By sheer number of great songwritrers this country has produced it's not even close:

Dylan (greatest lyricist of all time)
Springsteen
Neil Young
Stevie Wonder
Willie Nelson
Johnny Cash
Tom Waits
Lou Reed
Brian Wilson
Billy Joel
Henley/Frey
Jackson Browne
Jimmy Webb
Paul Simon
Woody Guthrie
John Denver (another great lyricist)
Phil Spector
Smokey Robinson
Marvin Gaye
Chuck Berry
Carol King
Holland-Dozier-Holland
Michael Jackson

And that's just off the top of my head

Diane Warren has written some great songs...mostly pop music, but it's amazing the hits she's put out.

Here's a top 100 list of songwriting artists:

Sorry but he will always be known as a Canadian first. Always! Just as Jim Carrey will. You can have Justin Beiber though.

Neil Young

Songwriter

Neil Percival Young, OC OM is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. He began performing in a group covering Shadows instrumentals in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he ... Wikipedia

A lot more people listen to Chris Martins songs than about a quarter of the guys on your list. I don't need music critics telling me who is a great song writer.

I remembered Yellow for about 5 minutes. All of the songwriters on my list have endured the test of time. But to each his own I guess...

anywhere credible that you look up ... Neil Young, it will always start off similar to "Neil Percival Young, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician". That is the point. This will never change. Never. So you cannot list him under American anything such as the greatest American singer etc. Sorry.

The time that he has spent in the U.S. and his fight for many American causes such as Farm Aid probably makes him more American than you or I...Sorry

So many L7 s in this thread. It's a subjective discussion. I however can be objective. I have not read every post but I have read about three pages and I get the impression that most pick the ones who were popular or relevant during the time period of their youth. Beach Boys cannot be denied. Nirvana cannot be denied: their influences on American music. There are more to be sure. Has anyone mentioned Presley? Never liked him but his influence is still relevant today.

Going to have to disagree..... I think Canada takes all the blame for him. We have enough commie degenerates of our own down here...... no need to take credit for him.
