I'm not so sure.

Afghanistan worked out not too bad, but the locals are still in charge, and the opium trade continues relatively unmolested.
Theres plenty of radical dudes there too.

With Iraq, attempts are being made to impose a totally different system, instead of using the locals to police themselves.

Aid could be focussed on the more successful self-governing areas, plus it would make exporting oil much easier if they were in charge of it.

(Its the system that the Romans used, don't knock it.)

BAR: I agree.

In fact I submit that in the 21st century, No occupying force or army, regardless of size, can successfully occupy another sovereiqn country without taking continued, sustained casualties.

Yes, the United States would be the most difficult for any force to occupy (in other words, TOTALLY impossible), but the observation applies to any country.

That is why our objectives in Iraq are doomed. We cannot hope to successfully occupy and control another country without taking sustained and continual casualties.

I totally agree. The U.S. needs to get to a situation where they can hand the control of Iraq back to it's people and say "Good luck." I hope it's soon.

EEK, I specified the 21st century.

And even the Romans fell once they expanded too far and killed too many.

Oh really? Well, that is the difference between me and you.

You think those f*cks that cut that man's head off were just doing their duty? Compelled by greater forces, perhaps? I say bullshit.

You saying you'd be focusing on the "problem" instead of your child's murderer is f*cking weak, man. I hope you don't tell your kids that, if you have any. They'll never look at you the same again.

For your sake Boris, I hope you never have to back your words up.

Hello McFly?!!??....yes take care of the murderers, but also yes take care of the problem behind what happened so it does not keep happening. A person is like a blank slate more or less so we have to look at the external inputs and determine what was done to the people in that region to make them respond that way. Unless we think that they are hard wired to act that way because of their genetic make up and in that event we are going away from the "all men are created equal" stuff. They feel slighted by our past foreign policy. What you have to ask yourself is that if a foreign country, I know this is going to be really tough for many of us but let's pretend for a moment that we live in some other country besides the USA. Now let's all pretend that there exists this large and in charge country(not the US, pretend it is caled Kakastan)and they have decided that the person they put in control of our country they no longer like. Mind you, this is the same person they put in power when they felt threatened that our old government would go against some of the powers wishes. This man goes on to murder many innocents but it is all good because he is in Kakastans pocket, once he gets a little big in the gonads he decides to go against the Kakastans wishes. Do you support him or say " my allegiance lies with the invading army?

It's really sad to hear my fellow Americans suggest that Nukes are the answer. Clearly that's not a viable option here.
To support killing all Muslims is absolutely absurd. Nobody likes terrorists, but to think a group of radical extremists represent the Billions of Muslims is like blaming all bombings on veterans because of McVeigh.
This is the type of BS they use to justify attacks on Americans.
I don't know what the answer is, but surely ethnic cleansing is not it. There are no easy answers, but Nukes clearly aren't!

Gary,

You say that nobody likes terrorist. How about other terrorists?

Identifying these scum from the rest of the non terrorist has been very difficult. They use women and children as shields, they hide in the houses of others, they hind in worm holes, they dress in public as other arab civilians. They used box cutters to take down four jets as recently as 2.5 years ago. It's not like we line up our forces and they line up theirs and we battle it out, they would be obliterated. The cowardly approach is the only approach they can use and still live another day. Peace is not possible. No way. Their religion would not allow it. Fifty virgins waiting for you in heaven after you've killed yourself and Americans is a tough thing to pass on for these nuts.

You could always cater to the cowards. Do as the terrorist say and they won't be mean to you, as the liberals out their spewing their bad breath would like to have you believe.

It looks as though we will be there with a strong military presence at least until 2006. Bush said, "Bring it on" and so far it appears he has baited them well, and we will keep knocking them off in the Middle East until the end of time.

Resetting this earlier question, since I haven't yet seen a response

NJS: to me the only reason religion is brought up in these arguments is because the Muslims hate everyone that is not a Muslim

BAR: Who told you that?

Without exception, all of the Muslims I know disagree with that statement.
