USA vs. Angola
women's Olympics
5:15pm Monday (July 30, 2012)

pick: USA -13.5 (1st quarter)

I think the USA women jump ahead by 15 to 20 on Monday. On Saturday there were plenty of nerves as they got off to a slow start against Croatia. After a day of rest and getting used to the surroundings I expect to see Geno Ariemma's squad play better against Angola, who fell behind 21-8 to Turkey on Saturday. Back in 2008, Angola was down by 14 to Latvia and down 15 to the Czech Republic after one period in the FIBA tournament.

My guess is the USA gets points from Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker, Maya Moore, Angel McCoughtry, Simone Augustus and Diana Taurasi and jumps ahead 25-8 after one quarter.

Russia vs. Great Britain
Men's Olympics BB
3pm eastern Sunday
Russia -11.5

All of the Russian starters are 6'6" or taller and led by former Utah Jazz player Andre Kirilenko. They also have Timothy Mozgov, Shved and Khryapa, and are well coached by David Blatt, a former Ivy Leaguer from the USA ("You can't spell RUSSIA without U-S-A.)

Great Britain is the host team and that is how they qualified. Blatt was upset about this and the Russians had to travel to the USA and South America to qualify.

Great Britain is led by Luol Deng, Eric Boateng, Andrew Lawrence and Pops Bensa. They have been erratic in their games and had several key players injured and not playing such as a 20+ point loss to Belgium. They did lose to the USA by 40 points.

Russia did beat Lithuana by 101-79 in their last match.

I would expect Blatt to focus on Deng and not allow too many 3's as the home team can make them if left open. Blatt is a solid defensive coach. The travel could effect the Russians, who have never medaled at the Olympics (but did as the former Soviet Union).

Russia -11.5

Russia wins and covers by the score of 95-75.

USA vs. Turkey (women's BB)
5:15pm EDT (August 1)
Turkey +28.5

This should be a decent game with Turkey having a nice shot at covering. Turkey did come in second in the 2011 European Championships, losing to the Russians in the finals. They did lose to Russia by 15 and 16 points in their two games. They are 2-0 so far with low scoring games and just beat the Czech Republic 61-57. They are led by 6'4" Yilmaz who had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the one game. They also count on 6'5" Quanitra Hollingsworth, who played at VCU. She recently joined the team as a naturalized citizen.

Turkey did upset France back in 2011 and they are a top six women's team.

The USA just played a 90-38 game vs. Angola on Monday and their first game was 81-56 win over Croatia. The USA played Turkey in Istanbul just before the Olympics and won 80-61 in a physical game. Hopefully, we see an ugly game as they have set the total at 145.

My guess is we see a low scoring game in the range of 81-58 with the underdog staying within 28.5 points.

Turkey +28.5

Pick lost as Turkey played poorly in the 4th quarter (89-58).

Earlier in the week, the USA men were -55 to beat Tunisia. Later it did drop to about -53 and many talked about this being the largest line they had ever seen for a basketball game.

Back in October of 2011 at the women's Pa Am Games, Jamaica lost to Colombia by 57, then lost to Brazil by 82 and lost to Canada by 67. They played the USA women on Monday (Ocotber 24, 2011) afternoon and were underdogs of -65 to -70. The USA women had a record of 1-2 and had just won late on Sunday night. The loser of this game was going to finish in last place.

The USA won 87-41. They won by 36 but did not come close to covering.

USA vs. Lithuania
men's Olympic BB
under 186

Bet365 has this at 186.5 but most books have it at 186. They are expecting a 110-76 type of game. The USA is off a BLOWOUT of Nigeria on Thursday as they made 59-83 FG's and 29 of 46 3-pointers. Nigeria did outscore them 11-9 at the free throw line (maybe Coach K will make them run laps?). The USA has played three overs with scores reaching 169 with France, 173 with Tunisia and 229 with Nigeria.

Lithuania is 1-2 and did play a 102-79 (181 points) with Argentina as well as 125 and 156 point games. They are led by former decent college players Darius Songalia, Saranus Jasikevicious, Marty Pocious and Liza "Minelli" Kleiza. This team should be motivated to play some defense as well as take some time off the clock and keep this in the range of 105-75. Surely, the USA won't take as many 3's as they did vs. the Nigerians. Also, this is an early game for the USA after playing two late games.

