In Detroit, houses cheaper than cars

I don't mean to sound racist, but.... I don't think there is anyplace in the USA that is 70% + Black, and is a nice place to live. Being white, I know enough to leave ASAP when in Detroit,North Vegas,DC,etc.

alot of those areas is where you have high poverty rates. ill still maintain that you cant run away from crime. i live in a overhwelmingly white neighborhood and in the newspaper theres crimes daily. arson, theft, assault. hell my sound system was stolen and a neighbors house was vandalized.

and my city was rated some shit like 26th out of the top 100 cities to live in.

point of the comment is you have a higher chance of crime in those cities, but running to the burbs doesnt mean you're going to be away from crime either. false sense of security those people have. especially with the typical american these days.

I don't think the security is very false in a Lilly white hood. I live in a "Hood" that is easily 90% white... and a condo complex that is mainly senior citizens. I never lock my truck here ( almost leave the key in the ignition), my next door neighbor never locks his condo !

I hate the place, though ! My neighbor might want to borrow my truck when I go to Vegas Aug 22-27. I'll just leave the truck unlocked, and put the key over the visor, for him.

I wouldn't say I'm rich, I've had a lot of luck and took my own risks, which paid off.
My luck included being forced to sell up just before the property market went up, which is pretty big luck whichever way you look at it.

This afternoon, since the weather wasnt that great today to do much around the house, I hopped in the car and went to Detroit for some sightseeing.

Cruised Jefferson Ave. to Belle Isle and drove around the island. They are set up for the Grand Prix later this month. Can see just past downtown, some of the warehouses converted into flats like g2g mentioned. However, overall that area still looks dumpy. Basically some white yuppies living in gated and guarded areas nearby the ghetto.

Its pretty amazing...driving along Jefferson Avenue, the second I left Detroit and entered Grosse Point Park, it looked as if I entered another country.

Saw eeks buddies, the rich cappytalists living large along Lakeshore Drive in Grosse Point & St Clair Shores...all still looks well there.

TRS, Drove 9 mile and headed west through Warren, Hazel Park, and Oak Park.

Then rolled south down Woodward Ave and various other less traveled roads in the area in and around Highland Park...didnt see much different there than before, its a toilet just like the photos in this thread.

Did see some new flats build along some streets around John R between 8m and 7m. Looks like govt throwing money at trying to rebuild some of the most depressed areas with subsidized housing. A good gesture, but the places look to be made of very flimsy material, so final result will be wasted money once the locals tear those places apart.

Since they tore apart buildings that should have lasted 1000 years in less than 30 years, these places will be shacks in a short time. However, Id rather see money thrown away in Detroit than wasted in Iraq.

Grabbed some Mediterranean food near downtown, rolled back down Fort Street, to e-way and that ended todays tour of Motown.

Darryl, there is plenty of available land throughout the area, so if you are wanting to start some new colony within the US, the potential exists there.

I think it's more than that, and I think you know it too. You are smarter than average and so am I and I think we both have above an average work ethic, sense of responsibility and that sort of thing. A libby would argue that we are just lucky to be born with those things and to that I say so what? It works the same way in the animal kingdom.

A lion lucky enough to be born with the best genes gets to be king of the jungle and shag all the females while the unlucky sap who got born handicapped gets eaten by a hyena. Funny how the PETA folk don't shed a tear over these, only the animals eaten by humans.

Every species has maximized its survival chances by allowing the best genes to thrive and the worst ones to die out. Why should it be any different with humans? Have our genes gotten too good or what? :think2:

You MUST have a munney system because money is objective.
But you must also prevent the munney system from creating places like Detroit.

Thanks for the trip report Woof. LOL at the last part. I think the gov't needs to topple first. Land ownership under the current setup is an illusion you know. There's that little thing called property tax, not to mention zoning laws, eminent domain and other BS that can get thrown at you at a whim. Im looking on Realtor.com at houses in Detoit right now. Did a search for single family detached homes for under 20K. Search came up with over 400 houses. Unbelievable. Some of them dont look half that bad either. Im sure if I saw the "entire hood" I might think different.

Such a different world. Even though the housing market has crashed big time out here in the PHX area. You cant sniff a decent house for under 120K. But to keep things in perspective, that same 120K house was selling for 250K 2 years ago.

Imo, compared to much of Detroit, Port-au-Prince may be an upgrade and at least the weather is warmer in Haiti.

DP, some of the structures around Detroit would not pass any zoning laws today.

You could set up a state along lower Jefferson Avenue, south of downtown and north of river rouge, and other than the stray dogs and cats, probably no human would even notice for a few years.
