Yes, the virus is so suppressed a test for the virus might miss it - however, he has the antibodies proving he has the virus.

There is no cure for HIV/Aids, but there are drugs that can slow it down. Magic is not the only person that has tested positive and then later shown no signs of the virus.

Its suspected that Magic has a CCR5 mutation on his gp120 gene. Its a gene in your body where people will be HIV+ but the virus won't progress to AIDS. So basicly he just has a virus in his body similar to how Journey has Herpes.

ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

very interesting stuff.

Did not know that.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't know I had Herpes either.

One of his last magic moments that incredible performance in the NBA All Star game, remember he knocked down several long 3 pointers, and capped it off by nailing the final shot...it was one of those surreal moments that is inexplcable .

I guess if Karl Malone hadn't complained Magic may have played a few more seasons,,,also one of the reasons he's so much heavier he lifts weights a lot to keep his strength up, his legs are pretty skinny though, he's all upper body.

If that is true, it means one of 2 things.

A) THERE IS A 100% cure that most people dont have access to
B) Never had it in the first place.

Chop,
Your logic is flawed! He is HIV+ but he has never had an active case of AIDS....big difference. Whether or not it is the anti-viral medication he is taking that is preventing the virus from causing an active case of AIDS is unknown. He may just have an immune system that is able to fight off the HIV, but probably it is a combination of the two. One thing is certain....he is a lucky man!

Good stuff. This confirms Journeymans post.

I guess its safe to say he does not have HIV right now.

whether or not he had it before is up for debate.

But some of you posters make some valid points, im leaning towards him once having a mild case of HIV.

Is there any such thing as a mild case of HIV?

Of course not - this borders on moronic - it's like being mildly pregnant.

Journey has herpes but other that that big lump (similar to a giant pimple) on his lip....you would never know it. Same with Magic. Interesting.

Classic thread so I thought I would contribute.

In September 1991, just before Johnson learned he had HIV, he married longtime friend Earletha "Cookie" Kelly. They had a son in 1993 and adopted a daughter in 1995. Johnson also had a son from another relationship who spent the summers with him. Johnson continued to take medicine, eat right, and exercise. As recently as September 2002, his doctors said he is free of AIDS symptoms. Doctors credit Johnson's exercise habits and his use of powerful drugs; Johnson's wife Cookie has credited God, stating, "The Lord has definitely healed Earvin. Doctors think it's the medicine. We claim it in the name of Jesus."

I had to comment on that one....I know what Chop is implying though... But more than anything MAgic has the very best care , the money for the best doctors and treatment and was in the ultimate shape when this happened to him, his odds of staying on top of it are much greater than most....It is a little odd that he doesn't talk/educate more about it though.

I wonder just how many athletes have it now and have not said anything.

How could he "deposit the seed", so to speak, to impregnate his wife without risking passing the disease on to her?

If magic does have HIV, it sends out a bad message. It almost makes HIV seem not nearly as dangerous as once thought.

It will certainly make people say to themselves, well if magic can live a normal life with HIV, whats the big deal?

I have already started to come across this attitude alot in the last few years.

The word HIV does not scare people like it used to, partly MAGIC is to blame for that.

The chances of any of his old partners being postitive are extremely slim - obviously, there is a chain some where.
