We've all heard the term "betting against the public" because having access to untainted bookie data $$$/% back in the day was golden, both psychologically and mathematically. If you were a bookie and knew how to use that info to your advantage shading your numbers, it WAS a license to print money.
Hence the advent of offshore "square" books...like Bowmans, SIA, Big Book, Bodog, Intertops..where it wasn't uncommon to pick off NFL "public" favorites as much as 1.5-2 pts off the market mean. Although I will say monetizing those market inefficiencies back then scouring for "bad numbers" took the 'fun' out of the sport.