I won't be shocked to see an over but I like our chances for under 186. There has to be some kind of a letdown after setting a record for points and facing a motivated team like Lithuania. GL!

USA vs. China
women's Olympics
11:45am Sunday (8/5/2012)

China +34.5

China is 3-1 and just lost to Turkey by 27 points. Turkey was highly motivated after losing to the USA in their previous game. China has won their three games by 9 vs. Czech, by 25 over Croatia and by 19 over Angola.

The USA is 4-0 so far. They usually start slow and win by a comfortable margin. They have not shot 3-pointers well except for Diana Taurasi going 4 for 8 in the last game. They have made just 3, 2, 3 and 7 so far in the four games going 15 for 63 (23.8%). Here are their wins:

won by 25 over Croatia
won by 52 over Angola
won by 31 over Turkey
won by 27 over Czech Republic

I think the USA will be happy to win this game by 25-30 points before they move on to the next round of games where they could face solid teams like France, Australia and Russia who are in the other group.

China is led by Nan Chen and she gets support from Miao, Gao and Ma. China is not a great team but should be motivated after a bad loss to Turkey where they were just 1/10 from 3-point range.

The USA has a roster full of stars. Candace Parker came off the bench in the last game as everyone is able to play minutes in the blowouts.

Also, this is the fifth game in nine days for both teams. The USA has started the previous four games at 5:15 pm eastern and this game will be played at 11:45am.

I think we see the USA win 85-57 but China covers the +34.5 spread.

Russia vs. Australia
12 noon Saturday
Women's Bronze Medal
Russia +9

These two played earlier and Australia won 70-66. Russia has played France their last two games and lost both games by 10+. The Russians outrebounded the Aussies 44-38 and should be able to stay close to an Australian team that is not real deep. They are led by Liz Clambake/Cabbage , Lauren Jackson, Belinda Snell, Jenna O'hea and Suzy Batkovic.

Russia is led by PG Becky Hammon, who plays for San Antonio of the WNBA. She plays for a Russian club team in the offseason. Osipova was scoreless in the last game with France but had 15 points/9 rb's in an earlier game.

I won't be shocked to see Australia wins big but I think Russia stays within 9 and covers. GL!

The USA women's under 18 team plays the Dominican Republic today (Aug. 15 at 1:30pm). USA is favored by 75.5 with a total set at 145.5. Bet365 is the only book that I have seen with a line.

USA vs. Canada
Fiba Americas under 18 (women)
8:15pm EDT
Canada +49.5

The USA is playing Canada in both the women's under 17 and under 18 tournaments. This game will be played in Puerto Rico at 8:15pm eastern. This is the semifinals with A1 facing B2. USA is 3-0 while Canada is 2-1. Canada's only loss was by 10 points to Brazil.

The games have been low scoring and ugly so far. All of the Canadian games have ended in the 101 points range. They are led by Crozon, Halverson, Roger, Campbell, Hudyn and Cooper. They have some solid rebounders and that will help them not allow too many second chance layups.

The USA has won their 3 games by 99-26, 68-28 and 87-36. Most of the opponents in the action I have watched dribble the ball around and then fire a 25 foot shot that usually misses the rim. The total is set at 123.5 so they are expecting a low scoring game. The USA are led by Morgan Tuck, Mabrey, Prince, Stewart and Graves.

I expect a low scoring game in the 81-41 range where Canada stays within 40 and covers the +49.5.

Pushed as Russia was down 14 in the third and managed to lose by 9.

Lebanon vs. China
Asian under 18 men's tournament
Sunday (August 19, 2012)
pick: Lebanon +47

Take Lebanon plus the points. China has put up some big numbers against Hong Kong and India. Now they play Lebanon, who is 2-0 and has several scorers like Arakji and Jimmy Salem. They had five players score in double figures in their last game. I think China wins by about 30 points so take the big number as the teams play their third game in three days and should show signs of fatigue.
