No rule but there used to be something called sportsmanship. If an opponent was clearly beat you didn't keep the starters in and try to run up the score. At least when I played back in the 60's. Of course there were a few coaches back then that didn't mind embarrassing opponents even before the BCS days.

Considering that 99.99% of coaches run vanilla plays up 30 in the 4th qtr, you look like a complete jackass (and you piss off other coaches/voters/etc) when you try to run up the score. Not to mention potential injuries, etc...
Try running a flea flicker up 50 with 3 minutes left, and see how many votes you lose when the poll comes out...

I took OU in 3 different bets, along with the 2H over of 34, so I actually was rooting for Stoops to show his ass again, as I needed the score. Funny thing is, I knew he was gonna do it. It's what he's done all year. Mack and Texas could've done this against

B) Missouri
C) Kansas
D) Texas A&M

Stoops is classless and has no respect throughout college football. It's as simple as that. The only people that won't agree are the Sooner fans. If that's what football has come to these days, we want no part of it. Those are the exact words Mack has used and will continue to use. All those points are against 3rd and 4th teamers anyhow. I don't argue that it probably pisses some coaches off (I'm sure there are a lot of coaches however that would understand it's their job to stop them), but to me that's too damn bad. You don't want my team to score anymore? Try stopping us then. Why win by 30 when I feel my team is 50 points better? Yes, it could hurt you potentially in the coaches vote if they are really that pissed (they shouldn't vote if that's how they determine their vote though), but it could also potentially HELP you imo. Just like Leach voted OU #1 after they hammered his team. If you get embarrassed by a team you might feel inclined to vote them higher than the consensus because you want to be able to say we got killed because that team is so damn good, not because we suck so damn much.
As far as I'm concerned you run plays to score until the game is over. The only time I'd stop trying to score on offense is when you can kneel out the game. I'd probably bring in backups at some point, but I'd still be trying my best to score points with them, especially in college where your backups are just usually future starters.

there is no such thing as running it up in any sort of championship game or game with legitimate stakes.
it is, however, bush to run it up on overmatched teams during non-conference or even in conference play. shit like running it up on baylor or whatever is lame.
