Autopista Caldera from Escazu to Santa Ana isn't flat. It's much better than it used to be, but you get up around 120Kph and you have serious vibration on the wheels, it's annoying. Anyone not experience that?

I know this is a bit old but I had to comment. Fuck Jack sorry to hear about your dads car but i'm glad to hear he is ok.

For anyone that actually took notice to the pictures, the accident was on the new highway. Those who state that 140 kph is stupid, they have obviously NEVER EVER driven a performance car and making such comments is IGNORANT.

As for the insurance my dad tried to insure a Porchse that was rebuilt with tons and tons of money into it. INS simply said no they wouldn't insure that car. INS probably wouldn't even insure the Ferrari, even if Jack's dad wanted to and like Jack says too much money anyway. In 2 years you can have another Ferrari.

There was NO tail gating here it was simply a FUCKING MORON that decided to STOP on the FUCKING HIGHWAY. I have ALMOST crashed because of the same thing. I was lucky enough to not be driving after dark or in rain. I rode a motorcycle for many years and for that reason i'm fairly religious about driving very carefully when it starts raining. That oil and shit Jack talks about comes out of the road as soon as it starts raining and stays for the first 30 minutes while raining making the road VERY slippery. I probably wouldn't have been driving quick in those conditions but everyone to their own.

The problem is 100% the education of the drivers in this country. They are fucking morons. They don't think ahead making drastic last minute reactions on busy roads (or stopping) in the middle of the road (like the idiots do all the time from the left lane to get onto the turn-off to Pavas from Escazu -> San Jose).

I always think it would be nice if the cops started stopping them but then I think if they did that then I probably wouldn't be able to speed anymore because they'd be fairly proficient at their job.

140 kph IS stupid HERE (which is the point of this post) for several reasons of one which you CLEARLY state but just to list a few

a) driving at 140 kph IS stupid because you can encounter a cow/a motorcycle stopped/ a pothole / a guy trying to cross the expressway on foot with ZERO notice, it doesnt matter how awesome the brakes are etc, physics has limits to everything and simply 'the faster you go the longer it takes to stop

b) driving at 140 kph is ALSO stupid because all drivers are not created equal, some have better eyes and some have better reflexes and some have more experience driving under certain conditions

c) driving at 140 kph is ALSO stupid because in an accident ......it is possible that they determine how fast you were going and therefore its not going to play very well in court if you happen to kill someone and there is doubt at who is at fault, same can be said about insurance, and simply put, with the new transit law.......140 kph will 'probably' cause some big legal issues

limits exist for several reasons some of which are simply because of the physics of the road (inclination/radio of curvature of a turn etc etc)

I've driven at 140 kph. I am sure we have gazillion posters that will say the same thing.....easily done in many interstates or autobahns....simply everyone is going as fast or faster.....their roads are MUCH different than ours, so are the drivers....so are the pedestrians (none existent in an interstate/autobahn)......etc.

In summary, don't do 140 kph here (or 130....)

If the cops would (somehow .......) enforce every single transit law in here.....we would still be screwed because there is not enough space for all the cars that we have.

Well they tell you when you go to a race track to get your racing license that you should never drive beyond your limits. 140 kph on the new highway realistically is not that fast in the right conditions. I've hit 300 kph (the factory set max on sport bikes) on a motorcycle and believe me that was fast (that wasn't here).

The new road is nice and wide making it very easy to see upcoming problems in the right conditions. As you say it's totally driver dependent which I would entirely agree with but aside from being driver dependent it's also condition dependent. As I stated I probably would not drive at that speed in those conditions.

I know all to well the dangers on the streets here as I have encountered everything from Pot Holes to a drunk IDIOT walking in the MIDDLE of the new highway on the dotted line between the two lanes coming from Santa Ana to Escazu in the middle of the night.

And you can't deny the fact that there is a major lack of driver education here. In reality speed or conditions aside that is what caused the accident.

You're talking about irresponsible drivers and yet you don't find it bad at all to drive 50kph over the speed limit, on top of that when it's wet and slippery (by the way asshole we don't have to be subscribed to FAST AND THE FURIOUS WEEKLY to know it's dangerous on the road when it starts raining). Any asshole that takes the driving test to get a license knows that cause it's in every driving manual in the world you dumb fuck. Maybe one day you will grow up and realize the speed limit is there for a reason. When you see enough senseless deaths on the road or when something tragic happens to you or your family related to irresponsible speeding on public roads you might change your perspective and quit being such a fucking moron.
