We used the following rules:

Contest length: One year
Sports included: All
Buy-in: $XXXX
Prize pool: 1[SUP]st[/SUP]: 70%, 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]: 20% and 3[SUP]rd[/SUP]: 10%
Starting bankroll: $10,000 (fictional figure for contest purposes)
Maximum play: 3% of existing bankroll or $300, whichever is greater
Minimum action: 500 plays over 4 sports
Available Lines: 5Dimes, Heritage and Bookmaker
Exclusions: Live-bets, partial game bets, futures and exotics

I will caveat we had 22 people in and we were all good friends, so the rules and such were a bit loose and there was minimal concern for someone cheating. I would assume things would need to be tightened up in this setting. There was a lot of bickering over the prize pool, but most wanted to heavily slant towards the winner.


It was a really exciting contest for the first three-four months. By that point, most of the group was out and uninterested. IMO, the contest was too long. We suggested if we did this again we may look at eight months (Nov-May – I suggested Sep-Apr). I may be biased based by the fact I’m not much of a baseball bettor and our contest was virtually over at the four-five month mark with two guys running away with it. Third place came down to the wire, but there was a minimal return associated with it.

I just thought that giving it a little more time would allow other posters to find out about it, since many might be taking a small break after the Super Bowl.

The biggest hurdle is figuring out how to base what lines are used daily...

The problem with this is when you compare MLB and NFL. Are you saying we do 25 MLB plays AND 25 NFL plays? Not including playoffs we are saying 25 plays out of 512 NFL games and 25 plays out of 4,860 MLB games. Or are you saying we do 75 MLB plays and 25 NFL plays. Here the advantage clearly lies with the MLB capper as he can make 3x the units as the #1 sport in the world.

If you want to maximize the number of entries I think you need to do two things:

1) Use the $500.00 entry fee. Guys won't say it, but $1000.00 will be too steep for a lot of guys and therefore entry limiting.

2) Make a three sport minimum requirement.

The intent of the Contest is to ascertain multi-sport handicapping efficiency.

The major sports would be:

Summer
MLB

Fall
NFL
NCAAFB

Later Fall / Winter
NBA
NCAABB
NHL

That's six sports in three basic seasons.

I think it's fair to assume that most posters here would not be interested in risking $500.00 and playing if the rules required them to handicap all the sports. Few handicappers actually do that. Fewer would be willing to risk $500.00 if there were an all sport requirement.

So I think a three sport (minimum) requirement would satisfy the multi-sport proficiency intent, and generate maximum interest.

I also agree with powerz that all bets should be single unit bets (Bases - 1 to make whatever + or -). And I think there should be like 700 units max, and 350 min, available to each player (basically an average of 1 to 2 plays per day for the duration of the Contest). Also a 50 unit minimum per sport (minimum of 3 sports).

Overall Prizes
1st 55% of Remaining Pot
2nd 30% of Remaining Pot
3rd 15% of Remaining Pot
--based off at least 30 entries, add 1 Payout Spot per 10 entries...

I would disagree on including NHL only because of the moneyline aspect. I think MLB ML's are fine because all of us will have 75 picks on that... adding NHL would create too much difference in picks IMHO

Flat Betting Only, Spreads Only (except MLB which is ML's Only). Everything is 1.1 to Win 1... MLB ML Dogs would be (ex +120) 1 to Win 1.2, favs (ex -120) will be 1.2 to Win 1
