Spain vs. USA
women under 17
10am Sunday
over 140.5

The gold medal game is set for Sunday morning. The USA starts slowly and then plays catch up. Their last two games ended with 143 with Canada (the teams combined to shoot 4/30 from the 3-point line) and 157 with Australia. The USA was 31-93 and 32-94 from the field in these games. They also played a fast paced game with South Korea that ended 131-89 (220 points). Spain was sandbagging and tried to avoid the USA until the finals.

Spain played Japan twice. They lost 83-79 (162) and won 91-62 (153). Spain did play some ugly (low scoring) games against other teams like Italy, Netherlands, Brazil and Turkey. The USA played low scoring games with Italy, Mali and Belgium. Spain has Romero, Quevedo, Lizarazn, Pujol and Rodriguez who can score. Can they put up some points vs. the United States of America?

I thought the over/under should be 147.5 in this game so we get value at 140.5. Hopefully, both teams can make some 3's and free throws. It will be a fast paced game with plenty of opportunities for points. Look for Diamond Deshields to lead the way.

All we need is an 81-61 game to get an over. GL!

over 140.5

Lost this pick as USA won 75-62. Spain/Spam only shot about 26% and had some cold spells where they went 5 minutes without scoring. I usually look for unders in women's basketball and got burned.

Italy at Portugal
Euro Qualifier
Thursday (August 30, 2012)
over 142

These two played a 97-45 (142 points) game in Italy. In their 4 games Italy has scored 97, 84, 78 and 63 points. Portugal has scored 67 at home vs. Czech and 62 at Turkey. They did just play a 82-75 (157) game with Belarus at home. The game with Italy will be played on a small court in Coimbra.

Portugal is a 15.5 point underdog at home and is led by Fernandez (19 points is his high game), Silva (20), Fonseca (15), and Santos (14). Gomes and Barrosa can score too. Portugal did make 11 3-pointers in a recent game.

Hopefully, we can get a game in the mid-140's and over 142.

These two already played at Iceland about two weeks ago and Serbia won 91-78. Serbia was big favorites and allowed the home team to cover in the 4th.

Serbia is off a double digit loss at Israel in which they allowed 89 points. In their two home (Euro Qualifier) games the totals reached 151 and 144 points. I expect Serbia to jump ahead and play subs in the 4th. Serbia is favored by over 30 points.

This game is set for 2:30pm eastern and most books are carrying lines.

Czech Republic vs Portugal
2pm (September 5, 2012)
Euro Qualifier
pick: Portugal +15

Portugal is 0-5 while Czech Republic has just 2 losses. Portugal lost their opener badly but the other games have been respectable. They can get points from Fernandez, Jaime Silva, Gomes, Cetin and Fonseca. Czech won the game at Portugal by 74-67. I think we see a game in the 80-70 range as Portugal likes to play solid defense and use up lots of clock. GL!

Tough loss at 90-71. Portugal cut it 8 in the third but in the 4th they played like portu-GALS.

Austria at Croatia
Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2012)
Austria +16.5

The line was 20.5 but has dropped a few points. Croatia is undefeated but won many close games, not including big wins against Cyprus. They did beat Hungary by 24 points but the others:

beat Ukraine by 1 and 4 points
beat Hungary by 4 in other meeting
won at Austria by 7

Austria is 3-4 and the only team in this group still fighting to qualify:

"They (Austria) are the only remaining interested party in this group. Their chances of qualifying as one of the four best third-place teams though are slim. They need to win in Croatia, preferably by a wide margin to improve on their current 1.031 goal average, and hope that a host of other results goes their way so that there are at least two other third-place teams with the same record and a worse goal average when the dust settles."

Austria games:

won by 23 in OT
lost 4 Ukraine
lost 6 Hungary
lost 7 Croatia
won by 25 Cyprus
lost 11 Ukraine
won by 16 Hungary

Austria is led by Mahalbasic (21 points, 6 rb's in first game), Schreiner and Detrick.

Hopefully, Austria can stay within 16 and cover the big number.

Philippines vs. Uzbekistan
2012 Asia Cup
1am Sunday (Sept. 16, 2012)
pick: Uzbekistan +33.5 (Pinnacle)

The Philippines just beat Lebanon as 5 point underdogs. Marcus Douthit stepped up and played well inside as he had over 20 points and 15 rebounds. The team only made 2 3-pointers in a 78-68 win. In their first game they lost to China 71-68 as they were outrebounded 58-31. The Phillipines should have a letdown after a big win.

Uzbekistan has played one game and that was a 20-point win over Macau. They outrebounded them 52-22 and were led by Alexander Kozlov with 24 points and 15 rb's. Denisov had 19 points. Macau got into the tournament after Korea dropped out.

This game is less than a 24 hour turnaround. The Philippines should be able to win and then play Macau and be 3-1 by Monday. It is difficult to tell how well Ezbekistan will play but they should be able to stay within 30 points vs. a smallish team (not including Douthit).

Hopefully, we see a 90-64 type of game where the underdog is within 26 points. GL!

Tough loss as it ends 85-50. Uzbekistan only scored 5 points in the second quarter against the Filipinos................

China vs. Macau China
9:30pm eastern
under 156.5

Macau is the worst team in the tournament as they replaced Korea. They are 0-3 and will play India for last place in a few days. China is 2-1 and just beat Uzbekistan by 60 points. The China scores have reached 139, 158 and 154 points. Macau scores:

Lebanon 120-51 (171) opening game with fresh legs
Uzb 81-61 (142)
Phil 98-46 (144) 15-5 final quarter

Macau has Lao Fu who can score as he had 21 points in one game. They did shoot 3/30 3-pointers vs. the Phillipines, who rested Marcus Douthit most of the time.

China is favored by 57.5 points. Can the Chinese cover the large spread after winning by 60 yesterday? They will win easily to finish 3-1 and move on to the next round. This is the 4th game for both and Macau is not a good offensive team. I am guessing we see a 100-50 type of game that stays under. I have seen lines at Pinnacle and bet365. GL!
