Turning 50 later this year... 5'9" 170 lbs...

Been lifting for the past 15 years. No matter what I do I can't seem to develop real strength in my chest... genetics I guess. Can bench a set of 10 reps at 150-160 (at most) depending on how I feel that day... never been able to bench heavier than that. I've worked with trainers who told me they could help me gain chest strength but never any real gains there. My chest will get bigger with low reps and if I eat a LOT of protein but I never get any real strength gains chest-wise.

.

If you want to get you bench press a little higher, try the routine I mentioned earlier in the post and do this....move your grip out wider. Do it gradually, maybe a half-finger width wider each week, until you're about an inch outside the notches on the Olympic bar. When you bench, get into a crouch where your lower back is slightly arched and your chest stuck out, while maintaining both feet on the floor, and your ass in contact with the bench at all times through the movement. Touch the bar at the lower chest, around the nips, when you do your reps. You want to turn it into almost a decline press. If your touching too high on the chest you won't be able to handle as much and you'll put too much stress on your shoulders. GL

2 tips that help me bench a little more, although I never bench for max, I do one of 3 things.

A. Dumbbells, 4 sets
B. Bench- 4 sets of 8
C. Bench- 4 sets of 12/10/8/6

As for the tips, im gonna try to explain this the best I can, it would be best if I could just find where I read it, but...

A. After you reach up and grab the bar, try to get both of your shoulder blades on the bench. Dont arch your back or anything, just try to bring them onto the bench. Hard to explain but effective.

B. Lock your legs down onto the floor like they are an anchor, you want a nice solid, firm base.

C. Scream like an F'n idiot. Not really, I hate this guy and if its you, please note that you look/sound like a tool and people are making fun of you

My best max was 280. I even did 2 reps with 275, but I couldn't get over 280 for a max. It was weird. And I always got injured when I got to this level. I don't think my joints were meant for benching 300.
