, game-changing talent on offense and New England's most dangerous playmaker. He's worth far more cash than he's making and the Patriots know it.

Tre Mason missing from Los Angeles Rams camp.

Has Tre Mason played his last down for the Rams?
The backup running back was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list Saturday after failing to show for the start of training camp.
Mason did not participate in Los Angeles' offseason program. Coach Jeff Fisher attributed his absence to "personal reasons."
The 22-year-old tailback was arrested in March on drug and traffic charges and has had five separate incidents with police over the past four months. Fisher acknowledged in June that the Rams "have to prepare ourselves that Tre's not going to be here."

Fisher revealed Saturday that Mason has broken off communications with the team:
TMZ Sports reported earlier this week that Mason's family is "extremely concerned" about his mental health, citing a "string of bizarre behavior and angry outbursts."

Mason was viewed as a nucleus player on the Rams offense after earning a spot on the 2014 All-Rookie team. Reduced to a sidekick role following the addition of franchise back Todd Gurley, Mason managed a disappointing 2.8 yards per on 75 carries last season.
While it's fair to wonder if the Rams will cut ties with Mason, his personal well-being is the chief concern.

Texans' DeAndre Hopkins ending holdout.

CotyXGfWAAA2Uxi.jpg

DeAndre Hopkins is returning to the Houston Texans.
One day after choosing not to report to training camp, the star wideout is ending his brief holdout, a source close to the player told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Hopkins on Sunday announced his change of heart through a statement:
With two years left on his rookie contract, Hopkins is slated to make just $1 million in base salary this season. He's obviously unhappy with his situation, but hoping that a team-first approach will help him land a new pact in time.

Texans general manager Rick Smith, though, made it crystal clear that Houston didn't plan to cave into any demands from the Hopkins camp. Holding out was always a long-shot strategy, but the wideout will eventually be paid for what he is -- one of the premier pass-catchers in the NFL.
In just his third season, Hopkins in 2015 tallied a whopping 31.6 percent of the team's passing targets, ripping through secondaries for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns off 111 grabs.

Nobody can argue that his puny base salary does nothing to reflect his immense value. Hopkins put up those titanic numbers playing with a cavalcade of subpar passers.
While Brock Osweiler still has plenty to prove under center, having Hopkins back on the field gives this J.J. Watt-less Texans team a much better chance to compete in the AFC South.
It's also another reminder that holdouts rarely work out for players.

Niners' Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert to split reps.

San Francisco's quarterback competition has officially begun.
Niners coach Chip Kelly told reporters on Sunday that Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert will divide first-team reps evenly.
"We are going to split it right down the middle. I think we've got 24 reps today with the ones," Kelly said. "So (Colin Kaepernick) and Blaine (Gabbert) will split it right down the middle with the ones and twos."

There were rumblings this offseason that Gabbert was the leader in the clubhouse. During OTAs Gabbert took control of the offense and even showed signs of leadership while Kaepernick recovered from various ailments. A stark contrast for a QB who was ran out of Jacksonville after three atrocious seasons.
Kaepernick, who underwent offseason right thumb and his left knee in surgeries in January after previously having left shoulder surgery in November, has the skillset that would seem to be ideal in Kelly's offense. Yet the Nevada product has regressed since the 49ers lost to Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII and now finds himself in a rather grotesque QB battle.

Back in 2012, it would be laughable to consider the two quarterbacks being locked in a dead heat. Although times have changed four years later, and Kelly confirmed that there's no timetable to name a 49ers starting quarterback.
"Sometimes if you put a preconceived date on it it's not fair and I've been in them before. I just think they express themselves in how they express themselves," Kelly said when asked about naming a starting QB.

"Obviously you'd like to get it done sooner rather than later. But you don't want to get it done sooner and make the wrong decision. I think how we train and what we do on the practice fields and obviously the opportunity to play in preseason games will give us a real good indication; we hope as we head into the regular season."
It's going to be interesting to watch this quarterback competition unfold to say the least.

Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott met the media after Sunday's practice. He would not comment on the domestic violence allegations. Three times Elliott said, "I'm not going to comment on anything regarding any legal matters but I'm glad to talk about football." The Columbus, Ohio, prosecutor's office has opened an investigation regarding the allegations made by an ex-girlfriend and the NFL is looking into the matter through its personal conduct policy.

RB Matt Forte, one of the Jets' big off-season additions, still hasn't practiced because of a hamstring injury. Forte called it a "minor" pull, saying it occurred while training before camp started. He will take a deliberate approach, not wanting to rush back and re-injure it. He's one of five starters who reported to camp with pre-existing injuries -- CB Darrelle Revis (wrist), DE Mo Wilkerson (leg), LG James Carpenter (hamstring) and RT Breno Giacomini (back). None of them are practicing.

In his first field goal attempts during team drills at Vikings training camp, Blair Walsh hit all eight of his attempts. The fifth-year kicker, whose 27-yard miss in the Vikings' wild card loss to the Seahawks became one of the indelible images of the playoffs, hit kicks ranging from 29 to 41 yards on Sunday.
